Santana's 2-run double, Bibbe's 7 scoreless innings help Guardians beat Tigers 7-0 in ALDS rematch
DETROIT (AP) — Carlos Santana had a two-run double in the fourth inning, Angel Martínez hit a solo homer in the fifth and Tanner Bibee threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Cleveland Guardians in a 7-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night.
It was the first meeting between the teams since the Guardians won their AL Division Series last October.
The AL-leading Tigers had won seven of nine games and Cleveland had lost seven of its previous 10.
Bibee (4-4) allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Jack Flaherty (2-6) gave up three runs on three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Flaherty had two strikeouts in the first inning, including the 1,000th of his career. After Kyle Manzardo walked in the fourth, Santana's double to center put the Guardians up 2-0.
Tim Herrin replaced Bibee in the eighth and exited with the bases loaded and no outs. Trey Sweeney led off the inning with a walk, Javier Baez followed with an infield single and Justyn-Henry Malloy reached on a hit to center that outfielder Lane Thomas appeared to lose sight of in the lights.
Cade Smith struck out the next three batters to strand all three runners.
Cleveland earned a larger cushion in a four-run ninth that got a boost when third baseman Zach McKinstry was charged with a fielding error, allowing Santana to score after he led off with a walk.

Cubs legend Sammy Sosa returns to Wrigley Field after 20-plus year hiatus
CHICAGO (AP) — Legendary Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa returned to Wrigley Field for the first time in more than 20 years on Friday before Chicago's afternoon game with the Seattle Mariners. Sosa, who is set to be inducted into the Cubs' team Hall of Fame this year, arrived at the iconic North Side ballpark in a black SUV. He was greeted by owner Tom Ricketts, who embraced him in a hug as he exited the vehicle. Sosa became the face of the Cubs franchise where he played 13 seasons after coming in a trade from the crosstown White Sox in March 1992. A seven-time All-Star, Sosa hit 545 homers in 1,811 games with the Cubs and hit a franchise-record 66 in 1998 when he was named the NL's MVP. Sosa, now 56, played his final game with the Cubs at Wrigley on Oct. 2, 2004, when he homered and had two hits in an 8-6 loss to Atlanta. During his years with the Cubs, Sosa appeared to bulk up drastically and was a headliner in a generation of baseball's biggest names linked to performance-enhancing drugs. The Cubs traded him to Baltimore with cash in February 2005 for three players. Sosa appeared to acknowledge using performance-enhancing drugs in December when he released a statement saying he was sorry for mistakes, without specifying them. 'There were times I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games,' he said in the statement. 'I never broke any laws. On Friday morning, Sosa posed for photos with rising Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong outside the team's clubhouse and a video showed Sosa embracing manager Craig Counsell in his office before the game. In Thursday's 8-7 loss to Milwaukee, Crow-Armstrong went deep to set a new team record for reaching 20 homers and 20-plus stolen stolen bases the fastest, doing it in 73 games. Wolves sign attacking midfielder Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo on 5-year contract
WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Wolverhampton has signed attacking midfielder Fer Lopez from Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo on a five-year contract, the Premier League club said on Friday. The 21-year-old Spaniard is the first summer signing for Wolves and follows forward Jorgen Strand Larsen, who also joined the English team from Celta last year. The transfer fee is reportedly worth 19.5 million pounds ($26 million). Lopez made 20 appearances for Celta after making his senior debut in October, scoring four goals and helping the club to finish seventh in La Liga. It is a return to England for the product of the Celta academy, who spent four months at a school in Stowmarket in Suffolk at age 15. 'It's an amazing opportunity for my career to play in the Premier League, and I'm very happy,' Lopez said. Create Account The Dutch public prosecution service confirmed to the AP that Promes was en route to the Netherlands, in Dutch custody. Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 international matches for the Netherlands before legal issues derailed his international career, was convicted last year of complicity in cocaine smuggling and sentenced in his absence to six years in prison. Amsterdam District Court ruled that Promes was involved in the import and export of hundreds of kilograms (pounds) of cocaine in 2020. His lawyers told judges he denied the allegations. In 2023, Promes was found guilty of stabbing his cousin in the leg and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Both of Promes' convictions are currently under appeal. Promes, a 33-year-old former player for Ajax and Sevilla, had been playing for Spartak Moscow and living in Russia from 2021 until last year, when he was reportedly arrested in Dubai around the time that Spartak was there for friendly games.
