South Africa's call to the UN over dangers of cybercrime and organised crime
During the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice session, Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald stressed the significance of global cooperation in the fight against cybercrime.

Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald said Monday that international collaboration is essential for combating modern threats such as cybercrime, which erode the rule of law and negatively affect the quality of life for all citizens, particularly vulnerable populations.
He also announced that South Africa is in the process of creating a National Transnational Organised Crime Strategy to address these issues.
This formed part of South Africa's national statement at the 34th session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) in Vienna, Austria.
Groenewald said the CCPCJ is convening at a significant moment, as the international community marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, also known as the Nelson Mandela Rules and the 15th anniversary of the Bangkok Rules.
He said these reflect the global consensus that the dignity and human rights of all persons, including those deprived of liberty, must be respected.

'As we confront new, evolving, and increasingly complex forms of crime, ranging from cybercrime to crimes that affect the environment, it is imperative that our justice systems remain firmly anchored in the rule of law and guided by the fundamental principles of human rights,' Groenewald said.
'In this context, South Africa welcomes the timely deliberations of this session, recognising that these emerging forms of crime pose a growing threat to global peace, security, and sustainable development. We welcome the theme's alignment with Actions 7 and 24 of the Pact for the Future and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.'
The Minister said that although South Africa supports the ongoing reform of the United Nations to enhance system-wide coherence and realignment of priorities and financial resources, it is concerned about the ongoing liquidity crisis facing the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and its adverse impact on programme delivery and technical assistance, particularly to developing countries.
However, the country affirms its support for the role the UNODC plays in addressing transnational organised crime.
'South Africa calls for strengthened international cooperation to effectively address evolving threats, which undermine the rule of law and impact the quality of life of our citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, such as women, children and youth,' Groenewald said.
'In this regard, I wish to inform that South Africa is developing a National Transnational Organised Crime Strategy to prevent and combat transnational organised crime.'
'To enhance the fight against crime and ensure uniformity, Member States are encouraged to harmonise their legal frameworks by ratifying and implementing international legal treaties, such as the recently adopted UN Convention against Cybercrime, which serves as a pivotal international framework to combat cybercrime, strengthen international cooperation and facilitate technical assistance and capacity-building support, particularly for developing countries,' Groenewald continued.
Groenewald urged Member States to sign and ratify the instrument for early entry into force and also adopt innovative crime prevention approaches to build a safer and more resilient world.
Meanwhile, on behalf of the African Group, ambassador, permanent representative of Burkina Faso and chair of the Africa Group to the Permanent Missions to the United Nations in Vienna, Maimounata Ouattara, urged all United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) State Parties to impose a system-wide zero tolerance policy against corrupt practices and highlights the necessity to take urgent measures to prevent, prosecute and deter all forms of corruption, to strengthen international cooperation to effectively prevent and counter money laundering and illicit financial flows and enhance measures for the identification, tracing, freezing, seizure, return of assets and recovery of all proceeds of crime or corruption, to deny them safe havens through their eventual confiscation.

US involvement in Iran's nuclear conflict: Unconfirmed claims and escalating tensions

Kruger said this should be stopped, adding that South Africa and other countries must take a stance. 'This will stop the conflict because Israel will not be able to resist this pressure. They must do it through the United Nations,' he said. International relations expert, Dr Noluthando Phungula, said the conflict is bound to harm the entire world, including South Africa. "Oil prices quickly surged up 7% by Friday afternoon and the attacks prompted an instantaneous reaction on the global markets. This will have a dire impact on the dependent developing world due to oil price increases, she said, adding that this also suggests that 'we' may be facing another period of sharply higher energy prices. 'Consequently, almost everything, petrol, gas, and food, will cost more.' She said this reality was seen during the Russia-Ukraine conflict a few years ago, affecting people's lives around the globe. Phungula also warned that other countries in the region could be drawn in, should the attacks continue. Meanwhile, the MK Party condemned the attack, saying it constitutes a direct violation of international law, sovereignty, and the foundational principles of peace, self-determination and non-intervention. The party said this is a declaration of war against the Iranian people, the majority of whom are innocent civilians. 'American officials, without shame or restraint, confirmed these strikes as deliberate and coordinated. President Donald Trump described the attacks as successful, a chilling reminder of how easily Western leaders disguise destruction as diplomacy. The US feigned diplomacy and struck in the dark. "The MK Party calls on the international community, especially the African Union, BRICS nations and the Non-Aligned Movement, to reject this new cycle of militarism and unilateral attacks on sovereign nations. As Iran prepares to defend itself, there has to be a reopening of diplomatic channels and full accountability for the lives lost and infrastructure destroyed,' the party said in a statement. President Cyril Ramaphosa also called on the three countries to give the UN an opportunity and space to lead on the peaceful resolution of the matters of dispute, including inspection and verification of Iran's status of uranium enrichment, as well as its broader nuclear capacity.

Tragic Chatsworth crash claims life of man in fiery vehicle blaze
A man died in a crash on the M1 Higginson Highway on Saturday. Image: ALS Paramedics / Facebook A man believed to be in his forties tragically lost his life in a horrific crash on the M1 Higginson Highway Eastbound, just before the Havenside robots in Chatsworth, on Saturday evening. ALS Paramedics reported that the incident occurred just before 6pm. Multiple ambulances and advanced life support teams responded to the scene. 'Initial reports were that a vehicle had somehow lost control and collided with a tree before the vehicle burst into flames,' ALS Paramedics Garrith Jamieson said. On arrival, paramedics found that the vehicle was already on fire, and the eThekwini Fire Department was actively working to extinguish the blaze. 'The driver, believed to be the only occupant in the vehicle, unfortunately, was unable to get out of the vehicle in time and passed away on the scene,' the paramedics said. Divisional Commander Nkulumo Dube of eThekwini Municipality Fire & Emergency Services confirmed that a fire engine was dispatched just before 6pm on Saturday to attend to the crash, where firefighters found a bakkie engulfed in flames after colliding with trees. However, Shivambu dismissed the party's reasons, claiming he was demoted because he had questioned the embezzlement of R7 million from the party's funds. 'I was redeployed for daring to speak out against corruption within the party. Despite this, I remain committed to serving the people and will not leave the MK party.' 'I am exploring the possibility of forming a new political entity that reflects our shared values," Shivambu stated during the briefing. He further indicated that he would proceed with the potential formation of a new political platform, emphasising that his actions are motivated by a desire to promote transparency and accountability in South African politics.
