Rugby-Farrell rejoins Saracens on two-year deal

LONDON (Reuters) -Former England captain Owen Farrell will return to Saracens after spending one season with French club Racing 92, the English Premiership club said on Monday.
The 33-year-old flyhalf, who spent 16 years at Saracens, has signed a two-year contract with the London club starting from next season.
Farrell, who helped Saracens win six Premiership titles and three European Champions Cups, stood down from England duty after the 2023 World Cup saying he needed to do so for his mental health.
"Saracens is my home and the opportunity to come back is one that excites me enormously," Farrell said in club statement.
"Having watched from afar this season, it is clear to see that the club has incredible potential, and I can't wait to get back in the mix for the 2025-26 season."
Farrell has made 256 appearances for Saracens, earned 112 England caps and played six tests for the British and Irish Lions.
The former Saracens captain joined Racing last year on a two-year deal but form and injuries restricted him to 17 appearances for them.
He was omitted from the Lions squad, coached by his father Andy Farrell, for this year's tour of Australia.
"Owen has Saracens in his DNA; his competitive spirit is woven into the fabric of this club, and we are delighted he has chosen to come home," Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall said.

Farrell had said he expected the Lions to have a fully fit squad in the next week with Jamison Gibson-Park, Hugo Keenan and Huw Jones working their way back to fitness, and at least appeared to come away unscathed on Friday. "Health wise we seem to have come away okay," he said. Centre Bundee Aki, one of the Lions' try scorers who said he was disappointed in his own performance and not connecting better with new centre partner Sione Tuipulotu, said Farrell had been just as forthright in the changing room. "He gives it to us straight, there's no mucking around and we're old enough to take it on the chin. MIAMI: Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi lost his cool after a Club World Cup fan wearing a Paris St Germain shirt in Seattle taunted him about last month's Champions League final, with the Italian threatening to beat him up if the teasing continued. The fan brought up a humiliating moment from Inter's 5-0 defeat by the French champions in Munich, in which Acerbi was left sprawling after some dazzling footwork by Bradley Barcola. On a video that went viral on social media, the visibly annoyed Italian international sought the help of a translator during a meet-and-greet with fans. The translator told the fan in English on Thursday: "You must be serious with him." Seconds later, Acerbi stepped in to say in Italian: "I'm serious. Don't make fun of me — I don't like it. ... I'm crazy, I'll beat the crap out of you." Acerbi then quickly moved on, posing for photos with other fans. Inter were not immediately available for comment.

Benfica knock out Auckland in delayed Club World Cup romp
ORLANDO: Benfica sailed to a 6-0 win to eliminate Auckland City from the Club World Cup on Friday in Orlando in a match which suffered a long weather delay, with Angel Di Maria netting two penalties. With the Portuguese side leading by a goal at half-time the match was suspended because of a storm, eventually resuming two hours later. "This is the longest game of my career, a special thanks to our fans, who have been here for five hours supporting the team," said Benfica coach Bruno Lage. "We played as well as we could. The (hot) temperature made it very difficult." Featured Videos Auckland of New Zealand, the only Oceania Football Confederation representatives at the tournament, were thrashed 10-0 by Bayern Munich in their Group C opener and this defeat sealed their fate. Despite their eventual collapse, Auckland battled hard in the first half and almost made it to the break unscathed. Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow made several good saves to keep Benfica at bay and the Portuguese side grew frustrated. Benfica took the lead deep into first half stoppage time when Gianluca Prestianni was clumsily felled in the area by Haris Zeb.
