Chagee to widen retail footprint in Malaysia via joint venture with Magma Group
PETALING JAYA: Magma Group Bhd's wholly owned subsidiary, Magma Chain Management Sdn Bhd, has signed a strategic joint venture and a subscription agreement with Chagee (M) Sdn Bhd, a premium tea brand, to accelerate the development of Chagee's retail footprint across Malaysia through a phased retail rollout.
The joint venture marks a key milestone in Magma's diversification strategy in the premium food and beverage retail segment.
Chagee will hold a 60% stake and Magma the remaining 40% in the new joint venture company, Chagee Magma Sdn Bhd.
Chagee Magma aims to open up to 300 directly managed Chagee outlets across Malaysia over the next three years through a phased rollout, subject to prevailing market conditions.
Magma group managing director and group CEO Datuk Seri Thomas Liang Chee Fong said the joint venture reflects the company's strategic vision to diversify into high-growth lifestyle and consumer segments.
'The partnership leverages Chagee's proven operational excellence and strong consumer appeal, recently reinforced by its successful listing on Nasdaq, alongside Magma's deep expertise in local market development and execution.
'Together, we see substantial opportunities to capture significant value within Malaysia's expanding premium tea market,' he said in a statement.
The collaboration combines Chagee's established brand strength, global credibility and premium product offerings with Magma's local market insights and development expertise to jointly facilitate the rollout of new outlets.
Leveraging Magma's hospitality background and commercial presence in Malaysia, the partnership is well-positioned to accelerate Chagee's nationwide expansion and respond to growing demand for premium, lifestyle-oriented beverage experiences.
Further, the joint venture aligns with Magma Group's broader vision to build a diversified portfolio that meets the evolving lifestyle preferences of Malaysia's dynamic consumer base, driving sustainable long-term shareholder value.
Chagee is a leading premium tea drinks brand, serving healthy and delicious freshly made tea beverages. It entered the Malaysian market in 2019 under the name BaWangChaJi, before unifying its global branding under the Chagee name in September 2021.
Today, Malaysia is Chagee's largest market outside of China, and its Malaysian operations are halal-certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia.

CAAM To Be Made Financially Independent Statutory Body Effective Aug 1
GENERAL PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (Bernama) -- The government has agreed to make the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) a Remunerated Separated and Exempted Statutory Body (BBDSB) effective Aug 1, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. In a press conference here today, he said the matter was agreed by the Cabinet on June 11, which approved the proposal to make CAAM a BBDSB. 'This means that this statutory body will no longer require financial injections from the government through annual allocations. At the same time, it is also not subject to the government's remuneration system. 'It is exempted from remuneration and separated from the government. So, it will be an independent body in terms of finances and also its remuneration,' he said. Loke said this decision is in line with the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen the national aviation institution. 'It also ensures that Malaysia remains a country with a technical and economic aviation regulatory system that is credible, competent and meets international standards,' he said. He said CAAM has the ability to operate as a BBDSB because it records a certain amount of profit through certain charges to, among others, international airlines and parties that use Malaysian airspace. 'So right now, our estimated revenue for this year is about RM400 million. We have collected approximately RM150 million in the first five months of this year, so the revenue for the first five months of this year has exceeded the entire year of last year. "That has given us the confidence that it will be financially independent and sustainable. And that is also one of the important conditions for the Cabinet and for JPA (the Public Service Department) to grant CAAM as BBDSB," he said.

Johan: Government to closely monitor potential impact from ongoing geopolitical tension
KUALA LUMPUR — The government is closely monitoring the ongoing geopolitical situation and its potential impact on the Malaysian economy, particularly in the wake of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) expansion. Treasury Secretary-General Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican said the high level of uncertainty due to geopolitical developments in the Middle East draws a premature conclusion on how it might influence inflation and the cost of living domestically. 'I do recall back when we had the Ukraine war, there was just so much uncertainty. We don't know to what extent the situation may escalate and how that might impact the economy. 'Initially, we had thought that the Russia-Ukraine war would not affect us much because we do not have much trade with either country. We were quite wrong. It turned out that Ukraine was the major supplier of feed. Therefore, we suddenly saw an increase in agricultural inputs, which impacted prices,' he said at the Concorde Club session today. Johan said given the ongoing conflict is in the Middle East, there will be some impact on oil prices, one of the key factors in Malaysia's inflation outlook. He said oil prices have been fluctuating significantly, having started the year in the mid-US$70 range, dipped to the low US$60 last month and recently climbed again amid regional instability. 'But at least, year-to-date, inflation has remained below 2.0 per cent thus far. We saw a Maybank estimate of an impact of 0.25 per cent on the consumer price index (CPI) as a result of SST. 'Our internal estimates are in that order of magnitude as well. But if the situation escalates, we certainly need to see how that impacts in terms of economic growth,' he said. For now, Johan said the ministry will continue to monitor developments and adjust its economic strategies as needed to maintain price stability and protect Malaysians from sudden cost-of-living pressures. The expanded SST to improve national fiscal stability without overburdening the public is set to take effect from July 1, 2025. The government expects additional SST to increase by RM5 billion in 2025 and by RM10 billion in 2026 following the review and expansion of the tax scope. On RON95, Johan said the government remains committed to rationalising fuel subsidies through a targeted approach, with the implementation of RON95 petrol subsidy reforms anticipated in the second half of 2025. 'The exact timing and structure are still subject to Cabinet decision,' he said. He said the move mirrors earlier reforms undertaken for electricity tariffs and diesel subsidies, which introduced tiered pricing mechanisms to protect lower and middle-income groups while curbing leakages. — BERNAMA
