Gerik bus crash: Terengganu seeking Air Force's help to airlift injured UPSI student home

SETIU: The Terengganu government is negotiating with the Air Force to arrange a mercy flight for a Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student injured in the bus crash on the East-West Highway to return home.
State welfare, women's development, family and national unity committee chairman Maliaman Kassim said the student, Nur Erika Alisya Mohd Zaidi, 21, who is still receiving treatment at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh, can only be transported back to Terengganu by air.
"The hospital said she cannot travel by land due to her injuries. So we are negotiating with the Air Force for a mercy flight to bring Nur Erika home via," he said on Friday (June 20) after visiting another injured UPSI student, Aimi Nusaha Che Azmi, 21, in Kampung Gong Batu, Bandar Permaisuri, here.
Maliaman said in addition to Nur Erika, there is another UPSI student still receiving treatment at the Ipoh hospital and another at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. The rest have returned to their respective hometowns.
He also said the state government had provided aid to 48 victims and family members involved in the tragedy, namely RM3,000 to the families of the deceased and RM1,000 to those injured, including the bus driver, co-driver and four individuals in a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).
He added that the state government would continue to assist the victims, including for medical costs, adding that Nur Erika had incurred the highest cost of RM18,588.
In the early June 9 incident, 15 UPSI students died when a bus travelling from Jertih to the UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned in an accident with an MPV on the highway.
Another 33 were injured, including the bus driver and co-driver, as well as the driver and three passengers of the MPV. – Bernama

BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is in the final stages of completing investigation papers to prosecute the operator of the bus company involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on June 9. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said it was preparing two investigation papers, one involving the bus operating company and the other involving the company that leased the bus. "At the moment, the investigation is in its final phase, and the papers are expected to be handed over to the prosecution soon, likely within a month," he told reporters after the MyLesen B2 Driving Licence handover ceremony at the PICCA Convention Centre here today. He was responding to a question on whether the RTD would prosecute the owner of the bus company involved in the accident. When asked whether the investigation was affected by allegations that the operator had suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly denied the matter. He said action against the operator was being taken in accordance with existing regulations, and there was no issue related to health conditions. "However, if he (the owner) is hospitalised or otherwise indisposed, we will wait before taking further action. "But for now, we are proceeding with the investigation papers," he added. Transport Minister Anthony Loke was reported as saying that the RTD would take legal action against the bus company if it was found to have violated regulations or failed to ensure operational safety. BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. 'There are two investigation papers that we are preparing (to take action) against the company operator and also the company that leased the bus. 'The investigation papers are still at the JPJ level and we expect to hand them over to the prosecution soon,' he said at a press conference after officiating the Penang-level MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Handover Ceremony here today. Previously, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook had said that the JPJ would open an investigation paper against the bus company involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students due to the company's failure to operate according to the stipulated rules and regulations. Regarding the allegation that the JPJ could not record the bus company's operator's statement because he suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly said his side was not informed about the matter. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning.
