Borderlands 4
I have yet to see anything in Borderlands 4 previews that suggests to me that it's not going to be great, and in the wake of pre-orders (at a $70 price) launching this week, now we have a large batch of hands-on previews that have dropped from various outlets and creators.
Well, the good news is that the Borderlands 4 previews are almost all universally positive, and have a general sense of the series being 'back.' The bad news is…well, I'm not really seeing bad news.
Here is a smattering of highlights from the previews, which come from both outlets and YouTubers deep into the scene:
IGN: 'After several hours dipping our toes into what is sure to be a massive looter shooter, we're much more optimistic about its odds of recapturing our affections after years apart.'
Game Informer: 'With Gearbox, it truly feels like Borderlands 4 is taking those steps to change the direction of a franchise that had been drifting away from me for more than a decade, while still remaining staunchly true to its overarching identity.'
Screenrant: 'It's hard to distill everything I loved about my time playing Borderlands 4 down to a digestible length. I could go on for far too long about how great the new throwing knives are or how this is easily some of the best-written Borderlands content, thanks to the game's humor staying grounded in its own world as opposed to relying too hard on dated internet culture.'

This echoes the sense the previews gave, that this had taken the immense amount of feedback and criticism from the (still very successful) Borderlands 3. Two areas that have been significantly addressed are the dramatic increase in mobility, ranging from grappling hooks to gliding, to make the combat feel more fast-paced and modern. It's also refreshing to hear that the writing is less meme-y than it used to be, harkening back to the BL1 days of the series where sure, there was comedy, but it didn't go overboard to the point of being exceptionally lame (something BL3 had in spades).
spades).
Borderlands 4 recently moved its release date up to September 13, 2025. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said that it was just confidence in the product, not trying to avoid Bungie's Marathon, which it previously shared a release date with (as of yesterday, Marathon is delayed indefinitely anyway) or avoiding the not-yet-announced GTA 6 (which was eventually delayed to May 2026). So, he was right.
Borderlands 4 was already one of my most-anticipated games of the year, possibly the most-anticipated, given the thousand hours I've put into the past games. Now? I'm doubling down on that. I cannot wait.

Borderlands 4 stirs controversy amid price talk

Borderlands 4 may be 2025's most anticipated looter shooter title, so hopefully its studio, Gearbox, will try its best to remain tight-lipped for the next few months. A few weeks ago, when asked online about Borderlands 4 possibly being a US$80 title, chief executive officer Randy Pitchford said that: (a) it's 2K Games' call, not his, and (b) true fans will find a way to buy it if it came to that. That's a rather tone-deaf response, especially amid ongoing economic instability and upheaval in the games industry. What is perplexing is that Randy Pitchford gave a much better answer about pricing a month ago. We're not sure who handled Pitchford's Twitter account, or if the man himself truly forgot what he said a month earlier, but it is a bad look for him and Gearbox. This isn't the first controversy he has gone through. Online, you'll find longstanding allegations, including a story about him allegedly leaving a USB containing sexually explicit material at a Medieval Times restaurant, stories of him and his company siphoning money off Sega meant for an Aliens game (which went to Borderlands 2), and lying about the state of the game pre-launch, and the mishandling of Duke Nukem Forever. And his involvement in 2024's worst movie, the Borderlands live-action film adaptation. Even with the possible success of Borderlands 4, the internet truly never forgets. Which is why, more than ever, if Gearbox needs to truly succeed with its upcoming looter shooter at launch and beyond, publisher 2K Games must manage Pitchford's public presence more carefully. Short Beats The Nintendo Switch 2 will be out in Malaysia on July 3, 2025. The console will cost RM2,488. China's NetEase Games has announced a new triple-A, single-player action title called Blood Message. The game will be out for PC and consoles, though no release date or year has been announced. Despite controversy from its CEO, Gearbox Software's upcoming looter shooter title Borderlands 4 will not cost over US$80. FromSoftware has launched post-launch downloadable content for its roguelite action title Elden Ring: Nightreign. Longtime VR rhythm game Beat Saber will no longer receive new content and support on PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2. Other versions of the title will still get support, though. FBC Firebreak is the major release of the week. It's the player-versus-player spin-off to 2019's action-adventure title Control. Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is a new isometric-perspective action roguelite title where you play a dethroned queen fighting her way out of a gothic game board-themed slew of dungeons and adversaries. The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper's larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays. Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you'll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives. It took me 2:07 to complete today's NYT Mini. This was a pretty interesting one! I'm fairly happy with that time too, given how stuck I was at some points. I was happy to get JOYFUL right away (I got FINALE and CASTLE at the first attempt too). But I thought GAB was 'yap' and ANIMAL was 'player' at first. Those two incorrect guesses tripped me up a bit when I got to the Down side. A few answers here were critical to me understanding the rest of the grid, as the nexus of ORIGINALS, YOGA MAT, AROUSE and BIG RED were causing me some trouble. Finally figuring out ANIMAL helped me fill in the blanks going Down, while USE did the same for BIG RED (which I've never had, so I was glad to pull that from my memory bank) and AROUSE.
