Plan to fix Hull bridges and house replica Banksy on Scott Street

A report that highlights the full extent of problems, damage and decay to 15 bridges in Hull also reveals a plan to fix them.On Monday, Hull City Council's cabinet will consider the long-term programme of works which, if approved, would run until May 2030.The proposals include strengthening work on the Hessle Road flyover, Sutton Road bridge and flyover and North Bridge.It also includes a project to build a display frame to house a replica of the Banksy "Draw the raised bridge" artwork at the site of the former Scott Street bridge.
In April, the council said it had earmarked more than £28m to fix bridges around the city.Council leader Mike Ross wrote to the government asking for Hull to be allocated part of a £1bn pot for the "renewal of broken bridges, ruined roads and tired tunnels".
The improvement works being considered by the council cabinet include:Decommissioning of the Boothferry Road footbridge, close to the Costello Stadium, after "numerous defects" were found including an "ongoing risk" to the structure holding the bridge together.Bearing replacement work on the Ennerdale Bridge, Stoneferry Bridge and Millennium Footbridge.The redesign and replacement of the mechanism on the Scale Lane swing bridge, which was closed for investigation work in February.A refurbishment of Sculcoates Bridge, which underwent engineering work two years ago. It was closed to vehicle traffic in 2020 over collapse concerns.Replacement timber fenders for the Wilmington Bridge at Wincolmlee after the discovery of "extensive decay".Victoria Pier and the River Hull walkway also form part of the plan. They will be made safe while a feasibility study to look at their potential replacement is carried out.The footbridge, which links Priory Drive and Priory Road to Hotham Road and Bricknell Avenue over the Hull to Scarborough railway line, is also said to be in "poor condition" with "movement to the foundations".Mark Ieronimo, the portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at the council, said he acknowledged there was a "significant amount of work required".He added: "I am confident that this comprehensive maintenance programme provides a strategic plan to address these needs effectively."This initiative marks a crucial step towards enhancing the longevity and functionality of our community's infrastructure."

Pool's future in doubt due to 'historic issues'

Badenoch: BBC should not show ‘extremist' Kneecap at Glastonbury

Kemi Badenoch said the BBC should not broadcast Kneecap 'propaganda' at Glastonbury Festival next week. The Tory leader said on X that the BBC 'should not be rewarding extremism' by showing the Irish republican rap group's set. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, a Kneecap member, appeared in court accused of displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November last year. Reacting to a story in The Times that claimed the BBC had not banned the group from its Glastonbury coverage, Mrs Badenoch tweeted: 'The BBC should not be showing Kneecap propaganda. 'One Kneecap band member is currently on bail, charged under the Terrorism Act. 'As a publicly funded platform, the BBC should not be rewarding extremism.' Mrs Badenoch has previously called for the group to be banned from Glastonbury. And last year, Kneecap won a discrimination case against the Government in Belfast High Court after Mrs Badenoch tried to refuse them a £14,250 funding award when she was a minister. Kneecap took aim at Mrs Badenoch in their latest single, The Recap, released just before their headline set at London's Wide Awake festival in May. The song mocked her attempts to block their arts funding and the Conservative Party's general election loss. On Wednesday, Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise Ó Cairealláin and J Ó Dochartaigh at Westminster magistrates' court in 'Free Mo Chara' T-shirts. During the proceedings, the court heard the 27-year-old is 'well within his rights' to voice his opinions on Israel and Palestine, but the alleged incident at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, north London, is a 'wholly different thing'. Ó hAnnaidh was released on unconditional bail until his next hearing at the same court on Aug 20. Following the hearing, the rapper said: 'For anybody going to Glastonbury, you can see us there at 4pm on the Saturday. 'If you can't be there we'll be on the BBC, if anybody watches the BBC. We'll be at Wembley in September. 'But most importantly: free, free Palestine.' The charge came after a counter-terrorism police investigation after the historical gig footage came to light, which also allegedly shows the group calling for the deaths of MPs. In April, Kneecap apologised last month to the families of murdered MPs but said footage of the incident had been 'exploited and weaponised'. In an initial post in response to the charge, Kneecap said: '14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us. 'We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves, this is political policing, this is a carnival of distraction. 'We are not the story, genocide is, as they profit from genocide, they use an 'anti-terror law' against us for displaying a flag thrown on stage. A charge not serious enough to even warrant their crown court, instead a court that doesn't have a jury. What's the objective? 'To restrict our ability to travel. To prevent us speaking to young people across the world. To silence voices of compassion. To prosecute artists who dare speak out. 'Instead of defending innocent people, or the principles of international law they claim to uphold, the powerful in Britain have abetted slaughter and famine in Gaza, just as they did in Ireland for centuries. Then, like now, they claim justification. 'The IDF units they arm and fly spy plane missions for are the real terrorists, the whole world can see it.' A BBC spokesman said: 'As the broadcast partner, the BBC will be bringing audiences extensive music coverage from Glastonbury, with artists booked by the festival organisers. 'While the BBC doesn't ban artists, our plans will ensure that our programming will meet our editorial guidelines. Decisions about our output will be made in the lead-up to the festival.'

A LEADING car brand has launched a new SUV that looks just like a Land Rover and is easier on the wallet. The Chinese car firm have obviously taken inspiration from one of the biggest SUV brands on the market but for a fraction of the price. 1 Chery's 2026 Tiggo 7 Sport and Tiggo 7 Plus have been unveiled with both designs looking almost identical to Range Rover's hugely popular Evoque. But it has one major advantage over its European competitors as its set to hit the roads for £9,000. Pricing for the new Tiggo 7 Sports starts at 87,900 yuan in Asia, or around £9,100. The higher end Tiggo 7 Plus is priced slightly higher at 91,900 yuan or £9,400. Compare that to a brand new Evoque and you're looking at an eye-watering £44,000 with costs even exceeding the £50,000 mark in some instances. It's still not as cheap if you purchase a second-hand Evoque which come in at around £20,000. The new Tiggo is not yet sold in Europe and prices are likely to be higher when the model is eventually made available due to importing costs. But British motorists will be happy to hear that, because of the lack of tariffs on brand-new Chinese cars, they will likely pay considerably less than their US or EU counterparts. In Australia, the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid has been made available with models hitting the market for $39,990. That would equate to around £19,000 in the UK but this is still cheaper than many Western-build SUVs. The Tiggo 7 is available in a range of fuel types including mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric options. But those keen on getting their hands on one may have to wait a while as Chery intends to first expand to Eastern European markets. Eastern European nations could see a launch in the second half of this year with an initial focus on midsize plug-in hybrid models. The Tiggo 7 Sport comes with a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine variant delivering 115 kW with a six-speed dual clutch transmission.
