Red Sea Souk opens submissions for 2025 Project Market
This is an opportunity for filmmakers to access funding, connect with decision-makers, and bring their stories to audiences around the world.
The Red Sea Souk Project Market has opened submissions for its projects-in-development or production and works-in-progress programmes, set to run during the fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival from December 4 to 13, 2025, in the historic district of Al-Balad, Jeddah. The Souk will be held from December 6 to 10, bringing together filmmakers, producers, investors, and key industry professionals from across the globe.
The initiative aims to support emerging talent from Saudi Arabia, the wider Arab world, Africa and Asia. It offers filmmakers the opportunity to advance their work through international co-production opportunities, industry mentorship, and direct access to distributors, sales agents, and festival programmers. The Project Market will feature 12 projects across fiction, animation, and creative documentaries, all led by directors of Arab, African, or Asian nationality or origin. Selected participants will receive dedicated mentorship, pitch their projects, and engage in one-on-one meetings with potential partners. These selected projects will be showcased alongside the Red Sea Lodge's 12 in-development projects.
Additionally, the Works-in-Progress section will present eight feature films currently in post-production. These works will be screened exclusively to accredited professionals, with director-producer teams receiving valuable editorial feedback and targeted exposure to key players in global distribution and exhibition.
Submissions are open until June 20, 2025 for Projects-in-Development or Production, and until July 29, 2025 for Works-in-Progress. The initiative offers a significant platform for filmmakers to secure funding, refine their work, and reach broader international audiences.

China-UAE relations continue to open new horizons for development

The event aimed to highlight the role of media in deepening the strategic partnership between China and Arab countries—particularly the UAE, which enjoys strong economic, social, and trade ties with China, ties that media has significantly helped foster. Xian Yi, Deputy Consul General of Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Dubai, emphasized that as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) advances, China-UAE relations continue to open new horizons for development. He noted Hainan's pivotal role in this collaboration, describing the new centre as a milestone in strengthening the friendly ties between the two nations. He also highlighted the importance of deepening media cooperation and cultural exchanges, expressing hope that the centre will serve as a vital bridge fostering mutual understanding and people-to-people friendship between China and the UAE. Shahab Shayan, Regional Director, Asia Pacific at Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, stressed that China remains one of Dubai's top source markets. He noted that the direct air routes between Dubai and Hainan have significantly facilitated cultural, tourism, and trade exchanges. He added that the new media centre will become a platform for bilateral cultural dialogue and content collaboration, predicting deeper future cooperation in tourism, business, and investment under the BRI framework. Wang Lie, Deputy director of Hainan Broadcast station, stated that the group is committed to fostering a more open China that creates broader development opportunities for the world. He called for innovative efforts to deepen cooperation, enhance mutual understanding, and promote intercultural learning. Hainan Media Group, he said, will invest fully in developing the centre to meet the expectations of both Chinese and Arab audiences, using its media capabilities to bridge cultural differences and facilitate meaningful bilateral communication across various fields. During the inauguration, Hainan Media Group signed a cooperation agreement with China Arab TV. The initial phase of the collaboration focuses on showcasing Hainan's Free Trade Port achievements in institutional innovation, industrial openness, trade facilitation, and cooperation with the UAE. The partnership includes programme exchange and joint content production targeting audiences in 22 Arab countries, aiming to strengthen regional understanding of the Free Trade Port's development and to contribute new 'touchpoints' in China-Arab friendship and shared future narratives. The event concluded with a dialogue session featuring Chinese and Arab media figures, including Wang Lie, Deputy director of Hainan Broadcast Station; Mohamed Beiji, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of China Arab TV; Prof. Amer Fakhoury, Professor of International Law at the American University in the Emirates; and Prof. Mohamad AlNaeb, President of Strategia centre for Studies. The discussion focused on mechanisms for enhancing media cooperation, leveraging the development experiences of both the UAE and China, and showcasing success stories in the media to deepen bilateral partnership. Dr. Amer Fakhoury emphasized that the UAE is not only a major commercial and financial hub in the Gulf and the Middle East, but also a vital partner along the Belt and Road. He pointed out the alignment between Hainan's strategy of continuous openness and the UAE's development vision, stressing the media's responsibility in telling the evolving story of China-UAE friendship. He called for enhanced cooperation in producing high-quality media content that resonates with both Chinese and Arab audiences. Prof. Mohamad AlNaeb noted that the BRI, initiated by President Xi Jinping, offers a roadmap for stable and sustainable cooperation between China and the UAE. He highlighted the similar regional dynamics of Hainan and Dubai, both positioned as high-quality development zones. He suggested practical cooperation in sectors such as trade, investment, green economy, and tourism, with media playing a key role in building stronger connections between the two peoples. Since 2023, delegations from Hainan Province have paid frequent visits to the UAE, bolstering industrial cooperation in energy, digital economy, healthcare, tourism, and beyond. Investment collaboration between Hainan and Arab countries continues to expand, with bilateral trade in goods growing at an annual average of over 30% in the past three years. In 2024 alone, trade volume is expected to exceed 24 billion yuan. Notably, direct flights now connect Haikou with both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, forming an 'aerial Silk Road.' Coupled with visa-free travel policies, these routes have significantly boosted tourism flows from the Arab world to Hainan. Agricultural and environmental cooperation has also flourished, exemplified by the successful cultivation of 25,000 date palm seedlings donated by the UAE, now thriving in Wenchang. Meanwhile, Hainan's local produce such as Danzhou eggplants and Sanya okra have made their way onto Middle Eastern tables, marking a symbolic leap from 'seed to supply chain.' Beyond trade, port partnerships between Yangpu Port and Abu Dhabi Port have been established, laying the foundation for deeper cooperation in emerging areas like digital commerce and maritime finance. This reflects a transition from 'hard connectivity' in infrastructure to 'soft connectivity' across institutions and industries—advancing the vision of a shared free trade network between Hainan and the Arab world.

Renowned Nabati poet Rashid Sharar is not only a towering literary figure but also a cultural architect whose influence has spanned generations. Revered as one of the UAE's most eloquent voices, Rashid Sharar has played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting traditional Bedouin poetry—locally known as Nabati—while mentoring emerging talents and shaping the literary scene across the GCC. Rashid Sharar, was honored in a special ceremony held at the Majlis Omar Mohamed Zubair Al Marzooqi in the Al Warqaa 3 area of Dubai. The event was organized by members of the Majlis Al Zubair as a gesture of appreciation for his outstanding contributions to modern and contemporary Arabic literature and poetry. The tribute recognized Rashid Sharar's lifelong dedication to enriching the Emirati and Arab literary scene through his unique poetic voice and his role in preserving and evolving Arabic poetic traditions. The gathering brought together literary figures, cultural leaders, and admirers of his work, all celebrating his legacy and the lasting impact he has made on Arabic poetry. Appointed by an Emiri decree from His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Rashid Al Sharar founded and led the Sharjah Center for Popular Poetry, which he operated for eleven years. Under his leadership, the center became a hub for nurturing poetic talent and safeguarding the region's oral traditions. Today, it continues that legacy under the name Al Hira Literary Council, still echoing with the voice and vision Al Sharar instilled. For nearly four decades, Rashid Al Sharar has been a prominent producer and presenter of cultural and poetry programs across various platforms, bringing the beauty of verse to homes across the Gulf. His impact extended into print media as well, where he served as editor of literary and poetry sections in several newspapers and magazines, including his most recent role at Kul Al Usra magazine. His contributions have not gone unnoticed. Over the years, he has been awarded numerous medals and honors, a testament to his role in enriching Arab culture. Among the most prestigious was an award bestowed upon him by the late Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, recognizing his lifelong dedication to literature and cultural preservation. Beyond the written and spoken word, Rashid Al Sharar's lyrical genius has reached millions through songs performed by major Arab artists. Voices like Mohammed Abdo, Mohammed Omar, Mehad Hamad, and Aydah Al Menhali have brought his poetry to the musical stage, blending heritage with melody in a way that continues to captivate listeners across generations. Today, Rashid Al Sharar remains a symbol of literary excellence and cultural depth in the UAE. Sharjah shines light on experience as World Book Capital
The authority's participation in the largest event of its kind in Latin America, which runs until June 22, comes as part of Brazil's celebration of World Book Capitals following the selection of Rio de Janeiro as the World Book Capital for 2025. This prestigious title, which Sharjah held in 2019, recognises the emirate's global standing in supporting culture and the publishing industry. Through its pavilion, SBA shed light on the diversity of the cultural movement in the UAE and the wider Arab world, highlighting major achievements in knowledge, literature and publishing. The authority actively engaged in panel discussions and held meetings with publishers, translators and cultural organisations, to strengthen knowledge exchange and expand opportunities for translating works to and from Arabic. As part of its efforts to build lasting partnerships, SBA invited key players in the publishing industry to take part in the emirate's leading international initiatives, including the Sharjah International Book Fair, the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival, the Sharjah Publishers Conference, the Sharjah International Library Conference and other prominent global events held throughout the year. Commitment to cultural dialogue His Highness Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, affirmed that the authority's participation in the Rio International Book Fair reflects the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who places culture at the heart of development strategies and views books as a powerful tool for building bridges of dialogue with the world. The Sharjah-led new literary movement As part of the cultural programme at the book fair, SBA organised a panel discussion titled "The heritage of Arab literature and Sharjah-led new literary movement", which explored the evolution of the Emirati literary landscape and the emirate's vital contribution to nurturing writers and advancing cultural initiatives. The session featured renowned Emirati authors whose works have been translated into Portuguese by SBA, including Abdul Hamid Ahmad, author of 'On the edge of the day'; Lulwah Al Mansouri, author of 'We came out of the rib of a mountain'; and Nasser Al Dhaheri, author of 'Wearing salt and his palms are ash'. On the sidelines of the event, SBA organised a special book signing ceremony for the translated titles, underscoring the authority's commitment to deepening cultural exchange and strengthening the international presence of Emirati literature. Showcasing Sharjah's publishing initiatives During its participation, SBA highlighted several of its leading initiatives in publishing and knowledge exchange. These include the Sharjah International Book Fair, the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival, and the Sharjah Publishing City Free Zone. The authority also introduced the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur), an initiative designed to support publishing industries in emerging markets, and the Sharjah Literary Agency, which works to protect the rights of Arab authors and publishers while expanding their international presence. The authority has also drawn attention to the role of Sharjah Public Libraries, one of the region's oldest cultural institutions, which has been promoting knowledge for more than a century. Publishers have been briefed on the specialist international conferences hosted annually in the emirate, including the Sharjah Publishers Conference, the Sharjah International Library Conference, the Booksellers Conference and the Sharjah Animation Conference. The Sharjah pavilion also hosted the PublisHer initiative, the global platform founded by Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi to champion the role of women in publishing and create meaningful opportunities for female publishers to connect, collaborate and exchange knowledge. The pavilion also showcased a curated selection of titles from Al Qasimi Publications, alongside a diverse range of works from the Department of Culture that highlight the depth and richness of Sharjah's cultural landscape. First held in 1983, the Rio International Book Fair has grown into Brazil's largest literary festival. Organised by the National Union of Book Publishers (SNEL) in collaboration with major publishing houses, the fair attracts hundreds of writers and more than 600,000 visitors each year, serving as a key platform for cultural exchange and the sharing of ideas.
