South African 1 500m record falls
South Africa's Tshepo Tshite delivered a stunning performance at the Diamond League meeting in Paris on Friday night, breaking the long-standing national 1 500m record in a blistering race that featured some of the world's fastest middle-distance athletes. Tshite, 28, crossed the line in 3:31.35, shaving more than half a second off the previous South African record of 3:31.93 set by Johan Cronje in 2013. It was Tshite's first national outdoor record, adding to his existing South African indoors records in both the 1 500m (3:35.06) and the mile (3:54.10). Fastest in recent history While Tshepo Tshite finished ninth in a stacked field, the race was one of the fastest in recent history. Athletics South Africa (ASA) president James Moloi praised Tshite's achievement while also calling for broader performance improvement across the national team ahead of major competitions, including the upcoming World Championships in Japan this September. 'As we congratulate Tshite for achieving his feat of breaking a record, we also take the opportunity to encourage all athletes to drastically improve their performances in order to reach podium positions,' said Moloi. 'We don't take anything away from him – for a national record is always an achievement to be celebrated. 'It becomes a new benchmark for others. 'We therefore congratulate Tshite, his coach, and all of his support staff.' Meanwhile, in the men's 5 000m event, fellow South African Adriaan Wildschutt finished 14th in 13:28.67, well behind Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, who stormed to victory in a world-class 12:47.84. Athletics SA cover recent controversies in parliament presentation
Athletics South Africa (ASA) reaffirmed its action relating to acting CEO Terrence Magogodela, who received Lotto funding illegally, which he subsequently paid back. In its presentation to parliament on Tuesday, ASA president James Moloi said the criminal investigation had not been related to the national federation and added that lawyers had advised the board that 'there was no criminal conduct on the part of the acting CEO'. Magogodela had received the money 'from one of the actual perpetrators and at best was morally responsible for refunding the amount'. After being placed on special leave for a month in 2022, Magogodela was allowed to return to work. 'The SIU readily accepted the documents presented by the acting CEO in support of the funds received and agreed to resolve all issues with him,' ASA said in its presentation, which Moloi read out. 'In light of the above, it made perfect sense for the acting CEO to return to full-time duties rather than for him to remain on extended suspension on full pay.'

Photo: AFP Image: AFP Caster Semenya is confident in SA's medal prospects at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo in September, but called for more backing for South African athletes. TeamSA, especially the sprinters, are continuing to light up international meets. Sprinter Akani Simbine is unbeaten in the 100m so far this year, while youngster Bayanda Walaza is staking his claim as the heir apparent. Zakithi Nene boasts the fastest time over the men's 400m so far in 2025. 'I think if you can continue being consistent and working hard we'll do great,' Semenya told Independent Media on Sunday at the Comrades. 'Simbine is doing quite well; he has been consistent and unbeaten this year, so I'm happy with where he is. And obviously, the young boy Walaza is coming okay. I wish them the best of luck in terms of being consistent throughout the season and wish them the best of luck in the championship. 'Then in the road running, we have the Glenrose Xabas who are doing well. Adriaan Wildschutt is doing great, so if we continue being great like that I don't see a problem.' The former multiple Olympic and world champion over 800m is also confident of current star Prudence Sekgodiso chances over the distance at the showpiece event. 'The best that she could do is to make sure that she's patient enough and make sure that she eyes being in the final, because once you are in the final anything is possible. 'As for the rest of the track and field family, they're in a good state. We were able to win medals in the world relays.' Semenya insists that they won't succeed without backing. 'It also comes down to the leadership, the management. They need to learn how to invest in these athletes, making sure that athletes are well taken care of,' she said.
