There is little doubt that Tokyo is one of the world's great urban experiments. The city's aesthetic appeal seems to forever move back and forth through classical building designs and suburban sprawls to revitalization projects and ultra-modern experiments that dazzle as architectural expressions of change. Not bad for a nation famous for tradition.
Now, if Tokyo is a great urban project, its rail system is one of the many tools that opened it up for its citizens. Take the Toei Asakusa Line, for example. The first to offer through-services connecting Narita and Haneda airports without requiring a train change, the pink line whisks well over a million passengers daily between Nishi-Magome and Oshiage stations. Tokyo's famed modernity extends to recreating its past. Located a short walk from the current Shimbashi Station, the original Old Shimbashi Station was built in 1872, locomoting Japan into the modern world. Designed by the U.S. architect Richard Bridgens, the exact details of his Meiji Period design have since been lost. After having been thumped out of existence by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, a reconstruction had to wait until 2004. It used a 3D technological analysis of photographs and artworks featuring the former Meiji-period station. The result is a memorial merging of Japan's historical and modern tracks.
Higashi-Ginza Station is home to the kabuki theater, Kabuki-za. Recognized by UNESCO, Japan's classic theatrical art has its roots in the seventeenth century. The irony is that, though seen as a bastion of tradition, Kabuki-za has undergone constant change in the pursuit of keeping its tradition alive. Reborn several times due to natural and human disasters, the current building design by renowned architect Kengo Kuma is its fifth iteration. Kuma was tasked to work with the then baroque Japanese revivalist style, leading to a building design that combines classic architecture with modern accessibility, a uniquely clear cultural standout amidst its modern neighbors.
Never merely a collection of buildings, the historical space of Tokyo (formerly known as Edo) also featured elegantly landscaped gardens, many of which have endured the transformations of the city to this day. Kyu-Shiba Rikyu, easily accessible from Daimon Station, is an extraordinarily beautiful expression of this open design. Created on reclaimed land from Tokyo Bay, the gardens were originally part of the residences of Edo period feudal lords. Opened to the public in 1924, the garden's 4.3 hectares now act as an ornamental retreat for the public. In search of solace, local salarymen and visitors from across the city are drawn to reflect on the seasonal meanings embedded in the garden's hills, ponds and rock design elements.
The final stop of the line is Oshiage Station and it is here that Tokyo's ultimate architectural experiment finds its home. The tallest structure in Japan and the third tallest in the world, Tokyo Skytree is an eye-raising 634 meters high of monster engineering. Built as a broadcast tower with restaurants, shopping complexes, a planetarium and an observation deck, Tokyo Skytree's neofuturistic template combines the power of technology with unconventional design. The inspiration behind the tower's shape is said to derive from the curve of a samurai's katana blade as well as Japan's traditional pagoda designs. The result is an awesome display of tradition and future that is exacerbated by its truly massive presence and position within Tokyo's traditional downtown Sumida district.
It doesn't take all that much to find change within Japan's long-standing traditions. Its architectural and urban designs have a history of adapting to the times, all while bringing forth that unique sensibility so associated with the country. Through the Toei Asakusa Line, one of the capital's many subway routes, a discovery of Meiji period recreations, Edo era landscape experiences and future-driven design are all part of the appeal.

The Yomiuri Shimbun The exterior of Sekizenkan is reminiscent of the bathhouse in the movie 'Spirited Away.' NAKANOJO, Gunma — Sekizenkan is an old ryokan inn in Nakanojo, Gunma Prefecture, that is believed to have inspired the bathhouse in the acclaimed anime film 'Spirited Away,' and it is still visited by many fans. About 330 years have passed since Sekizenkan was founded in 1694. The ryokan, located in a historical hot spring area called Shima Onsen hot spa, allows guests to experience a journey back in time. Guests cross a red bridge, the symbol of the ryokan, before reaching the entrance while listening to the gentle babbling of a river. The inn's Honkan main building, Japan's oldest existing wooden bathhouse, was built in the Edo period (1603-1867). It was a two-story building at first, but another story was added in the Meiji era (1868-1912). 'We can observe the architectural changes since the Edo period,' Yurie Kurosawa, 44, the ryokan's 21st president, said proudly. Until about 60 years ago, most of the guests visited the ryokan to cure an illness or heal wounds, and they stayed for more than two weeks. They brought futons for themselves and hung their laundry along the outer corridor. In the main building, guests still prepare their futons in modestly furnished Japanese-style rooms like in the old days. The 'Roman no Tunnel' at the end of the main building is reminiscent of the tunnel in the anime through which the heroine Chihiro and other characters pass. I went up in a nearby elevator to a wooden ryokan building called Sansou, which was built in 1936 because the number of guests increased mainly due to advances in transportation. The techniques of traditional craftsmen can be seen in the rooms, such as the intricate craftwork of kumiko shoji sliding doors and tokonoma alcoves. Then Prime Minister Hideki Tojo stayed in Sansou in 1942. Going further up the elevator, I reached Kashoutei, a ryokan building that has modern guest rooms. The bath is named 'Genroku no Yu' and is located beside the main building. There are five bathtubs in the tiled floor, and the windows are arch-shaped in the Taisho Romanesque style. The changing room and the baths are combined in an unusual style, and that structure remains as it was when it was constructed in 1930. The ryokan offers guests a tour of the buildings three times a week. On a busy day, the tour has as many as about 30 guests. 'I felt the long history of the ryokan during the tour. I was also impressed by the low ceilings and old glass,' said a man, 60, who participated in a tour in late April. 'I want to maintain the therapeutic style of the inn,' Kurosawa said. Sekizenkan will continue to convey traditional Japanese hot spring culture. A world of mystery and history awaits guests at the Secret Museum Yanai, Yamaguchi, the first museum in Japan to have the locations of the exhibits be a complete secret. Nestled within the Town of White Walls in Yanai, Yamaguchi, at the western end of Japan's main island, this innovative experience will treat visitors to exhibits gathered from across the nation, as well as a puzzle-filled adventure, when it opens on June 21. Yanai was once an integral port town along the Kitamaebune shipping route, linking Osaka with Hokuriku and Hokkaido via the Sea of Japan, so the organizers of this museum have taken this history and created an intriguing backstory for guests to get fully-immersed in their visit. ▼ Aomori nebuta float by Shunichi Kitamura (Aomori) Countless historical and culturally significant items used to pass through the town of Yanai and many ended up in the hands of the merchant families. His father eventually caved in and agreed, and with other families soon following suit, a new museum was born. ▼ Kisaka Shobundo However, the owner of Kisaka Shobundo only agreed to the plan as long as the heir promised to satisfy a few conditions: Guests must always visit Kisaka Shobundo first. The locations of the other exhibits must not be made public. Only those who overcome a challenge can be granted access to the treasured belongings ensconced throughout the town. There was naturally only one logical conclusion to such demands: the creation of a secret museum with a puzzle-solving experience. With such a creative backstory, visitors will feel like they have taken on the role of a movie protagonist as they move from location to location, solving codes and exchanging secret messages. ▼ Plant lights by Tadaharu Kawamura However, puzzle-solving is not for everyone, so the organizers have seen fit to include a museum-only tour as well. People are welcome to choose whichever of the two plans best suit their schedules and interests. If you're just interested in the exhibits, it's a one-hour tour for 2,300 yen (US$16), however if you want a battle of wits, it will be a three-hour experience costing 3,300 yen. However, do note that a drink order is required during the cafe puzzle stop. ▼ Dip Art by Sakae With the given premise that this museum is based around several merchant families, it has led to the museum actually being a Japan's first decentralized museum, with no main exhibit room.
