Explosions, falling debris: A day of panic in Srinagar

Hindustan Times11-05-2025

The people of Srinagar were rattled out of their sleep up as sounds of explosions rocked the city as early as 5.45 am. As the firing intensified and drone sighting followed, a sense of fear and panic spread in the city, as well as Jammu and Kashmir.
Around three to four explosions were heard across Srinagar hours after the city was shaken by two big blasts late on Friday evening. Reports of drones swarming over the Srinagar airport started pouring in and the fear only increased even as India's defence systems thwarted the strikes.
The evening started a little better for the people with the announcement of a ceasefire, sparking a sense of return towards normalcy, only for the situation to worsen with drone sightings, ceasefire violations and blast-like sounds hours later.
'I thought a bomb was dropped on us. This is the first time that I have witnessed a war-like situation in my life with drones and jets flying all over us. I am still shivering,' says Aneesa, a 22-year-old college student.
Maleeha, 13, was woken up by explosions and rushed to look through the window. 'Why is it happening here? What have we done? Isn't war fought between armies?' She questioned, with no answers in sight.
As the day progressed, there were more sounds of explosions around Srinagar airport and in Awantipora, the site of technical airport.
Even for the people who witnessed the peak of militancy in the 1990s and 2000s, the fresh experience was shaking.
Danish Ahmad, a 42-year-old teacher, says the day was like nothing seen before. 'We are mostly used to bullet fire or tear gas canister explosions. Missiles and drones are new to us,' he said. 'The ground shook and I sent my kids inside for safety. Nothing feels safe,' he said.
Normal life was affected with traffic thin and slow economic activity across the city. People preferred to stay indoors owing to the fear.
The situation became scarier after people reported sightings of debris and projectiles falling from the skies at Lasjan and the Dal Lake.
At Lasjan, which is opposite the Badami Bagh cantonment in Srinagar, the debris of a missile-like object fell between a cluster of homes, damaging the courtyard. People reported witnessing smoke emanating after something fell into the Dal Lake.
'When there was an explosion in the morning, something fell from the sky. It was in two pieces. We called the village head. Later, the police took the object away,' said Mohammad Ashraf, a local.
The officials in New Delhi, in the morning briefing, acknowledged that Srinagar and Awantipora air bases in Kashmir, and Udhampur airbase were targets of Pakistan's thwarted attacks.
'Pakistan employed UCAP, drone, loitering munitions and fighter aircrafts to target civilian areas and military infrastructure... several harassment attacks were also attempted from Srinagar till Nalia at more than 26 locations,' Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Vyomika Singh said at the press briefing.

The Yoga Day proceedings culminated with a mandatory 'Sankalp' by one and all present to embrace the Yogic exercises as part of modern-day lifestyle before dispersing from Lichubari Greens, the venue at the Jorhat Military Station. The Air Force Station in New Delhi also celebrated the International Day of Yoga under the theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health.' He lauded their leadership as 'inspiring' and described the state's initiative to promote yoga as 'commendable.' Over three lakh individuals joined him for a mass yoga session in the coastal city, reinforcing this year's message that 'yoga belongs to everyone' and brings the world together. The Prime Minister recalled India's initiative at the United Nations in 2014 to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day, a move that received wide global support in record time. Israel Strikes Iran's Isfahan Nuclear Facility Again As Conflict Escalates

Israel has carried out a second wave of airstrikes targeting Iran's Isfahan nuclear facility, shortly after Tehran launched a volley of five ballistic missiles toward central Israel overnight. The latest strike follows the initial Israeli attacks on June 13th, which targeted both nuclear and military infrastructure in Iran. According to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), around 50 fighter jets were involved in bombing Iranian positions. However, Iranian state-affiliated Fars news agency reported that no hazardous material leakage occurred. Isfahan plays a central role in Iran's nuclear program, housing a uranium conversion facility and a nuclear fuel fabrication plant. "Isfahan we targeted in the first 24 hours of our operation, but we carried out a second wave of strikes there overnight, deepening our achievements and advancing the damage to the facility," an Israeli official told AFP. The same official added that additional targets were hit: "a couple more centrifuge production sites" in recent days. He emphasised that repeated strikes have "dealt a severe blow to Iran's centrifuge production capabilities." Centrifuges are essential in enriching uranium. They function by spinning uranium hexafluoride (UF6) gas at high speeds to separate isotopes of uranium. In retaliation, Iran fired five ballistic missiles at central Israel, triggering air raid sirens in Tel Aviv and several nearby towns around 2:40 a.m. All incoming missiles were intercepted by Israeli air defences. While no injuries or direct hits were reported, debris from one interception caused a fire on the roof of an apartment building. Fire crews were dispatched and quickly brought the blaze under control. Since June 13, Iran has launched over 470 ballistic missiles and approximately 1,000 drones targeting Israel, according to Israeli authorities. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) intercepted 40 UAVs overnight and struck launchers preparing to target Israel. On Saturday night, guided by intelligence from the IDF Intelligence Directorate, the IAF also struck missile launchers and a dual-barrel UAV launcher in Isfahan that were poised to fire at Israel.

International Day of Yoga celebrated at Air Force Station in Delhi

New Delhi [India], June 21 (ANI): The 11th International Day of Yoga was celebrated at the Air Force Station in New Delhi under the theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health.' 'The gathering was inspired by the live address of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a visionary tone for global wellness and unity,' IAF said in a post on X. 'Unified in breath and balance, Air Warriors performed yoga asana in unison, fostering wellness, resonating with the IAF motto of People First Mission Always,' it added. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated in the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. Taking to 'X', the Union Home Minister extended his wishes on the International Yoga Day and said that yoga brings unity among the mind, body and brain. Amit Shah stated that in today's world, yoga is becoming a part of the daily routine of people across the world. 'Yoga, which brings unity among mind, body and brain, has today become a part of the daily routine of people all over the world. On the occasion of 'International Yoga Day', performed yoga with the residents in Ahmedabad', Amit Shah said in a X post. Meanwhile, 2121 participants held the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds while performing yoga in Gujarat's Vadnagar on Saturday and achieved the Guinness World Record. According to Richard Stunning, official adjudicator at Guinness World Records, a record with a title for the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga began on Saturday. The minimum number of participants for the record was 250; they had to hold the Yoga Cobra pose for at least a minute. A total of 2184 participants breached the one-minute timeline; they ended up holding the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds. The Guinness World Records discounted 64 participants, after which 2121 participants held the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds to clinch the Guinness World Record. 'The Guinness World Records title that starts today is the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga, simultaneously. We set a guideline that everyone had to do it for at least a minute each, and we set a minimum target of 250 participants. Today, they did it for more than a minute, they did it for two minutes and nine seconds, and the total was 2185. We had to discount 64 participants. So the confirmed title is 2121 participants. Given we set a minimum of 250, this is smashing the Guinness World Record. Congratulations to everyone involved, and it's a fantastic achievement', Richard Stunning told ANI. (ANI)
