Centre brings parity in gratuity for NPS, UPS pensioners
The Personnel Ministry has brought parity between National Pension Scheme pensioners and Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) pensioners in the eligibility of gratuity and both the categories of pensioners will now be eligible for ₹25 lakh gratuity. The Ministry has also given the employees the option to avail benefits under the old pension scheme (OPS) on death during service or discharge from government service on account of invalidation or disability.
Briefing about the decisions, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry Jitendra Singh said the move addressed a significant demand of government staff and brings parity in retirement benefits, and the new provision reflected the government's commitment to ensure social security for all categories of employees under the National Pension System.
The Ministry has issued two orders on these matters. 'UPS has been notified as an option under the NPS. Therefore, it has been decided that the Central government civil employees who opt for UPS under NPS shall also be eligible for option for availing benefits under UPS or the CCS (Pension) Rules, 2021 or the CSS (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 2023 in the event of death of the government servant during service or his discharge on the ground of invalidation or disablement,' the order said.
Outdated provisions
Dr. Singh added that the Centre had taken pride in doing away with redundant rules rather than creating new ones. He said over 1,600 outdated provisions — many of them colonial-era legacies — were repealed. 'The decision to make job interviews non-evaluative for certain categories, announced from the Red Fort by the Prime Minister and implemented nationwide by January 2016 was flagged as a key move towards fairness and transparency in recruitment,' he added.
He said the amendments to the Prevention of Corruption Act sought to balance accountability with protection for well-performing officials, while changes in how cases of unfair means in examinations are handled have been aimed at protecting students from the fallout of organised cheating rackets. 'We are here to punish the racketeers, not the students,' the Minister said.

Karnataka min writes to Jaishankar seeking clarification on denial of clearance for US visit
Bengaluru, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeking a formal clarification on the denial of political clearance for his scheduled official visit to the United States of America. Karnataka min writes to Jaishankar seeking clarification on denial of clearance for US visit He said the visit scheduled from June 14 to 27 was planned around two significant international forums, the BIO International Convention in Boston and the Design Automation Conference in San Francisco. However, due to denial of permission, according to sources, he was forced to cut short his trip and returned from Paris to Bengaluru on Wednesday night. According to Kharge, he had scheduled several official meetings with top companies, universities and institutions in the US where he was to represent the Government of Karnataka to explore collaborations, attract investments and create employment opportunities for the state. Taking to social media platform 'X' on Friday, he said that he has written to Jaishankar, seeking clarity on why political clearance for his official visit to the US was denied. "I do so with a deep sense of responsibility to the people of Karnataka, to whom I am duty-bound. The visit was aimed at strengthening collaborations, attracting investments and creating employment opportunities for the state," he said. Kharge expressed that denying a Cabinet Minister and the "custodian of one of the world's largest technology clusters", the ability to carry out such official responsibilities without explanation, raises serious concerns. It was not only against the interests of the state but also undermines the spirit of cooperative federalism. In his letter dated June 19, Kharge stated that participation in such visits are aligned with the national priorities and would have directly supported the larger vision of Viksit Bharat laid out by the Prime Minister. He stated that in the absence of a formal communication from the Ministry outlining the reasons for denial, it becomes difficult to assess and plan future engagements of this nature. It also raises concerns about the consistency of the process, especially when the visits are official, sector-critical and in national interest. "I would therefore request the Ministry to kindly provide a formal explanation for the denial and consider a more transparent and consultative approach in handling such official engagements in the future," he added. Rajnath Singh likely to visit China next week for SCO meet
New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to travel to China next week to attend a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), people familiar with the matter said on Friday. It will be the first visit to China by a senior Indian minister after the ties came under severe strain following the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh that began in May 2020. New Delhi and Beijing are in the process of finalising Singh's visit to China, the people said. The SCO defence ministers' conclave is scheduled to be held in Qingdao from June 25 to 27. It is learnt that Singh may hold a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, on the sidelines of the SCO conclave. Live Events China is hosting the meeting in its capacity as the current chair of the SCO. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020, and a deadly clash at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between the two neighbours. The face-off effectively ended following the completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points, Demchok and Depsang, under an agreement struck on October 21, 2024. In December, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Beijing and held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi under the framework of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary dispute. The decision to revive the SR mechanism and other such dialogue formats was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23. The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up a disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok. PTI Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
