Crown Prince meets Philippines, Cambodia leaders in Kuala Lampur

KUALA LUMPUR: Representing His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah held separate meetings with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr of the Philippines and Prime Minister Dr Hun Manet of Cambodia on the sidelines of the second ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China summit in Kuala Lumpur
At the start of the meeting with President Marcos, the Crown Prince conveyed greetings from His Highness the Amir to the Philippine leader. Both sides reviewed the bilateral relations between Kuwait and the Philippines, exploring ways to further strengthen and develop cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They also discussed recent regional and international developments.
During the meeting with Prime Minister Hun Manet, the two parties examined the current state of bilateral relations between Kuwait and Cambodia. Discussions focused on supporting and enhancing these relations for the benefit of both countries and their peoples, alongside exchanges on key regional and global issues.
Both meetings were attended by Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs at the Crown Prince's Diwan Mazen Issa Al-Issa, Assistant Foreign Minister for the Minister's Office Affairs Ambassador Bader Saleh Al-Tunayan, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Sameeh Johar Hayat, with Kuwait's Ambassador to Malaysia Rashid Mohammed Al-Saleh also present during the Cambodia meeting. — KUNA

Cambodia closes 2 more border checkpoints with Thailand
PHNOM PENH, June 22, (Xinhua): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Sunday that two more border crossings with Thailand were completely shut down amid an ongoing border dispute between the two ASEAN member states. Hun Manet said the Thai army Saturday night informed the governor of Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province about its unilateral decision to close Choub Korki border checkpoint from Sunday onwards. "I agreed with the governor's response that we will also close that border checkpoint permanently," Hun Manet said in a post on his official social media platforms. "I also ordered the governor to inform the Thai side that Cambodia has also decided to close another checkpoint at Choam, altogether with Choub Korki checkpoint from today onwards," he added. The Cambodian prime minister said that since June 7, the Thai army has unilaterally implemented closures of border checkpoints between Cambodia and Thailand without much consideration of its negative effects on the people of both countries. "It has never been Cambodia's intention to cause difficulty for people in our both countries who need to use border checkpoints. Yet, if the Thai army continues to use this method to put pressure on Cambodia, Cambodia can answer accordingly at any time," Hun Manet said. The Thai army has announced the closure of the trade point at Chong Sai Taku in Buriram province, effective from Saturday. In a statement on Sunday, the Thai army said that it has implemented control measures for opening and closing all types of crossing points along the Thai-Cambodian border to comply with the security situation. Thai media reported on Sunday that the Thai army prepared to close two more crossing points in response to the Cambodian side's announcement to close two border crossings. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday issued a public advisory urging Thai citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Cambodia due to heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries. In a statement, the ministry called on Thai nationals currently in Cambodia to exercise increased caution, avoid protest sites or high-risk areas, and closely follow the developments through official channels. Border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand have mounted recently after soldiers of both countries briefly exchanged gunfire in a disputed border area on May 28, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier.

Japan and South Korea mark 60 years of ties
TOKYO, June 22, (AP): Japan and South Korea are marking the 60th anniversary of the normalization of their diplomatic relations Sunday. The two Asian powers, rivals and neighbors, have often had little to celebrate, much of their rancor linked to Japan's brutal colonial rule of Korea in the early 20th century. Things have gotten better in recent years, but both nations - each a strong ally of the United States - now face political uncertainty and a growing unease about the future of their ties. South Korea's new liberal president, Lee Jae Myung, is determined to break sharply from the policies of his disgraced predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, who now faces a trial on charges of leading an insurrection over his imposition of martial law in December. Relations with Japan, however, are one area where Lee, who describes himself as a pragmatist in foreign policy, may find himself cautiously building on Yoon's approach. Before his removal from office in April, the conservative former president tried to repair relations with Japan. Yoon wanted to also tighten the countries' three-way security cooperation with Washington to counter North Korean nuclear threats. In 2023, Yoon announced a South Korea-funded compensation plan for colonial-era forced laborers. That decision caused a strong backlash from victims and their supporters, who had demanded direct payments from Japanese companies and a fresh apology from Tokyo. Yoon's outreach boosted tourism and business ties, but there's still lingering resentment in South Korea that Japan failed to reciprocate Seoul's diplomatic concession by addressing historical grievances more sincerely. While advocating for pragmatism and problem-solving in foreign policy, Lee has also long criticized Japan for allegedly clinging to its imperialist past and blamed that for hurting cooperation between the countries. Some experts say the stability of the countries' improved ties could soon be tested, possibly around the Aug. 15 anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule at the end of World War II, when Lee is expected to publicly address the nation's painful history with Japan. Kuwaitis evacuated from Iran begin arriving home
KUWAIT: The first group of Kuwaiti citizens evacuated from Iran arrived safely in Kuwait early Saturday morning, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues its full-scale emergency plan to secure the return of nationals stranded in the neighboring country. The flight, operated directly by Kuwait Airways, landed at Terminal 4 of Kuwait International Airport just after midnight, carrying 334 Kuwaiti men and women. The passengers had been transported overland to the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, where they boarded the evacuation flight. Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah received the returnees at the airport. The evacuation is part of Kuwait's proactive strategy to protect its people in light of the escalating conflict between Iran and the Zionist entity, who have traded missiles for nine days. No injuries have been reported among Kuwaiti nationals in Iran since the start of Zionist airstrikes last week, which have killed at least 430 people according to Iranian authorities.
