Nepal's former home minister, others arrested for trying to enter restricted area during pro-monarchy protest
Nepal's former Home Minister Kamal Thapa and about half a dozen others were arrested after they tried to enter a restricted area during a pro-monarchy protest in Kathmandu on Sunday (June 1, 2025), police said.
To reinstate monarchy and establish Nepal as a Hindu state, the pro-monarchy groups, including the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and RPP Nepal, protested at Narayan Chaur in Kathmandu on the fourth day of the agitation.
Rajendra Lingden, the RPP president and a staunch supporter of the monarchy, was leading the protest when agitators tried to break the security cordon and move towards Baluwatar, the Prime Minister's official residence, and clashed with the police, Kathmandu Valley Police spokesperson Apil Bohora said.
Mr Bohara said Mr Thapa and others were arrested for violating the restricted zone around the Narayanhiti Palace Museum area. About 1,200 pro-monarchy supporters, chanting slogans against the republican system and in favour of monarchy, participated in the protest, Mr Bohara said.
They carried photographs of former king Gyanendra Shah and chanted slogans against the Prime Minister K.P. Oli-led government.
The protesters said they would continue the protest until the monarchy was restored.

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 21 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh LoP and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led Congress government, accusing them of fostering an 'anti-Sanatan' mindset and systematically targeting the Hindu population of the state. Thakur was addressing a press conference in Shimla alongside State BJP President Rajiv Bindal. 'Ever since the Congress came to power, incidents against Hindus have been on the rise in Himachal Pradesh. The Chief Minister himself had publicly spoken of defeating a party that represents the ideology of 97 per cent Hindus of this state. That statement has now become the government's operating mindset,' said Thakur. 'The case of a missing Hindu girl is nothing but love jihad. Shockingly, the police deliberately delayed registering an FIR despite repeated requests from the family. It was only after angry public protests that the girl was traced,' referring to a recent incident in Paonta Sahib, Thakur said. He alleged that the government responded to the public outrage not with justice but political vengeance. 'Cases under BNS Section 109 have now been registered against senior BJP leaders, including Dr Rajiv Bindal and former minister Sukh Ram Chaudhary. This is nothing but a case of political retaliation,' Thakur added. He said during the present Congress regime there were multiple incidents pointing to Anti-Hindu bias. The BJP leader said that this was not the first time the Congress government had displayed open bias against Hindus or attempted to stifle the voice of the opposition. 'In the Manohar murder case in Chamba, the government didn't allow opposition leaders to visit the spot. In Nahan, a Muslim youth from Saharanpur slaughtered a cow and shared the photos on social media yet no legal action was taken,' he said. Thakur also raised the issue of an illegal mosque construction in Sanjauli, a matter that had sparked national outrage. 'Despite the uproar, the Congress government chose to remain silent,' he said. The LoP alleged that the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh was turning a blind eye to serious issues like 'love jihad', illegal religious structures, and alleged cow slaughter. 'All of this reveals a deliberate anti-Sanatan intent. If the false cases filed against BJP leaders are not withdrawn immediately, we will launch a massive statewide agitation,' Thakur warned. Rajiv Bindal, who was present at the press conference, echoed these sentiments and said the government was resorting to vendetta politics instead of focusing on law and order. The BJP leadership has demanded immediate withdrawal of what they termed as 'false and fabricated' charges and warned of intensified protests if their demand is not met. (ANI)

‘Youth from families who benefited from land reforms, welfare schemes are now swayed by Hindutva politics'
Youth belonging to second and third generation of families that benefited from the land reforms of the 1970s and other welfare schemes now embracing Hindutva ideology is among the factors responsible for the religious polarisation of communities in the coastal region, especially in Dakshina Kannada, according a legislator who was part of the KPCC's fact-finding committee that toured the region and looked into this issue. To counter Hindutva politics, Muslim youth too have been polarising the community on religious identity and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has been sowing seeds of 'communal politics' by raising funds, actively mobilising and organising the youth, the legislator said. Interim report The KPCC committee, which visited Dakshina Kannada district and met people from all walks of life — from politicians to ordinary citizens — submitted its interim report to party State president and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday. The legislator told The Hindu that a large section of the backward classes families in the district benefited from the land reforms introduced by the Congress government led by the late D. Devaraj Urs. The next generations of these families, both educated and uneducated, are 'intoxicated by the Hindutva ideology', he said. Hindutva groups have consolidated power by waging hate campaigns against minorities citing what they call historical incidents, the legislator said. 'Soft attitude' A 'soft attitude' towards Hindutva activists by government officials and the police force and the absence of credible Congress leadership in the region has given rise to communal tendencies, he said. 'The Muslims are asking us what have you (Congress) given to us and we are surprised,' the leader said. The BJP won seven of the eight Assembly constituencies in Dakshina Kannada district in the 2023 elections. The BJP also won the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha seats. Noting a strong presence of religious-based identities among the people, the member said, 'It is difficult to find any prevalence of the secular ideas in the region.' Ways of mobilising Besides increased religious events these days among Hindu and Muslim communities, the member said Hindus have been mobilised and organised through temple renovation programmes, bhajana mandali events and holding functions such as seminars and talks by inviting well-known Hindutva leaders. The BJP leaders have indulged in 'negative' politics to counter the 'positive' developments raised by the Congress, the leader claimed. Mangaluru and the regions surrounding it have witnessed three back-to-back murders: the mob lynching of 38-year-old Ashraf from Kerala, the hacking to death of 30-year-old double murder accused Suhas Shetty, and the killing of 32-year-old Abdul Rahiman, general secretary of a local masjid committee. All these deaths ignited communal passions in the region. Following these crimes, the State government has set up a special action force in the sensitive districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shivamogga.

Row between Raj Bhavan and Kerala govt. over Bharat Mata portrait escalates
The row between Raj Bhavan and the Kerala government over the former's use of an image of Bharat Mata sitting astride a lion and holding a saffron flag, arguably a symbol of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), at the official State functions hosted by the Raj Bhavan appeared to escalate on Saturday (June 21, 2025). On Saturday, despite protests from the government that the Raj Bhavan's use of the picture of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag at constitutional offices or State events was a mockery of the national flag and the Constitution, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar began the International Yoga Day celebrations by lighting a lamp in front of the very same garlanded picture, making it clear that his idea of patriotism aligned with the image of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag. On Thursday when the General Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, had walked out of an official function at the Raj Bhavan, protesting over the use of Bharat Mata picture at the State function, Mr. Arlekar had stood his ground, ruling out the removal of the picture from the Raj Bhavan's Central hall, the customary venue of official events. Following this, ABVP workers as well as SFI activists had taken out separate protests in the city, with the former showing the black flag at Mr. Sivankutty, while the SFI marched to the Raj Bhavan shouting slogans against Mr. Arlekar violating constitutional propriety. However, the BJP, which had thrown a surprise by posting a picture of Bharat Mata with the national flag in place of the saffron flag on an official Facebook post, did a volte face on Saturday. In an endorsement of the Raj Bhavan, it organised a programme at the Secretariat gate in the morning, with senior BJP leader V. Muraleedharan garlanding a picture of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag and lighting a lamp in front of it. This is the second day that the row over the saffron flag and Bharat Mata is spilling onto the streets. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) is also marching to the Raj Bhavan later in the day to protest against the Governor's continued use of RSS imagery to depict the country as a Hindu nation Meanwhile, All Kerala Private College Teachers' Association (AKPCTA), said in a statement here that the Raj Bhavan should not be treated as a museum to display Sangh Parivar symbols. It said that it was highly objectionable that the picture of Bharat Mata with the saffron flag was being repeatedly used by the Raj Bhavan even at the Scouts and Guides events. The CPI(M)'s official mouthpiece, Deshabhimani, also used its editorial on Saturday to condemn the Governor and to proclaim that he cannot turn the Raj Bhavan into an office of the RSS. Meanwhile, Congress leader Cherian Philip issued a statement here that the position of the Governor was 'a worthless remnant' of the colonial age and that the post was a refuge for politicians who have lost their foothold on the ground. The continued disputes between the Raj Bhavan and the government was heading for a governance crisis, he added.
