Landis+Gyr halves costs by moving Oracle workloads to Google Cloud

Landis+Gyr has optimised its total cost of ownership and operational scalability by migrating critical Oracle workloads to Google Cloud Platform using Tessell's Database-as-a-Service solution. Operating in over 30 countries, Landis+Gyr manages millions of smart meters for utility customers, aiming to support grid performance and energy efficiency. As global energy demand and the need for real-time energy grid intelligence increase, the company identified a requirement to shift from legacy on-premises systems to a more scalable, cloud-native infrastructure. The migration process involved moving complex Oracle workloads - most notably the Oracle Head End System (HES) and Meter Data Management (MDM) applications - previously running on a Windows platform. The legacy environment introduced high licensing expenses, performance limitations, and restricted scalability, prompting the need for change. Tessell and GCP Landis+Gyr collaborated with Tessell to execute a cross-platform migration from Windows to Linux in conjunction with adopting Google Cloud's infrastructure. Tessell's platform enabled a transition that the company states achieved real-time data ingestion with sub-second latency, over 99.99% application availability, a 50% reduction in infrastructure costs, and a 60% increase in labour efficiency for database administrators. Compliance with data residency requirements across global regions was also highlighted. "Tessell's ability to execute complex Oracle migrations with precision allowed us to unlock significant operational and financial value," said Martti Kontula, Head of OT & Data at Landis+Gyr. "Our smart metering applications now run with greater agility, enabling us to deliver better insights and services to our customers while setting the foundation for long-term growth." The project included a proof-of-concept phase on Google Cloud, which demonstrated that moving to a Linux-based system met the company's performance benchmarks. This encompassed the demands of real-time smart meter data ingestion and the required levels of system uptime and throughput at scale. Operational impact Landis+Gyr reports several outcomes resulting from the migration. Scalability has been enhanced through Google Cloud's elastic infrastructure, allowing for the ingestion and processing of data from millions of deployed smart meters and maintaining responsiveness during peak usage. The company has also experienced a reduction in licensing and support costs by shifting from Windows to Linux, and a decrease in maintenance overheads. Automation of essential operations such as patching, updates, and lifecycle management has enabled internal personnel to dedicate more time to innovation and analytics. Landis+Gyr stated that it is on schedule to retire its legacy data centres, and is adopting a cloud-first approach across its operations. Enhancing resilience Looking ahead, Landis+Gyr plans to extend its partnership with Tessell to improve high availability and disaster recovery capabilities. This includes deploying a multi-zone, multi-region high availability architecture on Google Cloud, automating cross-region disaster recovery with minimal data loss, and engaging in business continuity planning in line with industry standards. "With Tessell's robust cloud platform and GCP's global scale, Landis+Gyr is well-positioned to meet the rising demands of the energy sector while supporting its mission of creating a more sustainable and intelligent energy future," said Bakul Banthia, Co-Founder of Tessell. Landis+Gyr continues to focus on improving its cloud infrastructure to respond to the evolving requirements of energy utilities and the broader market. Follow us on: Share on:

Circumvent raises $6 million to advance proactive AI cloud security

Circumvent has secured $6 million in early-stage funding to advance the development and commercial rollout of its proactive cloud security platform. This investment has been led by Paladin Capital Group, an investor focused on cybersecurity and secure artificial intelligence, and will enable Circumvent to launch its multi-agent AI system designed to assist cloud and security teams with managing and resolving security alerts across complex infrastructures. Platform approach Circumvent's platform addresses the challenge faced by organisations overwhelmed by high volumes of alerts originating from multiple security tools in their cloud infrastructure and application environments. The system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to ingest, correlate, and enhance alerts from a broad set of cloud-native, open-source, and third-party sources. By connecting these alerts with up-to-date business context, Circumvent aims to streamline risk prioritisation and allow teams to focus on source-level remediation tasks that are most critical to their operations. Circumvent was founded by Michael Watts and Thomas Bui. Watts previously established Cloud Conformity, a former Paladin Capital Group portfolio company that was acquired by Trend Micro in 2019. Bui, now Chief Technology Officer at Circumvent, brings experience from the banking sector, government, and a previous tenure at Uber. The co-founders have worked together in the past, building technology products targeted at complex business challenges. Multi-Agent AI system At the core of Circumvent's solution is a Multi-Agent AI System. This is described as a coordinated network of intelligent agents responsible for managing prioritisation and remediation activities at large scale. These agents are designed to act autonomously, adapting to each customer's specific cloud environment and supporting what Circumvent terms a guided remediation experience. The company reports that it is currently partnering with several large enterprises across the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, particularly those with significant cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. "Security and cloud teams are under immense pressure to move fast without increasing risk," said Michael Watts, co-founder and CEO of Circumvent. "We're not just generating more alerts—we're building the intelligence layer that helps teams understand what to fix, why it's important, and how to take immediate action to resolve the root cause." Thomas Bui, co-founder and CTO, stated, "By aligning alerts with real-time business context, Circumvent ruthlessly prioritises risks, identifies root causes, and enables engineering teams to take precise, targeted remediation actions at the source. The platform is built to integrate seamlessly into existing DevSecOps workflows, improving security efficiency without slowing innovation." Funding allocation The funding from Paladin Capital Group will be used to accelerate product development and support early engagement with customers. Part of the investment will also fund the establishment of Circumvent's new commercial headquarters in San Francisco, while continuing to base its research and development activities in Australia. The San Francisco office is expected to underpin Circumvent's expansion into the United States and increased global outreach. "We're thrilled to be working again with Michael Watts and the exceptional founding team at Circumvent," said Tom Clute, Principal at Paladin Capital Group. "Our mission is to support entrepreneurs who are transforming cybersecurity through innovation from the ground up. Circumvent is addressing one of the most critical challenges in cloud security today: closing the gap between identifying risks and driving effective, scalable remediation." Company operations Circumvent reports that its solution is intended to automate the triage and prioritisation of alerts, minimising manual intervention and addressing alert fatigue among security operations staff. The platform aims to deliver remediation recommendations with human verification, allowing security teams to address risks more efficiently and at their source. With this funding, Circumvent and Paladin Capital Group are seeking to address what they describe as a significant shortfall in the current market: the ability for enterprises to not only identify risks in the cloud but also to remediate them effectively and at scale.

Ivo launches AI tools to transform contract analysis & insight

Ivo has announced the launch of two AI-native products designed to automate contract analysis and streamline the extraction of insights from legal agreements. Legal teams have traditionally depended on contract lifecycle management (CLM) tools to store and manage agreements. However, extracting meaningful data from these systems often involved the manual review of large volumes of documents, with significant time and resource investment required. The latest offering from Ivo consists of Repository and Assistant, both powered by the company's proprietary AI Repository Engine (AiRE). The tools are positioned to provide visibility into organisation-wide contract portfolios and allow users to submit plain language queries to gain immediate access to relevant contract information. Product features Repository enables the creation of dashboards with custom AI-populated columns, presenting key business and legal insights rapidly. According to Ivo, the platform's AI is capable of clustering related documents, such as amendments linked to master agreements, and can assess the extent to which specific agreements diverge from established standard templates. The Assistant product offers the capability for both legal and business teams to query tens of thousands of contracts using natural language, retrieving comprehensive answers regardless of the contract file's storage location. The underlying AI can respond to detailed questions, for example, identifying all customer contracts with specific data security requirements, by understanding how each contract aligns or deviates from pre-determined standard positions. Min-Kyu Jung, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ivo, commented on the current challenges experienced by legal teams using traditional CLMs. "CLMs were supposed to solve the problem of extracting true intelligence from contracts, but have overpromised and underdelivered. We're solving the knowledge problem. Legal teams don't need another static system of record. They need intelligence at their fingertips — contextual, instant, and deeply reliable." The new Ivo solutions are designed to integrate directly with widely used document management systems, including Google Drive and SharePoint, as well as on-premise solutions. The Assistant will also operate with Ivo's Microsoft Word add-in to provide negotiation recommendations based on insights from previous contracts. Market adoption and scope Following its Series A funding round earlier this year, Ivo has been utilised by over 200 legal teams, including those at Canva, Quora, and Eventbrite. The company reports these organisations have been able to reduce contract review time by up to 75% while maintaining accuracy. With the introduction of Repository and Assistant, Ivo identifies a move from contract review to a broader application it terms 'AI contract intelligence', stating its intention to make CLMs unnecessary without directly replacing them. The company emphasises that its platform is suitable for enterprise-scale deployments, handling extensive portfolios without manual metadata tagging or requiring bulk uploads. "What used to take hours of combing through contracts can now happen in a single sentence. This isn't just faster. It's foundationally smarter," Jung stated, detailing the impact of this approach on business operations. Ivo says the products have been deployed by early access customers in legal, procurement, sales, and operations sectors. The company claims that the technology enables contracts to be transformed from passive records into strategic assets capable of informing business decision-making across departmental boundaries. Industry shift The announcement positions Ivo within a broader industry transition, moving from software systems designed solely for record-keeping to those which support understanding and immediate action. The company cites increased contract complexity and volume as key drivers for the need for improved visibility, precision, and speed. According to Ivo, Repository and Assistant allow for every agreement to become instantly searchable, every risk to be visible, and every contract to serve as a strategic asset for the business. The company states it is working towards building the infrastructure required for this paradigm shift in contract management and analysis.
