Activist Mugilan acquitted of sedition charges in 2017 case

KARUR: Environment activist R S Mugilan, who has staged several protests including against the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi and the nuclear power plant at Kudankulam, was acquitted of sedition charges by the chief judicial magistrate court on Friday.
The case relates to a speech Mugilan made in April 2017 at a public meeting in Seethapatti Colony in Aravakurichi. In December 2017, a case was booked and Mugilan was arrested under Sections 124(A), 153(A)(1), and 505(1)(b) of IPC. He was granted bail in September 2018.
During the final hearing on Friday, the judge found no evidence against Mugilan and acquitted him of all charges. Speaking to reporters, Mugilan said, 'I was charged falsely for speaking about illegal sand mining in the Cauvery river, and the importance of caste and religious harmony. I am glad justice has been served.'
Mugilan has faced several cases. In 2019, he was arrested based on a sexual assault complaint lodged by a 32-year-old woman in Karur. He was granted bail by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court in November 2019.

He added, "Believing the convict's theory, the minor was rushed to a medical facility and underwent treatment in three different hospitals, and after eight days, she secretly wrote her ordeal on a paper, which somehow reached her father. Upon this, an FIR was lodged at Kankar Khera police station under relevant sections of IPC and Pocso Act in June 2023." Additional district govt counsel Manoj Gupta said, "The incident occurred on Sept 9, 2017, when the boy was in his school where the convict was appointed as judo coach. Mohd Qasim took the boy to the forest on the pretext of judo training, where he forcefully sodomised him. The boy narrated his ordeal to his family about the incident upon returning home. Subsequently, an FIR against the convict was registered at Katghar police station under the sections of sodomy and the Pocso Act. " He added, "The submitted medical examination report to the court confirmed the assault. Additionally, the statement of the survivor and the circumstantial evidence helped in nailing the accused." The chargesheet was submitted in court, and the judge expedited the trial. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court found Ali guilty and ordered his immediate custody. Cops, welfare orgs help free 2,000 cattle

Hyderabad: Over 2,000 cattle were rescued from the clutches of mafia in just the last two months from different districts of Telangana with combined efforts of Gau Gyan Foundation, Telangana Police and State Government, with more than 50 FIRs being registered. The cattle were put through harsh living conditions, rough handling, and often outright abuse and cruelty. They are routinely castrated, dehorned, and hot-iron branded without anaesthetics. Those transported to feedlots and slaughterhouses were often shocked with electric prods, beaten, kicked, dragged and deprived of food and water for long periods. Crammed in trucks during transport, their limbs get broken, they sustain multiple injuries and infections. Young calves were slaughtered in front of their mothers and kin. Telangana State Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act 1977 (Sections 3, 5, 6, 10, 11), PCA act 1960 (Sections 11, 38), Transport of Animals Rules 1978 (Section 56 A,B,C) and IPC 428 and 429 as also the rulings of Supreme Court and High Court of AP & Telangana – all point that the activities of the mafia were illegal and punishable under Indian Law. Ex-BDO held in two-decade-old foodgrain scam

Lucknow: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Sunday arrested former block development officer (BDO) Dayaram Vishwakarma in connection with the Ballia foodgrain scam that occurred between 2002 and 2005. Vishwakarma, who retired in 2022 as district development officer in Sultanpur and had been absconding for years, is accused of misappropriating over Rs 27 lakh in collusion with co-accused individuals by using forged documents and fraudulent practices during his tenure as BDO. Following directives from the director general of police (EOW), a dedicated team led by SP (EOW), Varanasi, was formed to trace and apprehend him. According to the EOW, forged muster rolls were prepared, and foodgrain meant for labourers was not distributed as mandated. A total of 13 people were found to be involved in the case. The accused was booked under multiple FIRs—Case No. 65B/2006 at Bansdih police station and Case No. 57B/2006 at Rewati police station—under IPC sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471, 120B, 34, among others, and Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
