Conservation group makes $60M land deal to end mining threat outside Okefenokee Swamp

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A conservation group said Friday it has reached a $60 million deal to buy land outside the Okefenokee Swamp from a mining company that environmentalists spent years battling over a proposed mine that opponents feared could irreparably damage an ecological treasure. The Conservation Fund said it will buy all 7,700 acres (31.16 square kilometers) that Alabama-based Twin Pines owns outside the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Georgia, halting the company's mining plans.

Conservation group makes $60M land deal to end mining threat outside Okefenokee Swamp

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A conservation group said Friday it has reached a $60 million deal to buy land outside the Okefenokee Swamp from a mining company that environmentalists spent years battling over a proposed mine that opponents feared could irreparably damage an ecological treasure. The Conservation Fund said it will buy all 7,700 acres (31.16 square kilometers) that Alabama-based Twin Pines owns outside the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Georgia, halting the company's mining plans. 'It's a big undertaking, but it was also an existential threat to the entire refuge,' said Stacy Funderburke, the Conservation Fund's vice president for the central Southeast. 'We've done larger deals for larger acres, but dollar-wise this is the largest deal we've ever done in Georgia.' A Twin Pines spokesman did not immediately respond to an email message seeking comment. Twin Pines of Birmingham, Alabama, had worked since 2019 to obtain permits to mine titanium dioxide, a pigment used to whiten products from paint to toothpaste, less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the southeastern boundary of the Okefenokee refuge near the Georgia-Florida line. The Okefenokee is the largest U.S. refuge east of the Mississippi River, covering nearly 630 square miles (1,630 square kilometers) in southeast Georgia. It is home to abundant alligators, stilt-legged wood storks and more than 400 other animal species. The mine appeared to be on the cusp of winning final approval early last year. Georgia regulators issued draft permits in February 2024 despite warnings from scientists that mining near the Okefenokee's bowl-like rim could damage its ability to hold water and increase the frequency of withering droughts. Twin Pines insisted it could mine without damaging the swamp. Regulators with the Georgia Department of Environmental Protection agreed, concluding last year that mining should have a 'minimal impact' on the refuge. The agency revealed recently that work on final permits had stalled because Twin Pines had yet to submit a surety bond or equivalent financial assurance to show that it had $2 million set aside for future restoration of the mining site. It said the company was informed of the requirement 16 months ago.

Expert Guide to Residential Plastering by Sheffield Specialists

Finding skilled plasterers for your home is no easy task, especially when it comes to ensuring high-quality and long-lasting results. That's why turning to local experts, like Plasterers Sheffield, can make all the difference. Whether you're renovating a single room or building from scratch, professional plastering is a critical step to achieving smooth, durable walls and ceilings. This expert guide will explore everything you need to know about residential plastering. From the advantages of hiring local specialists to understanding the services they provide, we've got you covered. Many homeowners underestimate the impact of well-executed plastering until they face issues like cracks, uneven finishes, or poor insulation. Plastering is more than just aesthetic; it plays a crucial role in your home's structure and comfort. Professionally plastered walls and ceilings set the stage for any interior design. A smooth and flawless surface makes painting or wallpapering easier while ensuring the final result looks polished and high-end. Expert plasterers use quality materials and techniques to create a finish that stands the test of time. Amateur plastering, on the other hand, may lead to cracks, flaking, or moisture damage that requires costly repairs later. Well-applied plaster helps insulate your home by minimizing air leaks and maintaining consistent wall thickness. With rising energy costs, every little bit counts. Choosing local professionals for your plastering needs comes with a set of unique benefits tailored to Sheffield homeowners. Plasterers in Sheffield are likely accustomed to the unique architectural styles and building materials common in the area. Whether you live in a traditional stone home or a modern build, they know exactly how to approach the job. Local plasterers are just around the corner, meaning quicker site visits and faster project turnaround. This can be especially helpful during emergencies, like unexpected cracks or leaks. Hiring Sheffield-based plasterers contributes to the city's economy and helps sustain small businesses in the area. Reputable plasterers in Sheffield offer a wide range of services to meet your home improvement needs. Here's what you can typically expect: Skimming involves applying a thin layer of plaster over an existing surface to create a smooth and flawless finish. It's ideal for minor wall repairs or as a final touch before painting. This is the process of attaching plasterboard to surfaces like walls or ceilings. It's a cost-effective and time-saving alternative to traditional wet plastering, especially in new builds. For a touch of elegance, specialists can install coving, ceiling roses, or other decorative plasterwork to elevate your home's interior. If your walls or ceilings have small cracks or holes, a professional can perform seamless repairs that blend perfectly with the surrounding plaster. This service is crucial for areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms or basements. It involves using specialized plasters designed to resist dampness and mold. With so many options available, it can be challenging to select the best plasterer for your project. Here are some practical tips to guide your decision-making process: Ensure the plasterers have the qualification and experience needed for your job. It's worth asking for references or inspecting photos of their previous work. Online reviews are a treasure trove of information. Look for plasterers in Sheffield with consistently high ratings and positive feedback. Gather quotes from at least three plasterers to compare costs, services, and timelines. This will give you a good sense of the market rate and prevent you from overpaying. A reputable plasterer should be transparent about the materials they use and their application methods. Modern techniques can make a big difference in the final quality. Verify that the plasterer has adequate insurance to cover any damages or mishaps during the project. This protects both parties and provides peace of mind. Sheffield has a rich heritage of skilled tradespeople, and its plasterers are no exception. Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques, Plasterers Sheffield deliver results that are both functional and visually stunning. Whether working on a Victorian townhouse or a contemporary flat, they tailor their services to meet the unique needs of the property and its owners. Investing in professional residential plastering is one of the most significant steps you can take to enhance your home's value and appearance. By hiring Plasterers Sheffield, you'll not only receive expert workmanship but also enjoy the confidence of supporting trusted local specialists. Take the time to find the right plastering service that aligns with your needs and budget. A perfectly plastered home is just a call away! TIME BUSINESS NEWS
