Scottie Scheffler was 'stressed' and 'rattled' by police 'running around green'

Daily Mirror8 hours ago

Scottie Scheffler won the Travelers Championship last year through a tense play-off with Tom Kim, but his victory wasn't without its troubles as the tournament drew to a close
Scottie Scheffler found himself under pressure during the final round of last year's Travelers Championship when protestors invaded the 18th green. The world No. 1 was in a make or break situation as he prepared his putt on the final hole of TPC River Highlands, just as climate activists from Extinction Rebellion staged a protest.
One demonstrator taunted police with a flare before being tackled to the ground amid boos from the crowd, while several others wearing white t-shirts emblazoned with 'No golf on a dead planet' were quickly apprehended. In total, six individuals were arrested and charged with first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree criminal trespass and breach of peace.

The disruption, which lasted a mere five minutes, occurred as Scheffler was preparing for a tournament-defining putt - a birdie would have secured him an outright victory on the Sunday. However, he ultimately missed the shot and had to settle for par, while Tom Kim managed to sink his own birdie to match Scheffler's 22-under-par lead and force a playoff.

During the replay, Scheffler comfortably made par to Kim's bogey to win the tournament. However, he did confess that the antics of protestors had left him rattled on the 18th green.
Reflecting on the unsettling scenes, he said: "When something like that happens, you don't really know what's happening, so it can kind of rattle you a little bit, because there's people running around the green and there's police officers running around and you don't know if they're peaceful, so it can be a bit stressful."
Meanwhile, fellow golfer Akshay Bhatia, who faced the tension alongside Scheffler in the final group, revealed the ordeal left him shaken. He said: "I was scared for my life.
"I didn't even really know what was happening. All of a sudden, four, five people come out running on the green. It was kind of weird. But thankfully the cops were there and kept us safe."
Scheffler came into this year's Travelers Championship aiming to redeem himself following a lacklustre US Open showing at Oakmont Country Club. Despite high expectations, the 28-year-old could only muster a shared seventh-place finish with Jon Rahm and Sam Burns, closing out the major with a four-over total.

The Pennsylvania course's sprawling fairways and gigantic greens threw a spanner in the works for many top golfers, as juggernauts Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry and Justin Thomas notably missed Friday's cut. JJ Spaun rose above adversity, securing his first major win on Sunday with a one-under total score, evidencing just how tough the task at hand was.
Speaking about his win, Spaun explained: "I never thought I would be here holding this trophy. I've always had aspirations and dreams but a few months ago I didn't know what my ceiling was and how good I could be, but I am just proud.
"I have been resilient in my career and pushed through a lot of things and tried to be the best golfer I could be. I was happy to display that today at Oakmont.
"It was a dream weekend scenario on Father's Day, to have my two kids here is awesome and a cherry on top of a wonderful weekend."

The tennis ace faces Czech opponent Jiri Lehecka in West Kensington today with a prize pot of £350,773 up for grabs for the winner. ‌ Alcaraz is fresh from beating Jannik Sinner in a thrilling French Open final at Roland Garros where he fought back from an almost impossible position to beat the Italian in the latest instalment of their rivalry. ‌ Novak Djokovic views both players as beneficial to the sport, saying: "They're definitely great for tennis, both of them. I think their rivalry is something that our sport needs, no doubt. "The way they are playing and approaching tennis life, I think they are going to have very successful careers in the next years." Alcaraz, with his status as a two-time Wimbledon champion and a reported net worth of £35.6million, had high praise for his opponent Sinner, saying: "He's the best tennis player right now. I mean, he's destroying every opponent." His relationships have notably come into focus amid his rising profile in the world of tennis. After securing his 17th win in succession, Alcaraz beamed: "I saw on social media she came up to watch my match. I'm just glad. "I mean, I was focused on the match. I didn't see her afterwards. I am just glad that she came to support me, to watch my match. Yeah, I think it was great having her in the stands." ‌ Alcaraz expressed his enthusiasm to support her at a match before the US Open, saying: "It depends on the schedule, obviously. I have practices. I have matches. "Yeah, I would love to, yeah, if I have time, if I'm at the club or I don't have anything else to do, yeah, I would love to come and watch her. I'm watching her matches from the TV every time that I can. So watching her for real could be fun." Alcaraz and Raducanu will be paired with each other at the US Open later this year. ‌ Alcaraz said of their partnership: "I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be great. It was an amazing idea for the tournament. I was thinking that I couldn't play better if it wasn't with Emma. "I just asked Emma if she wants to play doubles with me. Yeah, I made that special request. She took a while to respond. Not that much, not that much! But obviously she had to ask, and she had to think a little bit. But it wasn't a minute! "I have known Emma for a really long time. I have a really good relationship with her. We are gonna enjoy it for sure. We will try to win. But obviously it's going to be really, really fun." ‌ Alcaraz previously dated within the tennis circle, and was linked with fellow Spanish player Maria Gonzalez Gimenez of Murcia Tennis Club, known for participating in Spanish Masters and ATP Challenger tournaments. A picture capturing an intimate moment between them was even shared on his Instagram story, as highlighted by Tennis Tonic. However, the Spanish prodigy has confirmed he is currently single. ‌ Addressing questions about his personal life, he affirmed: "No, I am single. I am looking for someone." Tommy Fleetwood ready to shed ‘$25m loser' tag and stick it back to the Americans

Is Tommy Fleetwood at last to shed 'The $25 million Loser' tag cruelly bestowed by cynical American fans? Certainly, the Englishman has never enjoyed such an advantage going into the final round of a PGA Tour tournament as he has at the Travelers Championship. Fleetwood is on 15-under, three shots clear of Keegan Bradley and Russell Henley after a brilliant third-round 63 at TPC River Highlands at Connecticut. It is fair to say the Signature Event - complete with its $3.6 million (£2.7 million) winning cheque - is his to lose. He has not missed a fairway in 21 holes and his putter is obliging as well, as evidenced by the 66-footer he holed for a birdie on the par-three fifth. Indeed with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler on eight behind after a two-over 72 - he started Saturday sharing the lead with Fleetwood - and Rory McIlroy also on seven-under following a 68, the extremely popular 34-year-old may not get a better chance of ending his drought on US soil. And, of course, silencing his Uncle Sam doubters. Fleetwood will pass the $30m mark in PGA Tour earnings even if he does not prevail. Nobody has banked so much on the circuit without lifting silverware. In 149 events he has racked up five runners-up placings and 41 top 10s - the latter the most of any player without a win on the Tour since 1983. It would be overdue and ecstatically welcomed if only for the supporters around the world who have seen the Merseysider triumph seven times on the DP World Tour and establish himself as a European Ryder Cup stalwart. For his part, Fleetwood has always taken the Stateside ribbing in good-natured fashion and continued to do so when quizzed about his void after a sublime afternoon that featured no bogeys, five birdies and his third eagle in his last two rounds. 'I don't know, I'm on top of a lot of stats charts for players that haven't won on the PGA Tour - and to be a No 1 at something is always nice,' he replied when asked if he wants to remove the Starred-and-Striped monkey off his back. 'Yeah, of course I would love to win on the PGA Tour. I think it's an element of your career that everybody wants, and I of course want it. This year, I've not really been in contention. So this is like my first real chance, so I'm really excited about it.' As the world No 6, Henley is probably the biggest threat to Fleetwood, standing at 17th in the rankings, although Bradley will likely receive the backing of the home support. Bradley is the US Ryder Cup captain for this year's showdown in New York and if he comes through on Sunday he will put himself into contention to make his own side. That would present him and Team USA with a huge headache, just three months before the match. There has not been a player-captain in the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer 62 years ago.

The astonishing Tommy Fleetwood numbers behind charge for PGA Tour first

English star aims to tick-off another magic milestone in sensational career Outstanding Tommy Fleetwood stands on the brink of ending his PGA Tour drought by winning at the Travelers Championship. But the Englishman's outstanding career figures behind the Connecticut charge mean he's amongst the golfing elite win or lose on Sunday evening. ‌ Aged just 34, Fleetwood has made 158 career PGA Tour starts since he started out and made his professional debut at the 2010 Czech Open on the DP World Tour. ‌ During that period, the Southport star has notched a highest-ever figure of 41 Top-10 finishes, which is the biggest of any player without a PGA Tour in the modern era since 1983 and seven more than the next name on the list, Brett Quigley, Away from the States, Fleetwood has amassed seven victories on the DP World Tour with his first coming in 2013 when he defeated Stephen Gallacher and Ricardo Gonzalez in a play-off at the 2013 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. Since then, he has won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in 2017 and 2018, the French Open in 2017, the Nedbank Challenge in in 2019 and 2022 and the Dubai Invitational last year. Fleetwood has also represented Europe three times in the Ryder Cup matches against the United States and won on two of those occasions. In 2018 in Paris, his partnership with Francesco Molinari was key to the success of Thomas Bjorn's side and, as well as teaming-up with Rory McIlroy for points in Rome in 2023, he had the honour of securing the winning point in the Singles against Rickie Fowler at Marco Simeone Golf Club. ‌ Fleetwood also has the distinction of positing a top-five finish in each of the game's four Major championships and came runner-up to Brooks Koepka at the US Open in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills and also at The Open Championship the following year at Royal Portrush behind Shane Lowry. He can now add a triumph on the PGA Tour to his magnificent CV and is relishing the opportunity to take that next step. He said: 'I'm on top of a lot of stat lines for people that haven't won on the PGA Tour, so to always to be a No.1 at something is always nice!. Yeah, of course I would love to win on the PGA Tour. I think it's like an element of your career that everybody wants and I of course want it. 'It's easy to put pressure on yourself and, the longer things go on, the more people talk about it, of course they do. "But there's also things that I'm very proud about as well, like my consistency, where I stand [in] FedExCups and world rankings and things like that. So there's a lot to be happy about. "But I'm not going to, be silly and say I don't care about it. Of course I want to win and, hopefully, it will happen sooner rather than later.'
