RIP: Tributes pour in for Phumlani Msibi
Phumlani Msibi is undoubtedly one of the most legendary sports presenters this country has ever produced, with the popular figure having become a household name for so many through his colourful football and boxing commentary and analysis.
Sadly, the news broke on Friday night that the broadcaster had passed away after a short illness.
He was 57.
Msibi was widely known as one of the faces and voices of sport on SuperSport over the better part of the last two decades, working across football, boxing and even horse racing.
Before joining SuperSport, Msibi honed his broadcast skills with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha paid tribute to Msibi: 'Msibi was one of the most beloved sports commentators SuperSport has ever had. He had a reputation as an outstanding professional, well-respected by his peers and colleagues and a respected family man.
'On behalf of SuperSport and the MultiChoice family, we'd like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Msibi family following this great loss. Msibi's loss will be felt not just by the broadcaster and football fraternity but by the whole sporting community at large. We are gravely saddened by his passing.'

Kaizer Chiefs close to signing three in-demand free agents!
Kaizer Chiefs have the opportunity to pick up some serious muscle – for free. However, that doesn't mean they will. Asanele Velebayi and former Mamelodi Sundowns player Sipho Mbule, both out of contract, have been offered to AmaKhosi by their respective agents, but the club has yet to make a decision, showcasing their hesitation. Either player would presumably be a great addition for Kaizer Chiefs, but perhaps they have other players in mind and could see these two players as insurance if they fall short of other targets. AmaZulu FC star Rowan Human is another free agent who has been offered to the Glamour Boys. The 24-year-old recently decided not to extend his contract with uSuthu, making him available from July 1. 'AmaZulu FC midfielder Rowan Human has been offered to Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs by his representatives as he is set to leave the club on a free transfer. Human will leave Usuthu at the end of June after his contract expires after the 24-year-old failed to reach an agreement with the club on a new contract,' a source revealed. 'Human has been offered to both Soweto giants by his representatives and it could only be a matter of time before he gets snapped up as he will be a free agent and rediscovered his old form.' Craven Week opening round fixtures confirmed
The opening round fixtures for this year's U18 Craven Week to be hosted by Middelburg High School in Mpumalanga have been announced. This year will be the 60th edition of the tournament – and the third time it will be hosted by Middelburg. The two previous editions took place in 1978 and 2014. Western Province are the defending champions and are currently on a 15-match win streak at Craven Week. The Cape side's 37-24 win over Free State in last year's main match was their fifth consecutive victory in the unofficial 'final'. It would take a brave man to bet against Western Province contesting this year's final such has been the dominance of the Cape schools this season. Western Province have a number of players returning from last year's side which bodes well for their chances. Somewhat surprisingly, however, considering their dominance in 2025 and their place atop the 'unofficial' schoolboy rankings, Paarl Gimnasium only have two members of the 23-player Western Province team Paarl Boys' High and Rondebosch Boys' High each contribute five players, while four come from Wynberg Boys' High. Along with Paarl Gimnsium, Boland Landbou, Stellenberg and Paul Roos all have two players, while the final member of the team, loose forward Briint Davids, hails from Milnerton. Western Province will begin their campaign against neighbours Boland in the main match on Day 2. This year's U18 Craven Week will run from 7 to 12 July. Pumas vs Limpopo Western Province XV vs Griffons Free State vs SWD Bulls vs Lions Leopards vs Valke Border vs Griquas Sharks vs Eastern Province Western Province vs Boland Kick-off times and field venues will be announced in due course. NOTE: Fixtures for the remainder of the tournament will be confirmed following each day's play. South African 1 500m record falls
South Africa's Tshepo Tshite delivered a stunning performance at the Diamond League meeting in Paris on Friday night, breaking the long-standing national 1 500m record in a blistering race that featured some of the world's fastest middle-distance athletes. Tshite, 28, crossed the line in 3:31.35, shaving more than half a second off the previous South African record of 3:31.93 set by Johan Cronje in 2013. It was Tshite's first national outdoor record, adding to his existing South African indoors records in both the 1 500m (3:35.06) and the mile (3:54.10). Fastest in recent history While Tshepo Tshite finished ninth in a stacked field, the race was one of the fastest in recent history. France's Azeddine Habz took the win in 3:27.49, setting the fastest time in the world this year and dragging five other runners under the 3:30 barrier. Athletics South Africa (ASA) president James Moloi praised Tshite's achievement while also calling for broader performance improvement across the national team ahead of major competitions, including the upcoming World Championships in Japan this September. 'As we congratulate Tshite for achieving his feat of breaking a record, we also take the opportunity to encourage all athletes to drastically improve their performances in order to reach podium positions,' said Moloi. 'We don't take anything away from him – for a national record is always an achievement to be celebrated. 'It becomes a new benchmark for others. 'We therefore congratulate Tshite, his coach, and all of his support staff.' Meanwhile, in the men's 5 000m event, fellow South African Adriaan Wildschutt finished 14th in 13:28.67, well behind Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, who stormed to victory in a world-class 12:47.84. The next leg of the Diamond League series will take place in Eugene, Oregon in the United States on Saturday, 5 July. NOTE: All South African records are subject to official ratification.
