SA's power-hitter Heinrich Klaasen announces retirement from international cricket
New Delhi [India] June 2 (ANI): South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday. The wicketkeeper-batter, who made his debut in 2018, took to social media to announce his retirement.
Klaasen posted on his Instagram, 'It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what's best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision, but also one that I have absolute peace with.'

Klaasen, who played in 122 international matches for the Proteas, expressed gratitude towards his coaches during his cricketing journey.
'I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life. Playing for the Proteas gave me the opportunity to meet great people that changed my life, and to those people I can't say thank you enough,' he said.
'My road to wearing the Proteas shirt was different than most, and there were certain coaches in my career that kept believing in me - to them I will always be grateful.'
'To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career.'
'I will always be a big Proteas supporter and would like to thank everyone who supported me and my teammates during my career,' he added.
Klaasen's iconic whip-pull off the spinners made him a dangerous prospect across the formats for South Africa. He was a member of the South Africa side that featured in the recent ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, and the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025.
He scored 2141 runs with a highest score of 174 in his 60 ODIs at an average of 43.69. In the T20Is, he scored 1000 runs with a highest score of 81 and a strike rate of 141.84. While he smashed four centuries and 11 fifties in ODIs, Klaasen had five T20I half-centuries against his name.
His power-hitting was on full display during a blistering career-best 174 against Australia at his home ground, SuperSport Park, in 2023 - the second highest score ever recorded by a number five.
Klaasen had earlier retired from Tests in January 2024, having featured in four games in the longest format. (ANI)

The Indian Premier League (IPL) door closed.A SIMPLE PLAN: KEEP BATTINGOne day, he showed up at Vijay's cricket academy on the outskirts of Bengaluru, two hours away in choked traffic. He had no matches to play, no team to represent. Just a stubborn flicker of belief.'This was in 2022,' his coach recalls. 'He wasn't part of the state team. He was very upset and had no cricket to play. One day, he came to the just said, 'Sir, I don't know why, but I want to do something.''Vijay Madyalkar didn't offer platitudes. Just a plan.'I told him, 'You're a batsman. Let's just focus on batting. You don't have to worry about anything. Your mindset is brilliant. Your fitness is excellent. You've already scored a triple hundred in a Test—what can I teach you?' So we decided to refine his skills and keep hitting followed was five months of quiet obsession.'We kept it simple—basic cricket. Cover drives, cut shots, same skills repeated. You won't believe it—he used to play 600 balls every alternate day. We literally counted them. He never took a single ball lightly. Even if he missed one, he'd feel bad. His focus was extraordinary. There was zero negativity, zero excuses.'ONE MORE CHANCEThe same year, Karun posted a tweet that would gain momentum later: 'Dear cricket, give me one more chance.' At the time, it barely made a ripple. But in 2024, when he began dominating the domestic circuit again, the tweet went made no fuss. He simply embraced whatever came his way—matches in the Karnataka Premier League, domestic games under grey English skies, grinding spells for Vidarbha on dry, cracked dust bowls back being sidelined by Karnataka, he shifted base to Vidarbha with quiet determination. In 2023 and 2024, he took his game to England—first with a local club, then with Northamptonshire in the County Championship. There too, he dug deep: 249 runs in three matches in 2023, followed by 487 in seven the next year, including a stoic double the 2024–25 season, Karun was relentless. He topped the Vijay Hazare Trophy charts with 779 runs at an astonishing average of 389.50. He was Vidarbha's leading scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. And in the Ranji Trophy, he finished as the fourth-highest run-getter in the country, his four centuries instrumental in Vidarbha's title-winning through it all, he kept expanding his range, his hunger, his belief. Sourav Ganguly gives honest opinion on Gautam Gambhir's role as India head coach, says 'He started off a little slow...'
Gautam Gambhir. New Delhi: India former captain Sourav Ganguly has categorically ruled out entering politics but has stated that he would be open to coach the Indian national team. Ganguly, will turn 53 this July, was the Team Director of Delhi Capitals between 2018-19 and 2022-24. I never really thought about it because I got into different roles,' Ganguly told PTI in a free-wheeling podcast interview when asked about his willingness towards coaching the Indian team. 'I finished (competitive cricket) in 2013 and then became Board (BCCI) President.' When suggested that he could have contributed more by becoming India coach, Ganguly said: 'We'll see what the future holds. I'm just 50 (53), so let's see what happens. I'm open to it. We'll see where it goes,' However, Ganguly was full of praise on the current head coach Gautam Gambhir of whom he feels has picked up pace in the position since India won the Champions Trophy earlier this year in Dubai. 'Gautam (Gambhir) is doing a good job. He started off a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand, but he picked up with the Champions Trophy. This is going to be a big series (vs England),' Ganguly said. On the question of Gambhir as a strategist, Ganguly praised the zeal in the lefty and how blatantly he is confident to give his opinion. 'I haven't seen him from very close in this role, but I know he is very passionate. I haven't observed his strategies closely because I haven't worked with him as a coach. 'He's very straightforward, he sees things clearly, and he's very open about what he feels, about the team, players, people, everything. From the outside, you can tell he's a very transparent person – what you see is what you get. 'I've played with him. He was a great guy with a lot of respect for me and the senior players. Even now, I can see he is extremely passionate about his job.' Ganguly also feels that with just a year into the job, Gambhir should be allowed time to grow as a coach and learn with passage of time. 'I wish him all the best. He's just a year into the job, and this will be an important (England) tour. He struggled a bit in Australia, but just like everyone else, he'll learn, he'll grow, and he'll become better.'
