1. Keep it long

For some, a perfect lawn is always well-trimmed and consistently kept short. Unfortunately, while this may look nice, it can be a detriment to the overall life of your grass.
During the hottest days of summer when your yard is competing with sweltering heat, blazing sun, and less rain, it's best to keep the grass around 4 inches high after a cut. That may seem long, but taller grass retains more water and has longer, healthier roots. So, you'll have to go to the golf course to see that short grass during the summer months if you want your lawn to thrive year-round.
1. Wait until the grass is dry

It may seem obvious during the summer when it reaches unbearable temps during the day to try and get started mowing early in the cool morning hours. But if there's still dew on the ground, you can lose time and damage your lawn. This is due to the high likelihood that wet grass will clump up in the discharge chute (that flappy thing on the side), requiring you to stop and remove the clog. Plus, your mower tires won't get great traction either and could put tracks in your yard.
Instead, wait until later in the morning when the dew dries, or mow the lawn late in the day before the evening dew. Also, time your sprinklers to start up in the late evening or at night so there isn't extra moisture on the grass when you mow. Here are some more watering tips for your lawn.
3. Go slower

Short on time or just want to get the chore over faster? Then going fast makes the most sense, right? But while it's tempting to go fast while mowing, it can actually create more work for you. By not taking your time and letting the mower do its job properly, there's a good chance it will leave some areas uncut and give the lawn an uneven, sloppy look. This means you'll have to take more time to re-mow it to make the lawn look correct.
Instead, take the path of the turtle -- slow and steady. A slower, mid-speed mowing session is faster and better for your lawn than zooming around the grass and ultimately needing to re-mow it later. Also, remember that the choke needs to be lower for slower speeds to run properly.
4. Be consistent

Mowing randomly across your lawn can take up more time and lead to an uneven cut. Follow a pattern instead, using this technique:
Start on the edge of your lawn with the discharge chute pointing toward your lawn
Mow around the perimeter of your lawn
When you get to your starting point, make a U-turn so the discharge chute is facing the strip you just cut
Keep mowing around the perimeter, making sure the discharge chute is pointed toward where you just mowed.
In the end, your lawn will end up with a nice pattern and the discharge chute won't clog.

So if one match is rescheduled for later in the day, presumably the corresponding other match in the group would also need to be. Of course, temperature is only part of the story. The heat index and WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) use additional factors such as relative humidity and sun intensity to measure how adverse conditions are. But were these MLS fixtures, it appears likely they would be rescheduled to night kickoffs. According to information from the league's website published in 2016, matches will go into a delay if and when the WBGT rise above 92.3. Given that all of these kickoffs occur before sundown – and given that in the Eastern United States, heat and humidity go together – it's very likely conditions will exceed that threshold at least at some of these scheduled fixtures. Looking forward, there may be even more potential for heat to have extreme impact on the knockout phase. Of the 15 scheduled single-elimination matches, 11 are scheduled to kick off at 4 pm ET or earlier in outdoor conditions. Temperatures aren't expected to be quite as hot into early July as they are the first few days of the coming week, but summer forecasts in particular are turbulent, and another wave of extreme heat before the competition ends wouldn't be all that surprising.

Fire danger grows as heat continues across Colorado, cooler weather ahead

The first official weekend of summer is here, and it's been a hot one. Denver tied the record high of 99° on Friday and came just one degree shy of tying another record on Saturday. Sunday will bring more of the same, with high temperatures climbing into the low to mid-90s across much of the eastern plains. In the high country, highs will range from the 70s to 80s. The big change on Sunday is an increase in fire weather concerns. CBS Fire weather conditions will expand eastward to include much of the I-25 corridor. Elevated fire danger is expected, with wind gusts reaching 30 to 45 mph—a key ingredient for rapid fire growth. Relief from the heat is on the way. A cold front arrives Sunday night into Monday, bringing temperatures down into the upper 70s and low 80s to start the work week. Daily chances for showers and thunderstorms also return.

Thousands lose power around West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thousands of customers around West Michigan lost power Saturday afternoon. The Consumers Energy Power map showed that there were around 7,000 outages across Allegan County, mostly concentrated in the Saugatuck and Douglas area, though service had been restored to most by around 6:30 p.m. Farther north along the lakeshore in Muskegon County, there were hundreds of people without power in the Fruitland Township and White Lake area. There are also pockets of outages around Kent County, including one near downtown that affected about 1,500 customers. As of 7 p.m., Kent County had more than 1,000 customers without power. Consumers Energy told News 8 that high winds and storms from Saturday morning were contributing factors to the outages. It said it had 200 crews working on restoration across the state.
