Penn State head coach James Franklin wants college football transfer portal window moved
Anyone who has followed college football over the past few years knows the sport's calendar is completely broken. Perhaps the biggest issue of all is the winter transfer portal window, which begins prior to the end of the previous season's playoff and bowl games. This often puts players in the unenviable position of having to choose between finishing the season out with their current team or entering the portal with enough time to find a new home before the spring semester starts.
This week, a notable Big Ten head coach spoke up on the issue. In a recent appearance on The Triple Option, a college football podcast hosted by Fox Sports's Rob Stone, Urban Meyer, and Mark Ingram II, Penn State head coach James Franklin advocated for moving college football's transfer portal window until after the postseason ends.
'We're having these conversations during the playoffs,' Franklin said. 'I'm trying to retain my team during the playoffs. That's the challenge. We're trying to get rid of this so you don't have the transfer portal open during the playoffs. We should be totally focused on trying to win a championship and instead, I'm having conversations to try to keep the team together.'

USC Makes Juju Watkins Announcement on Friday
USC Makes Juju Watkins Announcement on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The USC Trojans women's basketball team had a memorable 2024-25 season, finishing 31-4 overall and going 16-1 in their first year of Big Ten play under head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. Advertisement USC reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament before falling to eventual national champion UConn. The Trojans ended the year ranked fifth in the final Associated Press poll. Despite the success, the season ended with a sense of what might have been. The team's top player, Juju Watkins, suffered a torn ACL in the second round of the tournament, cutting her sophomore campaign short. USC never got a shot at UConn at full strength. Watkins still finished as the fourth-leading scorer in the country. Since the season ended, the Trojans have shared some uplifting news. On Friday, USC announced that Watkins was one of three players named to the university's Spring 2025 Dean's List: "Congrats to Malia, JuJu & Laura on being named to the Spring 2025 Dean's List!" Watkins was recognized along with teammates Malia Samuels and Laura Williams for their academic achievements. According to the university, the Dean's List honors undergraduates who earn a high GPA (usually 3.5 or above) while enrolled full-time with at least 12 credits. Advertisement Watkins added to her list of accomplishments with a trophy-filled season. She won the 2025 John R. Wooden Award, the Dawn Staley Award, and was named both the Associated Press and Naismith College Player of the Year. She averaged 23.9 points per game over 33 contests. South California Trojans guard JuJu Watkins (12) © Stephanie Amador Blondet-Imagn Images Her freshman season was even more explosive. She led the nation with 27.1 points per game and pulled down 7.3 rebounds over 34 games. Watkins is represented by Klutch Sports Group and has a major NIL deal with Nike, along with several other endorsements, making her one of the highest-earning players in women's college basketball. As USC looks ahead to next season, Watkins' recovery will be a major storyline. But her academic and athletic excellence continues to set the standard for the program. Cal Raleigh Ties, Breaks Bench's Record For Catcher Homers Before All-Star Break
Mariners' catcher Cal Raleigh is having a truly great season. The switch-hitting slugger went deep twice against the Cubs on Friday at Wrigley Field, for home runs 28 and 29 of the 2025 season, allowing him to tie and then pass Hall of Famer Johnny Bench's record for homers by a catcher before the All-Star break. The first blast came in the top of the first inning, a solo shot with two outs to put the Mariners up 1-0. That tied Bench's mark, set in 1970 in what would be the first of two MVP-winning seasons for the Reds' star. It took Bench 87 games to go deep 28 times, but Raleigh managed the feat in his 73rd game of the season. And it took just a few innings more for Big Dumper to set a new benchmark with his 29th dinger of the year. That's not all, however. Raleigh came into Friday's game as MLB's home run leader at any position: having 29 puts him three up on Aaron Judge, four up on Shohei Ohtani, and six ahead of Kyle Schwarber. That he hit two also added to another chase, which is that of the most multi-homer games in a single season by a catcher. Per MLB's Sarah Langs , Raleigh now has six of them in 2025, tying him with Mike Piazza's 1995 with the Dodgers for the second-most all-time, behind only Javy Lopez's 2003 with the Braves, when he went yard multiple times per game on eight occasions. If Raleigh makes it to 30 homers, it will be the third 30-homer season of his career, which would be the fourth-most ever by any primary catcher, behind Mike Piazza (nine times), Bench (four times) and Roy Campanella (also four). Raleigh is 28 years old, and in his fourth full season in the majors — it's not difficult to imagine him, conservatively, ending up in second place on that list. Longevity is rarely the name of the game behind the plate, however, which is one reason why Piazza's career was as special as it was — he's the all-time leader in home runs as a catcher with 399, with 427 long balls in all. Prognosticating beyond the next few years with a catcher is tricky, at best. For now, however, Raleigh has already made history as a backstop, and has a few weeks' worth of games left to pad that total, too. The next mark in sight, beyond the multi-homer one? Salvador Perez's single-season home run record for catchers of 48, set in 2021. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
