‘Paper Flowers' by Tim O'Brien and Jan Fabricius Review: Romance and Reflections
In a career of over 50 years as a music maker, Tim O'Brien has won recognition, praise and awards in folk music, bluegrass, country and roots rock as a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter. He was a founder of the progressive bluegrass band Hot Rize in the 1970s, playing fiddle and mandolin, and of the comical honky-tonk and Western-swing offshoot Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers. He won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album for the Irish-music-saluting 'Fiddler's Green,' and shared in the 2014 Best Bluegrass Album Grammy as a member of the Flatt & Scruggs-saluting Earls of Leicester. His 2017 album, 'Where the River Meets the Road,' celebrated the music of his native West Virginia; the state's Music Hall of Fame had inducted him by 2013. His songs have been recorded by everyone from Garth Brooks to Alison Krauss, and he's also toured and recorded solo and in folk duets with his sister, Mollie, and with Darrell Scott. For the past decade, he's been performing live with his wife, singer and mandolinist Jan Fabricius, and written songs with her, but they'd not gotten around to recording together until now, with their charming collaborative album 'Paper Flowers' (Howdy Skies, June 6).

Craig David on 7 Days, selling mixtapes, and his love of performing in Southampton
Craig David has a notoriously busy week, but luckily made time to talk to the Echo about his homecoming show this weekend. The Southampton local who shot to fame overnight in the early 2000s has long graced the RnB scene. He consistently champions is home city too, previously backing the bid for Southampton to be UK City of Culture and praising the pool of local musical talent. The 44-year-old singer, songwriter and DJ said he feels a 'flood of nostalgia' every time he reaches the roundabout at the top of The Avenue on approach to Southampton. 'The feeling of being home just hits every single time…being able to wrap that all up and bring it to the stage is important', he said. 'Specifically in Southampton, some of my tunes and songs mean a lot to people if I play them, for example my first song with Artful Dodger, that would mean a lot. 'People will say 'I remember when he did it on the mixtape and used to sell it at the barbers'. 'I am very excited and I never take the big hug and the love I get every time I come back to Southampton for granted.' David will be taking to the Summer Sessions stage on Guildhall Square on Saturday night, a big event that is proving popular year on year. He described the music industry as very 'London centric' in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He added: 'Growing up in Southampton I had the time and space to nurture my sound. 'We were on the pulse in being so close to London, which is why I think the music scene growing in Southampton was so poignant as it opened up the floodgates for musicians in other cities. 'The scene now in Southampton is thriving.' Speaking on his headliner gig on Saturday night, David said he is 'adamant' that he always wants to bring his classic songs to the stage, including 7 Days, the same way they were recorded. 'As it will be a TS5 DJ set, it will give me the freedom to interject with the original, do a remix, throw in an instrumental from another song, which is going back to what I did when I was DJ'ing on the south coast and making mixtapes in my bedroom', he said. And on the subject of 7 Days, it felt right to ask if, writing the song now, whether he would change any of the activities 25 years since its release. He said: 'That song lives in the space of me being 17 years old, looking out my bedroom window, thinking how my life would go down. 'It is the gift that keeps giving.' 'I was not being overtly vulgar in that song – I lived with my mum and had my grandma around so I needed it to have a filter and be cool', David joked.

Lorde Brings Down The ‘Hammer' With New Single
Lorde New Zealand singer Lorde has been in the public eye since she was a teenager, effectively growing up in the spotlight and coming into her own in front of millions of fans. Her upcoming fourth studio album Virgin is shaping up to be a treatise on discovering who you are and reconciling who that person is with what others — in this case, the world — might think of you. The recently released single 'Man of the Year' elaborated on that sentiment, and her latest single 'Hammer' gives a wider look into her psyche at this moment in her life and career. 'I burn and I sing and I scheme and I dance / Some days I'm a woman, some days I'm a man," she sings on the track. Ultimately, what came out of her hard work and deep introspection was her favorite project to date. '[This album] sort of took some bravery, actually,' she confessed. 'I've never loved anything I've made so much. It's so sick.' Lorde is supporting the new project with the Ultrasound World Tour, set to criss-cross North America and Europe later this year. Hit-making musicians Blood Orange, Empress Of, Nilüfer Yanya, and Oklou will join her on select dates throughout the tour. Virgin is out June 27. The Ultrasound World Tour kicks off Sept. 17 in Austin and wraps up Dec. 17 in Brooklyn.

The estranged married couple — who've spent the past year making headlines over their pending split — delivered what felt like musical rebuttals from both sides of the divorce. Cardi came out swinging with 'Outside,' a long-teased release that lands as both a summer anthem and a bold declaration that she's moved on. It marks her first solo track of the year, delivered with her signature sound, razor-sharp bars, and lines that sound like clear shots at her ex. Over a bass-heavy beat, she reclaims her singleness with bars about being 'cuffed up too long,' and even calls out a 'good-for-nothing, low-down dirty dog' — a jab many believe is aimed at Offset.
