2 Twin Cities Restaurants and Chefs Win James Beard Awards
Tonight, the James Beard Foundation announced the winners of its Restaurant and Chef Awards, with two Twin Cities restaurants taking home awards for Best New Restaurant and Best Chef: Midwest. The Monday, June 16, ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago also included new categories to honor the beverage industry, including Best New Bar, Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, and Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service. Karyn Tomlinson, of Myriel in St. Paul, won in the Best Chef: Midwest category. Tomlinson quickly became known for her 'grandma cooking nouveau' style at Myriel after opening in 2021, combining her Scandinavian/Minnesotan heritage and French culinary training. Alluding to that 'grandma chic' cooking, Tomlinson dressed up in the same coral dress her grandmother wore when she was crowned the 'dazzle corn queen' in 1941. She ended her acceptance speech with some Midwest pride, saying 'the Midwest is beautiful, the Midwest is diverse, the Midwest is tenacious and strong.'
Bûcheron won the Best New Restaurant category, with co-owner Janas 'Jeanie' Ritter accepting the Kingfield bistro's national award. Bûcheron was one of 10 nominees in the category, and the only restaurant from the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. (The only other Minnesota restaurant ever nominated in the category was Owamni, which brought home the award in 2022.)
'It's the neighborhood restaurant we always wanted in our neighborhood,' Jeanie said during her acceptance speech, adding that some of her guests have come out to Chicago to celebrate with them tonight and thanking them 'for making it possible to do what we love.' She and her husband Adam Ritter spoke to Eater earlier this month about how they built the 'Midwest French' restaurant so they could spend more time with their two toddlers.
Ritter also told Eater before the awards that 'Minnesota cuisine is defined by the ingredients rather than the technique,' and Tomlinson seemed to echo that statement during a quick interview with Eater at the gala. She was proud of both Myriel and Bûcheron's wins as both are 'proudly Minnesottan and Midwestern and are exploring that in different ways in our connections with farmers.' She hopes that the Midwest will be recognized more in the future for its diversity and the many cultures that define the cuisine of the heartland.
Bar Brava did not take home a Beard tonight in the new Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program. (Charleston in Baltimore brought home the win.) Here are the full lists of the Twin Cities's five finalists and 10 semifinalists for the 2025 James Beard Awards.

Netflix drops first look at new political thriller series — and it already sounds like a compelling binge-watch

The streaming service recently dropped some first‑look images and confirmed a August 21, 2025 release date for 'Hostage,' a five‑part limited series led by Suranne Jones . As a sucker for juicy drama (with a dash of political chess and personal peril), I've already added 'Hostage' to my summer watchlist. Jones stars as Prime Minister Abigail Dalton, whose world is flipped upside down when her husband is kidnapped during an international summit. Standing across the table is French President Vivienne Toussaint, played by Julie Delpy, who herself is being blackmailed. From the Netflix Tudum reveal (which revealed this series was originally titled 'The Choice'), we also got a peek at Dalton delivering a speech outside 10 Downing Street, Delpy in contemplative poses, and the two leaders caught in uneasy alliance. Netflix hasn't dropped a trailer yet, but judging by the premise and the cast, this one sounds like a tense treat. And I'm sure anyone who enjoys a good summer binge-watch will want to tune in when 'Hostage' lands in August. So, if this thriller has piqued your interest as well, here's everything to know about 'Hostage' before it premieres on Netflix this August. Along with the release date and first-look images, Netflix also revealed the official synopsis: 'When the British Prime Minister's husband is kidnapped and the visiting French President is blackmailed, the two political leaders both face unimaginable choices. 'Forced into a fierce rivalry where their political futures, and lives, might hang in the balance, can they work together to uncover the plot that threatens them both?' The five-episode series marks Suranne Jones' Netflix debut, where she not only takes the lead role but also serves as an executive producer. The show is penned by Matt Charman, known for his work on 'Bridge of Spies' and 'Treason.' Jones told Netflix: 'I'm thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I'm really proud of. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time. We'd talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. Hostage was perfect — me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.' Charman also added: 'I've been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she's done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she's fierce, ruthless, and you can't take your eyes off of her.' The cast also includes Julie Delpy, Corey Mylchreest, Lucian Msamati, Ashley Thomas, James Cosmo, Martin McCann, and Jehnny Beth. Netflix describes this series as 'a political thriller with a captivating performance from Jones at its center.' Diplomatic visits are complicated enough under normal circumstances, but in 'Hostage,' it seems like the stakes are sky-high and nothing goes according to plan. Political thrillers aren't always my go-to, but I'm definitely intrigued by 'Hostage.' And that mainly comes down to its cast and the fact that the story leans just as much into personal stakes as it does global ones. Either way, I'm already invested, and I haven't even seen a trailer yet. Plus, a limited series is easy to binge-watch, especially when there's only five episodes. If Netflix sticks the landing with this one, 'Hostage' could easily be one of the standout thriller shows of the year. As a reminder, 'Hostage' lands on Netflix on August 21. BBC Content Supremo Latest: Banijay UK Boss Patrick Holland Out, Kate Phillips Person To Beat

After revealing earlier this month that there were three top contenders for the most powerful creative job in British television, audio, and streaming, Deadline hears one of the trio is now not in the running. Holland was considered to be the leading external candidate, even though he told colleagues that he was happy to remain at Banijay UK, where he has been since 2022. BBC sources speculated that salary has been a decisive factor for some external candidates, as the corporation struggles to compete with deep-pocketed commercial counterparts. Moore is paid £468,000 ($628,000). The Holland development, as well Netflix UK chief Anne Mensah ruling herself out, has cemented Kate Phillips' position as the candidate to beat. Phillips, the BBC's unscripted boss and interim chief content officer, has the support of many colleagues at the corporation, while a number of powerful producers are pulling for her to get the job. Sources said Phillips is skillfully caretaking in the content chief role as Moore prepares to leave the BBC's New Broadcasting House headquarters next week. BBC Studios Productions CEO Zai Bennett was thought to be the third strong contender for the job. Headhunters Grace Blue and Ibison have helped steer the BBC recruitment process, with director general Tim Davie taking a personal interest. Netflix Strikes 'New Kind Of Partnership' To Carry TF1 Stations In France
French viewers will soon be able to watch TF1 on a new platform — Netflix. Billed by the U.S. streaming giant as a 'new kind of partnership,' TF1's commercial stations and on-demand content will be available on Netflix from summer next year. It is further evidence of Netflix's growing power over traditional TV networks, as well as a marker of the ambition it has for its ad business. If successful, it could prove to be a test case for similar deals as Netflix aims to cement its position as the world's TV channel. Netflix said French viewers will be able to watch TF1 shows like The Voice 'without ever having to leave the service' — an unambiguous statement about its desire to keep members locked in. Greg Peters, co-CEO of Netflix, said: 'This is a first-of-its-kind partnership that plays to our strengths of giving audiences the best entertainment alongside the best discovery experience.' Rodolphe Belmer, CEO of TF1 Group, added: 'As viewing habits shift toward on-demand consumption and audience fragmentation increases, this unprecedented alliance will enable our premium content to reach unparalleled audiences and unlock new reach for advertisers.' Peters flew into France to attend Cannes Lions, the ad market festival where the deal was announced. It signals a deepening of ties between Netflix and TF1 after they partnered on co-productions like Les Combattantes and L'Agence. Last November, Netflix, TF1, and Newen Studio collaborated on the streamer's first daily drama series in France. Tout Pour La Lumière will be available on Netflix five days before its free-to-air broadcast on TF1.
