HYDRAA holds meet on monsoon preparedness
Hyderabad: In an effort to address Hyderabad's recurring flooding issues during the monsoon, the HYDRAA held a high-level consultation on Friday. The focus was on identifying the Musi river's boundaries and the nala (stormwater drain) network within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits.
The meeting brought together experts from various departments and agencies, including Revenue, Survey of India, Irrigation, Hydrology, the Strategic Nala Development Plan (SNDP), National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation, among others.
Although HYDRAA is not officially associated with the Musi beautification project, the body received several complaints regarding encroachments along the riverbanks.
Experts proposed adopting a method similar to the identification of Full Tank Levels (FTL) for lakes, proposing that the Maximum Flood Level (MFL) of the Musi be determined using historical records, village and revenue documents, satellite imagery from NRSC, and hydrological surveys. The goal is to clearly demarcate the flood-prone areas and regulate development around them.
Historical data from major floods in 1908, 1954, 2000, and 2008 were also examined to better understand the Musi's behaviour and inform future planning.
The discussion also highlighted the alarming state of the city's stormwater drains. Participants noted that the GHMC limits house nearly 940 culverts — many of which are clogged with garbage, severely restricting the natural flow of rainwater. Several nalas were either narrowed or disconnected, increasing the risk of urban flooding.
Experts recommended restoring lost links in the nala network and widening or realigning certain stretches, provided it doesn't endanger existing structures. They highlighted that the same level of planning and foresight used in road development must be applied to nala infrastructure as well.

The Cherlapally Tank in Kapra mandal of Medchal Malkajgiri district may soon be developed as a tourist and holiday destination with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. They inspected the inlet and outlet of the lake, and discussed works such as completion of fencing around the lake, strengthening of the bund and developing a pathway. For safety, solar lighting and CCTV cameras may be provided, they said, and explored the ways to ensure channelling of fresh water into the lake. Local Revenue, Irrigation and GHMC officials too joined the tour of the lake located in close proximity to the Cherlapally Jail.

HYDERABAD: Charlapally lake, located within the premises of the central prison, is set for a major facelift with plans to transform it into a clean freshwater body and recreational space. On Thursday, HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath and director general of prisons Soumya Mishra visited the lake to assess its potential, accompanied by officials from the revenue, irrigation, GHMC, and prisons departments. Spread across 58 acres, the lake holds limited water but is relatively clean. Officials noted its potential for biodiversity and public use, provided it is maintained systematically. Proposed developments include fencing, bund strengthening, a 3-km walking path, seating areas, greenery, solar lighting, and CCTV surveillance. Local industries have expressed interest in supporting the project under CSR. A detailed project report will soon be prepared to assess costs.

GHMC chief orders swift action on Durgam Cheruvu drainage issue
Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan has instructed officials to promptly address the drainage issue at Durgam Cheruvu. On Thursday, the Commissioner inspected the situation alongside the Zonal Commissioner and other relevant officials. During the inspection, the GHMC Commissioner directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to regularly desilt the sewer lines and take full ownership of their maintenance. This, he stressed, is crucial to prevent sewage overflows onto walking tracks and to eliminate the entry of sewage into the lake, thereby ensuring a clean and hassle free environment for visitors. He further directed the Executive Engineer of the Lakes division to expedite the diversion of the sewage pipeline. The Raheja CSR team was advised to enhance park amenities to improve the overall aesthetics of the lake area. During the visit, the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was also reviewed, with a recommendation to conduct NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) water testing in addition to existing third party checks. The inspection also included a review of the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) stormwater drain (SWD) works. Officials were instructed to complete this work by September. The Zonal Commissioner was requested to review the progress weekly and ensure that any issues are addressed promptly.
