Indian Air Force aerobatic team withdraws from LIMA'25

LANGKAWI: The Indian Air Force aerobatic team, Surya Kiran, has withdrawn its participation in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25).
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said India had to withdraw due to issues currently affecting the country.
"They had expressed readiness to take part. However, they cannot proceed due to the situation back home," he told a press conference after inspecting preparations for LIMA'25 here on Monday (May 19).
He said the exhibition would still showcase aerobatic displays by several renowned international teams, including the Russian Knights from Russia and Jupiter from Indonesia.
"For local teams, we have solo performances by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Layang-Layang Flying Academy and Aerotree Defence and Services," he said.
Mohamed Khaled said a total of 57 aircraft would be featured in the 17th edition of the exhibition, including 43 static air assets from local and foreign participants, up from 34 in 2023.
"Of the total, 26 are local air assets while 17 are from abroad, including countries such as Brunei, Germany, Italy, Canada, Singapore, Russia and the United States. Commercial aircraft from India, Brazil, France and Italy will also be on display," he said.
On the maritime segment, he said 31 ships from domestic and foreign fleets would take part in the static display and fleet review.
"This is an increase from just 19 ships at LIMA 2023. Of the 31, 19 are from Malaysia while 12 are from countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and the United States.
"For the maritime demonstration, a total of 39 assets will be involved compared to 28 during the previous edition," he added.

Mohamed Khaled said the Bentong ginger cultivation initiative in the area has shown promising results, delivering high returns in a short period, making it one of the most viable cash crops. 'In terms of market price, one kilogramme can fetch up to RM40, and each plant can yield about two kilogrammes. Earlier during the programme, we saw 300 plants, and the harvest cycle is every six months. ...with 300 plants, participants in this programme could earn about RM24,000 over six months. 'This means they can potentially earn RM4,000 a month. The cultivation and care process is simple, with guidance provided by the university. Mature ginger can go for up to RM60 per kilogramme,' he said. Elaborating, he said that by setting up cooperatives and participating in the downstream industry, residents can generate extra income by processing ginger-based products. He also announced his long-term plans to transform Kota Tinggi into the country's primary hub for the ginger industry, covering cultivation, value chains, and downstream products. He urged the community not to rely solely on government aid but instead to actively participate in agricultural projects to ensure long-term sustainability and success. Meanwhile, Kota Tinggi Timur Area Farmers Organisation chairman Hashim Muhammad said the project has the potential to create more job opportunities, generate additional income for farmers, and uplift the rural community. He said today's event marked the rural community's commitment to exploring high-value crop cultivation, expressing hope that the initiative can be expanded across the entire Kota Tinggi parliamentary constituency.

Japan scraps US meeting after Washington demands more defence spending

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had been expected to meet their Japanese counterparts in Washington on July 1 for annual 2+2 security talks. But Tokyo scrapped the meeting after the United States' side asked Japan to boost defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP, higher than an earlier request of 3 per cent, the paper cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter, including two officials in Tokyo, as saying. A US official who did not want to be identified confirmed Japan had "postponed" the talks but said the decision was made several weeks ago. The source did not cite a reason. A non-government source familiar with the issue said he had also heard Japan had pulled out of the meeting, but not the reason for it doing so. US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said she had no comment on the FT report when asked about it at regular briefing, and the Pentagon also had no immediate comment. Japan's embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment. The Financial Times said the new higher spending demand was made in recent weeks by Elbridge Colby, the third-most senior Pentagon official, who has also recently upset another key US ally in the Indo-Pacific by launching a review of a project to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines. In March, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said that other nations do not decide Japan's defence budget after Colby called in his nomination hearing to be under secretary of defense for policy for Tokyo to spend more to counter China. The FT said the decision to cancel the July 1 meeting was also related to Japan's July 20 Upper House elections, at which the ruling Liberal Democratic Party is expected to suffer a loss of seats.
