RHB sustains growth

The Star28-05-2025

PETALING JAYA: RHB Bank Bhd (RHB) is keeping a cautious stance amid evolving macroeconomic conditions, shaped by interest rate movements and global trade dynamics, although it expects the recent reduction in the statutory reserve requirement by Bank Negara to provide funding flexibility in the quarters ahead.
In addition, the lender is projecting for the banking sector to maintain its strong capital and liquidity positions.
RHB's group managing director and group chief executive Datuk Mohd Rashid Mohamad said the bank's new three-year strategic roadmap, named PROGRESS27, has set a clear course for the lender toward becoming the best in service, enhancing profitability and reinforcing its purpose-driven commitment.
'With focused execution priorities, from simplifying customer journeys to advancing our sustainability ambitions, we are well-positioned to deliver near-term value while unlocking long-term value for all stakeholders,' added Mohd Rashid.
Releasing its results for the first quarter ended March 31 (1Q25) yesterday, RHB saw net profit inch up by 2.7% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM750mil, despite a marginal dip in revenue to RM4.39bil.
The 1Q25 performance translates to an earnings per share of 17.2 sen.
The group attributed the growth in net profit primarily to higher net funding income and improved credit cost management, which was offset by lower non-fund based income, higher tax expense, higher operating expenses and higher share of loss in associates.
At the same time, it reported that total income stood at RM2bil, a marginal dip of 1.9% y-o-y mainly from contraction in non-fund based income due to lower net gain on foreign exchange (forex) and derivatives, as well as net trading and investment income.
RHB said it has maintained operational stability, supported by prudent cost management, continued strength in capital and liquidity positions, reflected by the containment of cost growth at 1.2%, while cost-to-income ratio stood at 47.4% from 45.9% a year ago, reflecting the marginal contraction in income.
Commenting on the results, Mohd Rashid remarked that the sustaining of the bank's earnings growth momentum in 1Q25 was underpinned by solid fundamentals and early traction from its PROGRESS27 strategy.
'Our cost optimisation efforts are beginning to deliver results, enabling us to contain expenses while driving growth in key segments.
'At the same time, our continued focus on asset quality has led to a reduction in credit cost. We remained disciplined in execution, strengthening our core capabilities, driving operational excellence, and unlocking new growth opportunities.'
Net fund based income increased by 7.3% to RM1.49bil y-o-y on the back of gross loans and financing growth of 6.3%, while non-fund based income declined by 20.2% to RM561mil from a year ago, driven by lower net trading and investment income, lower net gain on forex and derivatives as well as lower income from its insurance business, partly offset by higher fee income.
Net allowance for credit losses was lower at RM105.8mil, primarily due to lower credit losses on loans and financing.
Meanwhile, total assets of the group increased by 0.7% from December 2024 to RM352.5bil as at March 31, 2025, with net assets per share at RM7.39, and shareholders' equity at RM32.2bil.
Concurrently, the group's gross loans and financing grew by 6.3% y-o-y to RM239.2bil, mainly supported by growth in mortgage, corporate, commercial and automotive finance.
RHB's gross impaired loans (GIL) increased marginally to RM3.6bil, with a GIL ratio of 1.50%, from 1.47%, or RM3.5bil in December 2024.
The group reported a domestic GIL ratio of 1.22%, which is lower than the banking industry's GIL ratio of 1.42%. Loan loss coverage ratio for the group, including regulatory reserves, improved to 115.7%, while it stands at 76.9% if regulatory reserves are excluded.
Customer deposits increased by 2.3% to RM248.5bil, primarily due to growth in money market time deposits by 31.3%, offset by a decrease in current accounts and saving accounts (Casa) by 1.1% and fixed deposits by 0.9%. Casa composition stood at 28.0% as at March 31, 2025, and liquidity coverage ratio remained sound at 134.6%.
Compared to the previous quarter ended December 2024, RHB saw net profit decrease by 10.1% from RM834.5mil, which it attributed mainly to lower non-fund based income and higher allowances for credit losses.
These were partly offset by lower operating expenses, higher net funding income, lower impairment on other non-financial assets and lower share of loss in associates during 1Q25.
RHB did not declare any dividends for the quarter.

RHB initiates 'Neutral' call on MBSB, sees 6-7pct dividend yield cushion

KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Investment Bank Bhd has initiated coverage on MBSB Bank Bhd with a 'Neutral' rating, valuing the stock at 67 sen per share, or about 2 per cent below its current market price of 68 sen. In its research note, RHB described the upcoming financial years as a transitional phase for MBSB, as the Shariah-compliant bank focuses on rebalancing its funding and financing mix to enhance overall asset quality. "This will take time to kick in. In the meantime, MBSB continues to hold on to excess capital, which management intends to utilise for growth whilst maintaining attractive dividend payouts," the research firm said. As part of its Flight26 strategic plan, MBSB aims to achieve an 8 per cent return on equity (ROE) by the financial year 2026 (FY2026), doubling the 4 per cent ROE recorded in FY2024. This target is underpinned by expectations of a stronger earnings profile, improved funding mix, better fee and treasury income, and continued cost discipline. RHB noted that MBSB currently holds the highest common equity tier-1 (CET-1) ratio in the sector at 19.4 per cent, with further upside potential due to its sector-high risk-weighted assets density of 74 per cent. This capital strength enables the bank to pursue above-industry financing growth while supporting sustainable dividend payouts. On the asset quality front, the bank's gross impaired financing (GIF) ratio stood at 5.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2025 (Q1 2025), notably higher than the 0.5 per cent to 2.2 per cent range among peers. "We understand that a significant portion of MBSB's GIFs come from legacy construction and collateralised personal financing accounts, but these have a long legal process and recovery period, and over 95 per cent of the GIFs are collateralised with high recovery rates," RHB said. The research house also highlighted several potential risks, including slower financing growth, weaker deposit traction, softer non-financing income, rising credit costs, and key management departures. Despite these concerns, RHB expects MBSB's dividend yield to remain attractive at around 6 per cent in FY2025, serving as a buffer against downside risks. "We project a 14 per cent compound annual growth rate in net profit between FY2024 and FY2027, with profit forecast to rise from RM472 million in FY2025 to RM597 million in FY2027. "This projection is based on an operating income compound annual growth rate, positive operating leverage supported by cost discipline, and credit costs. "We assume a 70 per cent dividend payout ratio, which translates to attractive dividend yields of 6 to 7 per cent for FY2025 and FY2026," RHB added.

RHB sees long-term growth potential in Carey Island development

KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Investment Bank Bhd has maintained its "Buy" recommendation on Sime Darby Property Bhd, citing strong prospects from the group's upcoming industrial development at Carey Island in Selangor. The research house sees Carey Island as a promising economic growth corridor, driven by its close proximity to port infrastructure and the final ECRL terminal at Port Klang, positioning the area as a key logistics and industrial hub. "The government also has plans for a new port at Carey Island in the future. The joint venture will further strengthen Sime Darby Property's presence on the west side of the Klang Valley, as it has already established a strong foothold in Bandar Bukit Raja, Subang Jaya, and Elmina," RHB said in a note. Last Friday, Sime Darby Property and SD Guthrie Bhd signed a joint venture agreement to develop up to 809 hectares of land in Carey Island. The project is still at the planning stage, and no details were provided on land price, gross development value or effective stake. "However, although SD Guthrie may hold a majority stake in the joint venture as it is the landowner, we think Sime Darby Property may play a major role in the development, given the latter's experience and track record in industrial development," RHB said. RHB believes Carey Island holds strong long-term growth prospects, supported by Sime Darby Group's proven track record in developing key economic corridors such as the Guthrie Corridor, Subang Jaya, and Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0. "Carey Island may be a new growth corridor in the next 10 to 15 years. It has been identified by the government as the new site for a world-class port due to its strategic location near Port Klang and proximity to Pulau Indah," it said. The research firm also noted that the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), currently under construction, will terminate at Port Klang, with planned extensions to Westport and Northport, further enhancing the area's connectivity. Additionally, Sime Darby Property currently operates two estates and palm oil mills on Carey Island, which RHB said could serve as a foundation for its upcoming industrial development. In the future, the joint industrial development should mainly cater to supporting the import/export industries that are highly dependent on the port facilities, it said. "We make no changes to our forecasts and valuations for now, as the development may only start in four to five years, since infrastructure and land-clearing works will need to be completed first. "Overall, we are positive on this strategic tie-up, as it marks a new milestone in collaborating with SD Guthrie. Sime Darby Property may be able to tap into more development opportunities with SD Guthrie over the longer term, given the latter's huge land resources," RHB said.
