'A Huge Transition Time': Tariffs Test The U.S. Economy
On Wednesday, the President reacted to news that U.S. economic growth slowed in the first quarter of this year, according to the Commerce Department. The data shows the U.S. economy contracted over the course of a few months, with Q1 gross domestic product (GDP) shrinking by 0.3 percent. FOX Business' The Big Money Show co-anchor Taylor Riggs says while this quarter of economic decline is a negative consequence of the President's tariff plans, it is not all bad news for America's economy. Riggs joins the Rundown to explain what falling GDP means, the emphasis on patience with the Trump economic agenda, and the trade deals to come.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) is expected to sign legislation banning cell phone use from 'bell-to-bell' starting next school year. New York will join eight states implementing such restrictions on phone use in the classroom. Stephen Colbert floats masked ICE agents possibly getting shot in states with ‘Stand Your Ground' laws
'The Late Show' host Stephen Colbert questioned whether 'Stand Your Ground' laws put masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at risk of being shot during an interview with Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., on Thursday. As Democrats across the country continue to criticize the federal agency's use of masks and civilian clothing, the liberal host questioned whether officers are being put in danger in 'Stand Your Ground' states like Florida. Advertisement Colbert said he was alarmed because, 'it does feel like kidnapping, because, as you said, unmarked windowless vans will show up. Men will get out wearing masks… no identifying patches, do not identify themselves. They don't have badges.' 'They grab people and put them in a van, in a state like Florida that has a 'Stand Your Ground' law and people can open carry,' he went on. 'It's dangerous for those officers, not just for the people, because why wouldn't you think that you were being attacked?' Despite Colbert's claim, open carry is not legal in Florida. It is allowed under certain, limited circumstances, such as hunting or fishing. In February 2025, however, Governor Ron DeSantis urged the legislature to support open carry. Wu compared ICE agents wearing masks to members of the neo-Nazi group the Nationalist Social Club-131 (NSC-131) during a press conference on June 5, amid government claims that ICE agents have faced a 413% increase in assaults. Jeffries has called for the identification of ICE agents who perpetrate 'aggressive overreach.'

Chip equipment stocks fall after US plans to revoke China waivers
-- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) stock fell 2%, Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) shares tumbled 5%, and Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) dropped 4% following reports that a U.S. official plans to revoke technology waivers for chipmakers operating in China. Jeffrey Kessler, who leads the export controls unit at the Commerce Department, has informed major semiconductor manufacturers including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Samsung Electronics (KS:005930), and SK Hynix of his intention to cancel blanket waivers that currently allow them to ship American chip-making equipment to their factories in China without applying for separate licenses each time, according to the Wall Street Journal. The potential policy change is reportedly part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to restrict critical U.S. technology from going to China. If implemented, the move could create significant disruption both diplomatically and economically, coming shortly after the U.S. and China established a trade truce in London. White House officials have stated that this action would not represent a new trade escalation but would instead align the licensing system for chip equipment with China's existing system for rare-earth materials. They added that the U.S. and China continue to make progress on completing their London agreement. "Chip makers will still be able to operate in China. The new enforcement mechanisms on chips mirror licensing requirements that apply to other semiconductor companies that export to China and ensure the United States has an equal and reciprocal process," a Commerce Department spokesman said. The semiconductor equipment sector is particularly vulnerable to changes in U.S.-China trade policy, as many companies rely on access to the Chinese market for significant portions of their revenue.
