Mental health: 'A bit of a walk in open air is the best medicine'
I'm back with the latest in our 25in25 series - a chance to shine a spotlight on interesting people and places in our region.This week I'm in Brinnington, a suburb of Stockport in Greater Manchester.Once an area of open farmland, everything changed in the 1950s and 1960s when council housing developments transformed the natural environment.Nestled amongst the high-rise flats, though, there are still nearly 400 acres (161 hectares) of woodland, waterways and wildlife.This natural beauty is set against the industrial backdrop of the Tame viaduct, known locally as the 16 arches.
Sand martins and kingfishers nest in the river banks.The mill ponds and wetlands are visited by wildfowl including geese, herons, grebes, cormorants, coots and a variety of ducks. It is a truly serene place in which locals and visitors alike can walk, talk, stop and watch the world go by.It's the perfect location for weekly mindfulness walks led by Danny Drayson, from Age UK Stockport."A lot of people don't know about the area," he said."So it's my job to get people out of the flats and get walking."When asked why that was so important to him, he replied: "Because it benefits everybody."A bit of a walk in open air is the best medicine for anybody."For the past three years, Danny has been outside Hollow End flats every Monday morning ready to lead the walk, regardless of distractions like poor weather or bank holidays.He thinks "there is no better way to start the week".
'Creating friendships'
I joined a lovely bunch, some from Brinnington and others from further afield.One visitor, Jaqueline, said: "I was nervous to begin with but the people have been so friendly and lovely and I'd never been to this park before."As well as making the most of local open spaces and improving mental and physical health, Danny hopes the walks, which were set up in collaboration between Age UK Stockport and Life Leisure, will help create friendships. Jimmy Glindon has certainly been helped by the walks."I was well overweight - I wasn't going anywhere, I wasn't doing anything with my life," he said. "I was miserable, suffering with depression and anxiety."I'm not sure where my life would be [without the group] but it wouldn't be half as good as it is now."Anyone wanting to join in should head to Hollow End Towers on Northumberland Road at 10:30 BST on Mondays.

‘Capri-inspired' beach bar with real sand and Ibiza-style DJ sessions opens in UK city
IN THE centre of a UK city, you can find a new Capri-inspired beach club with real sand, cabanas and live saxophone players. Capri Beach Club in Manchester transports visitors to the Italian coast with pretty cabanas, lounge chairs and real sand to truly bring the Mediterranean feel. 4 4 In fact, over 15 tons of sand were brought from across the UK to be used for the bar. Located in Exchange Square, the beach club has a large bar which serves a variety of drinks including cocktails and champagne. There is also a resident DJ that plays tunes with the vibe of an Ibiza beach club. In addition, there is a resident saxophonist and a selection of street food vendors. Food options include pizza, burgers and fish and chips. And if you have a sweet tooth, you can grab an ice cream as well, with a variety of flavours to choose from. Drink options include frozen cocktails and classic Aperol spritzes. There are two bookable VIP areas, which are both under wooden gazebos, enveloped by linen curtains. The VIP experiences means you also get table service in the space, which can host up to 14 people. One recent visitor said: "Great atmosphere with loud music and chippy/wood fired pizza, lot's of comfortable cosy seating areas to chill out with real sand and decking! Beach bar "We found cosy seats to chill out in and people watched whilst listening to the good tunes." Another added: "Perfect for chilling and unwind with family and friends with a great relaxing music. "Plus, the ambiance is amazing plus the food and drinks were delicious." A third said: "Super nice beach bar in the centre of Manchester. "Nicely decorated and friendly staff. "There were several food trucks, such as ice cream, pizza and churros. "There was a wide choice of drinks at the bar." The Capri Beach Club is open 11am−11pm until September. These are the UK's best beach bars – with DJ sets, sunset views and signature cocktails. Beachfront lido that's free to use to close this summer ahead of major renovation
ONE of the UK's best free lidos will close in the height of summer to undergo renovation works. Shoalstone Seawater Pool has experienced cracking due to harsh tides and will be closed off to visitors in a matter of weeks. 4 4 Shoalstone Pool in Brixham announced in 2024 that it had received Government funding to go towards a £750,000 pool upgrade. The pool's managers said the work would include the reconstruction of the north west corner after waves crashing against the pool caused cracks to appear. Sadly, work on the pool means that it will close to swimmers. David Thomas, operations manager said: "We'll be closing the pool in August for essential upgrades. "Thanks to a government grant, we'll be installing a new deep end, a raised deck, replacing railings, and reinforcing the walls to ensure safety for future generations." The website states that the pool could be closed off as soon as July to prepare for the repairs. An official date for the closure is yet to be announced. The swimming pool is 53 metres long making it one of the largest tidal pools in the world and sits on the edge of Shoalstone Beach in Devon. There is no entry charge, but they do ask for a voluntary donations. It asks for donations of £3.50 per swim, or £8 per family to help cover running costs. As well as regular swimming sessions, there are other activities like pooch-friendly swims, wellbeing days, fun days, twilight and night swims. New £4million lido to open in UK next year 4 On the side, the pool offers sessions of yoga and tai chi. They also hold Santa Runs and Beer Festivals for the people of Brixham and Torbay. The pool is tidal and relies on the sea to fill it, so it's always best to visit in the hours either side of low tide during the summer months. Shoalstone Pool is considered a gem for locals and visitors alike. One visitors wrote on Tripadvisor: "This venue is truly unique. A beautiful, well cared for seawater pool. I have spent many sunny days swimming in the pool, as an adult and child." Another added: "Why doesn't Brixham shout about this place? It's awesome! We found out about it by accident, from someone in a shop. It's a little further away from the harbour - but I always think the best places are the ones off the beaten track." A third said: "I had the best time in Shoalstone pool. So invigorating. Would definitely go again when next in beautiful Brixham. Easy to park and the views are amazing." Plus, here are the UK's best outdoor water parks and lidos – as temperatures are set to rise over the weekend. And another lido that's set to reopen this summer after three years – and an £8.75 million upgrade.
