Global leaders react to US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites
SINGAPORE: Global reactions to the US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday (Jun 22) ranged from firm support by Israel to urgent calls for de-escalation by the United Nations and several other nations.
US President Donald Trump declared that the strikes had "completely and totally obliterated" Iran's nuclear sites and warned that Tehran must now "make peace or we will go after" other targets in Iran.
Here is how the international community responded:
ISRAEL PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU
"Congratulations, President Trump. Your bold decision to target Iran's nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history ... History will record that President Trump acted to deny the world's most dangerous regime the world's most dangerous weapons."
Netanyahu also said that Iran's nuclear programme threatened the country's "very existence and endangered world peace".
UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL ANTONIO GUTERRES
"I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.
"There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world," Guterres said.
He called on member states to de-escalate and to uphold its obligations under the UN Charter and other rules of international law.
"At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos. There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace."
"Venezuela Condemns US Military Aggression Against Iran and Demands an Immediate Cessation of Hostilities.
"The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela firmly and categorically condemns the bombing carried out by the United States military, at the request of the State of Israel, against nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan complexes."
MEXICO FOREIGN MINISTRY
"The ministry urgently calls for diplomatic dialogue for peace between the parties involved in the Middle East conflict.
In keeping with our constitutional principles of foreign policy and our country's pacifist conviction, we reiterate our call to de-escalate tensions in the region. The restoration of peaceful coexistence among the states of the region is the highest priority."
CUBA PRESIDENT MIGUEL DIAZ-CANEL
"We strongly condemn the US bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities, which constitutes a dangerous escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
"The aggression seriously violates the UN Charter and international law and plunges humanity into a crisis with irreversible consequences."

LAUSANNE, Switzerland :Former Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry took over the leadership of the International Olympic Committee from Thomas Bach in a ceremony on Monday with the 2028 Los Angeles Games already threatening to fill her in-tray to overflowing. Coventry, who starts her eight-year spell officially on Tuesday as the most powerful sports administrator in the world, became the first woman and first African to be elected head of the Olympic ruling body in March. Much of the discussion during campaigning focused on the IOC's need for change in its marketing strategies with several top Olympic sponsors having left in the past 12 months. However, with Los Angeles hit by protests against immigration raids, and relations tense between state and city officials, and the U.S. government, the 2028 Games have become the major talking point in the movement that would ordinarily be focusing on next year's Milano-Cortina Winter Games. Coventry has long-standing ties with the United States, dating back to her time as a leading swimmer at Auburn University in Alabama. That will prove useful ahead of LA 2028, and she has said she will seek to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the Games. Coventry will also need to find time to help secure the long-term finances of the movement. The IOC, which generates billions of dollars in revenues each year in sponsorship and broadcasting deals for the Olympics, has secured $7.3 billion for 2025-28 and $6.2 billion for 2029-2032. More contracts are expected for both periods. COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES Coventry is also expected to continue the IOC's plans to expand commercial opportunities for sponsors at the Olympics with the organisation's finances in a robust state and the privately-funded LA Olympics a good place to start. Coventry needed only one round of voting to clinch the race to succeed Bach, beating six other candidates, making history for the African continent, with the IOC having been ruled for 131 years by European or North American men. Her background and being the first female president will be assets in a diverse IOC membership and the international makeup of Olympic stakeholders. On Monday she was handed the golden key to the IOC by Bach, who was the organisation's president for 12 years. "I am really honoured I get to walk this journey with you. I cannot wait for anything that lies ahead," Coventry said in her address to IOC members and other Olympic stakeholders. "I know I have the best team to support me and our movement over the next eight years." Coventry will hold a two-day workshop this week to get feedback from members on key IOC issues. Singapore, China sign four agreements on talent, knowledge sharing; leaders discuss OTC bond arrangement
[BEIJING] Singapore and China on Monday (Jun 23) inked four agreements on cooperation in areas such as training and knowledge exchange, in a ceremony witnessed by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Chinese Premier Li Qiang. This was on the first full day of PM Wong's introductory visit to China, which is from Jun 22 to 26. One memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on Monday will see the joint development of legal talent. Under the MOU, trainees nominated by Singapore's law ministry and China's justice ministry will attend postgraduate law programmes in each other's law schools. They will also take part in courses conducted by government agencies, law schools, bar associations, law societies, arbitration centres and other relevant institutions. Singapore and China have also signed a letter of intent to explore establishing a Senior Officials' Exchange Programme, which is intended to deepen the two countries' longstanding human resource development cooperation and strengthen officials' mutual understanding and friendship through more frequent exchanges. It will serve as an additional platform for the exchange of views on leadership development and dealing with common challenges, complementing the Singapore-China Forum on Leadership.
