Horse racing-Favourite Trawlerman wins Gold Cup at Royal Ascot

Straits Times15 hours ago

ASCOT, England - Favourite Trawlerman, ridden by William Buick, led all the way to win Royal Ascot's headline Gold Cup and make up for missing out last year on a sizzling hot Ladies Day afternoon on Thursday.
The seven-year-old 85-40 shot, runner-up last year and trained by John and Thady Gosden, comfortably beat Aidan O'Brien-trained Illinois (9-4) with Dubai Future (28-1) finishing third.
The race attracted eight entries, with 2024 winner Kyprios absent after being retired in May due to injury.
First run in 1807, the showpiece race of the week is a two-and-a-half-mile marathon that ranks as one of the greatest tests of stamina in flat racing and features the best staying horses in Europe.
The Thursday of the five-day festival that starts on Tuesday is traditionally known as Ladies Day and stands out as an afternoon mixing fashion and sport on the nation's social calendar. REUTERS

Mandatory Credit: Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Three-times world figure skating champion Kaori Sakamoto is to retire after the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics next year, the Japanese 25-year-old told reporters in Kobe on Friday. Sakamoto became the first woman in 56 years to win the figure skating world singles title three times in a row last year, matching the feat of American Peggy Fleming, who won three world titles between 1966-68. "I feel like I have less than a year left. I'll be 29 at the following Olympics, which is out of the question," Kyodo news reported Sakamoto as saying. "I'll try to bring things to a close the year I turn 26." Sakamoto, who won bronze at the 2022 Winter Olympics, missed out on a fourth straight world title in March when she finished runner-up to American Alysa Liu. Sport-Euro 2028 among events to benefit as UK govt pledges $1.2 billion investment in sport

Sport-Euro 2028 among events to benefit as UK govt pledges $1.2 billion investment in sport The UK government has pledged to spend more than 900 million pounds ($1.21 billion) to improve grassroots sporting infrastructure and support major events in the country such as Euro 2028, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said. More than 500 million pounds would be used to support the delivery of world-class events, including next year's European athletics championships and the start of the men's and women's races of the Tour de France in 2027. "This major backing for world-class events will drive economic growth across the country, delivering on our Plan for Change," Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said in a statement on Thursday. Affirming a commitment made by Nandy's predecessor Lucy Frazer in 2023, the government will also invest at least 400 million pounds in communities around the country to build new or upgrade existing grassroots sports facilities. Bayern's Kompany cautious of 'dangerous' Club World Cup rivals Boca

Jun 15, 2025; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; FC Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany looks on against Auckland City FC during the second half of a group stage match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at TQL Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Katie Stratman-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Bayern Munich strolled to a 10-0 win over Auckland City in their Club World Cup opener but there will be no room for complacency when they face Argentina's Boca Juniors in their second Group C match, the German club's coach Vincent Kompany said on Thursday. Boca came close to winning their opener against Benfica but let a two-goal lead slip away in a 2-2 draw with the Portuguese side, and Kompany said they presented a real threat on the transition. "We know the quality of the tournament ... every team taking part here is a winning team," Kompany told reporters ahead of Friday's game, with Bayern looking to win their third Club World Cup title. "Boca are a very dangerous team in the transition game. They believe in their moments. The team spirit is good. We have respect for Boca. But we're looking at ourselves and want to bring our qualities to the game." Kompany said they were familiar with the Argentine style of play with many of the country's players plying their trade in Europe. "We know a lot of Argentinian players from the European leagues. It's a football we understand very well," he added. "It might feel a bit like an away game. But we want to be Bayern Munich. We have to show the right emotion." Kompany was happy to welcome attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala and centre back Dayot Upamecano back into the side after missing over two months with injuries. Germany's Musiala, who scored 12 goals as Bayern secured their 34th German top-flight title, came off the bench to score a hat-trick against Auckland on Sunday. "Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano haven't played for a long time. We're very happy that they're back and fit. Integration is an important issue and we have to look at it. Otherwise, everyone's 100% fit," Kompany said. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
