Red Sea Film Foundation Returns to Cannes with Four Films

CairoScene12-05-2025

Red Sea Film Foundation returns to Cannes, spotlighting Arab, Asian, and African voices with four bold films and boundary-pushing stories.
As the red carpet rolls out for the 78th Cannes Film Festival, the spotlight turns toward voices from the Arab world, Asia, and Africa. Among them, the Red Sea Film Foundation returns to Cannes, championing regional stories on a global stage.
This year, the Foundation presents four films supported through its key initiatives: the Red Sea Fund, Red Sea Souk, and Red Sea Labs. These platforms are designed not only to finance projects but to help build a sustainable film ecosystem across the region.
The selected titles include Promised Sky by Erige Sehiri, which follows three immigrant women in Tunisia whose fragile refuge is disrupted by the arrival of an orphan girl. Aisha Can't Fly Away by Morad Mostafa centres on a 26-year-old African caregiver in Cairo's Ain Shams neighbourhood, navigating violence, exploitation, and official neglect. Dandelion's Odyssey by Momoko Seto takes a surreal turn, following four seed-friends cast into space after a nuclear explosion as they search for a new home. Life After Siham by Namir Abdel Messeeh traces the director's journey through grief as he reconnects with his late mother through film.
Together, these films explore themes of displacement, identity, memory, and resilience, offering distinct perspectives on the human experience. Beyond the screenings, the Foundation is also active at the Marché du Film, where the Saudi Pavilion has become a space for industry connections. On May 16, it will host a 'Meet the Red Sea Team' panel, allowing filmmakers and producers to engage with the team behind its vision.

Hadia Ghaleb & 2oolameme Are Making a Card Game About Ambition

Hadia Ghaleb & 2oolameme Are Making a Card Game About Ambition Set to release on 21st June, Tomoo7y Katel is game is built around Ghaleb's own public-facing, hustle-heavy, occasionally chaotic experience of carving space as a digital-first Arab woman. What happens when two For You page veterans, after spending the better part of a decade building digital empires, drop a card game together? You get Tomoo7y Katel - part gameplay, part personality quiz, part group therapy for anyone who's ever been chronically online and dangerously ambitious. At first glance, it's an unlikely pairing. In this corner you've got Hadia Ghaleb, fashion entrepreneur, globe-trotter, and full-time poster girl for curated chaos. Then you have Sarah Abouelkhair, the founder of 2oolameme, meme queen turned CEO, architect of Egypt's funniest corners of the internet. Despite operating with different vibes, they've been working off the same blueprint of 'build your own lane, take the comments, keep posting anyway'. So, they teamed up. Because why not turn the most screenshot-worthy parts of your public life into playable cards? Tomoo7y Katel invites players to collect Tomoo7 cards (ambitions, wins, milestones) while dodging Talakeek (haters, trolls, and vibe-killers) using 7odood cards to block the noise and keep climbing. First to hold 10 dreams, wins. But only if they survive the chaos. The game is basically Hadia's internet presence on cardstock. There's the silver car. The cover story. The mum's voice notes. Even the trolls get a moment. "This game is my story, but it's also every woman's story,' Ghaleb tells us. 'I've always believed ambition is a beautiful thing - no matter how many people try to kill it.' "It's a celebration of what happens when women write their own narratives - loudly, unapologetically, and with a whole lot of wit,' Abouelkhair adds. The game is the feed. It's your comments section. It's your algorithm on shuffle. And somehow, it's also your cousin screaming 'who threw this Talkeeka at me?!' across the table at 1 AM. And it will soon be available for all the hustlers and ragebaiters starting June 21st, 2025.

Two Dubai Restaurants Make the World's 50 Best List for 2025

With Trèsind Studio crowned Best in the Middle East and Orfali Bros Bistro making a triumphant return, Dubai's dining scene proves it's playing in the big leagues. Jun 20, 2025 Dubai's culinary clout just climbed a little higher. The World's 50 Best Restaurants list for 2025 has landed, and two of the city's most talked-about dining spots have made the cut — cementing the Emirate's status as a serious gastronomic player. At No.27, Trèsind Studio takes home the title of Best Restaurant in the Middle East, a well-earned accolade for chef Himanshu Saini and his immersive, boundary-pushing tasting menu. Now located on Palm Jumeirah, the 20-seat restaurant offers an intimate experience where diners move between curated spaces designed to mirror the narrative of the meal. Meanwhile, Orfali Bros Bistro re-enters the list at No.37, bringing its playful, genre-bending menu back into the global spotlight. Helmed by the Orfali brothers from Aleppo — Mohamad, Wassim, and Omar — the family-run bistro blends traditional Syrian influences with Asian techniques and European flair, all served up in the heart of Dubai. From theatrical fine dining to wildly creative comfort food, this year's rankings show that Dubai isn't just keeping pace with the world's best — it's helping define what comes next.
