Provincial police are seeking witnesses to an attempted robbery Wednesday at a jewelry store in the town of Alfred, about 70 km east of Ottawa.

In a release, OPP said they were called at about 5 p.m., to a store on St-Philippe Street.

Three males had smashed the store's window but immediately fled empty-handed when an alarm was activated. There may have been a fourth person waiting in the vehicle.

The individuals are described only as Black males, wearing dark hoodies and long pants.

The suspects fled westbound in a white Toyota RAV 4. The truck had been reported stolen earlier this week in Ottawa.

Detectives believe the same suspects and vehicle were involved in a smash-and-grab robbery later that afternoon at Place d'Orléans shopping centre.

Three cases have led to charges against five people, while several others remain under investigation.

Motorcyclist dies after colliding with ATV near Chesterville
Social Sharing A motorcyclist died in a collision on a rural road southeast of Chesterville, Ont., on Friday night, according to Ontario Provincial Police. The 40-year-old man collided with an all-terrain vehicle parked on County Road 11, about 60 kilometres southeast of Ottawa, OPP said in a statement Saturday. OPP officers from the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry detachment responded to an emergency call just after 10 p.m. Friday. A passerby performed CPR on the man until Cornwall-SDG paramedics arrived and attempted to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man had staying in the North Grenville area, according to the news release, which did not identify him. His family has been notified. An investigation is ongoing.

Motorcyclist dies following crash with parked ATV in North Dundas: OPP
A motorcyclist has died after a collision with an ATV that was parked on a roadway in the township of North Dundas Friday evening. Police say they received a call just after 10 p.m., reporting a collision between a motorcycle and an ATV on County Road 11, southeast of Chesterville. Despite lifesaving efforts, the motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene, according to police. 'A passerby performed CPR on the motorcycle rider until Cornwall-SDG Paramedics arrived on the scene and began life-saving measures,' the OPP said in a news release. The victim has been identified as a 40-year-old man and police have notified his family. Officers say that according to the initial investigation, the motorcycle was eastbound when it crashed with the ATV that was parked on the roadway. The investigation is ongoing.

'As a result of the collision, one driver is deceased, and a second driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance,' police said in a news release Saturday morning. The local OPP detachment attended the scene along with Algoma ambulance services and the Wawa Fire Department. Authorities announced the highway closure on social media at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, with the roadway closed in both directions between Highway 563 in Batchawana Bay and Pinewood Drive in Wawa. 'Expect a lengthy closure,' OPP wrote in its initial post. Ontario 511 indicates the closure actually began before 9:16 p.m. In an update at 10:45 p.m., police advised that the highway remained closed with no estimated time for reopening. 'Please avoid the area,' OPP said. Authorities clarified that the crash occurred approximately 60 kilometres south of Wawa on Highway 17, just north of Katherine Cove on Saturday. Neither the authorities nor the province's traveller information service indicated that any detours were available during the closure. Police have not released any further details about the victims or if there are any charges pending as a result of the collision. According to 511, Highway 17 reopened shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday morning with OPP saying it cleared the scene shortly before 11 a.m. 'The OPP remains committed to public safety and thanks the community for their cooperation and patience,' said police.
