
Developer plans 130 affordable homes for Croes Atti
The Ffordd Dewi development was originally proposed as a 140 home project, but the full planning application submitted by Anwyl Homes has reduced that number.
On land formerly part of Coed Onn Farm, the proposed development borders the new Croes Atti welsh language school the site. Outside of Flintshire Council's Local Development Plan - it will be made up of 100% affordable housing, with 90% (117 homes) social rent and 10% (13 homes) low cost privately owned.
The plans include a mix of 16 one-bedroom apartments, eight one-bedroom bungalows, four two-bedroom bungalows, 53 two-bedroom houses, 39 three-bedroom houses and 10 four-bedroom houses plus a play area. All properties will have electric car charging points.

A pre-application consultation on the development in November drew opposition from 25 local residents, with concerns raised over water drainage, increased traffic, a single proposed entrance to the estate running past the new Ysgol Croes Atti, ecological damage to Pandy Pool and pressure on local services like GPs and dentists which are already struggling.
Reports included in the application state that there is no significant archaeological value to the site - which is near two known Roman settlements - and there was risk to any protected species.
There is however the remains of an effluent pipe that was part of the infrastructure around the production of mustard gas at Rhydymwyn during World War II. The plans include making sure this pipework is made safe or removed during construction.
To aid with drainage there will be a number of swales - scooped grass verges that collect and slowly drain surface water away, plus two balancing ponds to collect excess water.
Documents submitted by Anwyl to support their application stated: "The development will provide 130 new affordable homes with a range of house types to create a balanced community.
"There is a genuine and acute need for the proposed affordable homes
"The development will create a high quality, inclusive and sustainable residential neighbourhood which maintains and enhances the key existing landscape features, integrating the site into the wider area."

The property, known as Mansion House, was commissioned in 1865 by James Howell, the businessman behind Howell's department store. According to the listing, the house's unusual entrance was a special request by Mr Howell, who wanted to allow the building to be split in two for future generations. In recent years, the building has been used by Cardiff Council and is currently licensed for civil ceremonies and weddings. Mansion House has also appeared in the television series Doctor Who. The property is now up for sale, with offers invited for a freehold sale on an unconditional basis. Savills' Ted Harding-Brown describes Mansion House as 'one of our city's most historically rich buildings' and suggests it could be converted for a range of uses, including a boutique hotel, nursery, health or education facility, or returned to use as a family home. On the ground floor, period features remain, including the entrance hall leading to a dining room and drawing room. There is a fully fitted kitchen and a reception room previously used for formal ceremonies. The first floor includes the former lord mayor's suite with a linked bedroom, lounge, and drawing room. Several bedrooms with en suites are located at the front of the house, with two additional wings at the rear. One wing contains two en-suite bedrooms, while the other has three smaller rooms, including a kitchen. The attic floor has eight rooms and two bathrooms, and the basement offers office space and storage.

Pupils in Wales show progress in reading and maths skills
New statistics from the 2023/24 academic year show improvements in English reading, Welsh reading, and numeracy across Wales. English reading attainment rose in all year groups compared to 2022/23, with Year 3 pupils performing better than in both 2020/21 and 2021/22. Welsh reading also saw gains across Years 3 to 9, while numeracy (procedural) showed the most improvement among younger pupils. Numeracy (reasoning) remained stable. Lynne Neagle, cabinet secretary for education, said: "It is encouraging to see progress in attainment in reading and numeracy. "This improvement highlights the impact our investments are making in schools to ensure every learner has the opportunity to reach their full potential." The data comes from anonymised results of the national personalised assessments, which are adaptive online tools used to measure pupil progress in reading and numeracy. Personalised assessments aim to support learning by identifying strengths and areas for development. Trystan Phillips, headteacher at Ysgol Gymunedol Penparc in Ceredigion, said the school has changed how it uses the assessments. Mr Phillips said: "We have evolved in our use of the personalised assessments to move away from their use as a summative resource to being a resource that truly influences progress. "They're very much now a device to support pupil progress." Owen Evans, Estyn's chief inspector, said the tools help teachers tailor support and track learning. Mr Evans said: "Personalised assessments are a useful tool for schools. "They enable teachers to tailor support for individual pupils and track progress over time. "We are pleased to see some improvement, but schools need to work together to support attainment, and ensure there is a relentless focus on improving reading and mathematics for all learners."

Swansea University achieved its highest ever score in the prestigious QS list while Cardiff climbed five places. They buck the trend with most of the UK universities listed dropping down the ranks. The best UK university was named as Imperial College London which kept its place as second best on the planet after Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. Of the 90 British universities on the score sheet 54 fell. Edinburgh plunged seven places to 34th, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, dropped from 50 to 56. After a tough year with deep cuts and job losses Cardiff University was ranked 181 on the list, up five places compared to last year and 26th best in the UK, although not its best ever QS score. Swansea University at 292 achieved its best ever ranking on the list and is up one place on last year. A Swansea University spokesperson said: "This marks consistent growth over the past five years, with Swansea advancing 182 places since 2021, when it was ranked 474th. Cardiff achieved an overall point score of 57.8 while Swansea had a 46.2 score for these. Swansea said its success in the latest score was driven by strong performances in international students, sustainability and employer and academic reputation. Cardiff said it saw improvement in areas including international research network, faculty student ratio and employment outcomes. Professor Paul Boyle, vice-chancellor of Swansea University, said: 'This year's QS ranking is a clear reflection of Swansea University's growing global reputation and a testament to the excellence and outstanding dedication of our staff. Rising to 292nd place and maintaining a position in the world's top 300 for the second consecutive year is a significant achievement, of which we are justifiably proud. 'This accomplishment underscores the strength of our academic reputation, the diversity of our international community and our growing impact in key areas such as sustainability. Across the top UK instutions Oxford and Cambridge both fell one place each to rank fourth and sixth respectively, Bristol University climbed three places to 51 with an overall score of 82.5, Birmingam was 76th place with an overall score of 73.8, Exeter was ranked 155 on the list and the University of the West of England (UWE) was ranked at between 721 and 730th place.
