Headingley is a beautiful conglomeration of the old and the new. Since the turn of the 20th century, this historic homeground of the Yorkshire cricket team has experienced the ebbs and flows of some memorable Test matches.
On a sun-soaked Friday afternoon, a packed house, which included the likes of the legendary Dickie Bird and Geoffrey Boycott among others, enjoyed the emergence of an Indian team that's ready to carve a new path without trashing the old rulebook.

have worked their way into stardom territory for a while now. But grinding out tough runs on a first-day Headingley pitch can help a cricketer take the first steps towards greatness, and the massively talented India duo wasn't ready to let the chance pass.
While Jaiswal's fifth Test century with a quickly taken single just before tea helped him complete the feat in his first chance in the country, Gill's sixth was a terrific mix of style and caution.

G
ill became only the fourth Indian to score a century in his maiden Test innings as captain. The twin tons helped India to build a solid platform of 359-3 at stumps, which should allow them to control the Test match from here on.
Strong start at long last
India have struggled with their opening partnerships in the last two Test series, but Friday was Jaiswal and his partner KL Rahul's turn to get things back in order.
England's opening attack of Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes lacked a bit of teeth, but it needed a lot of mental discipline to survive the first hour on a pitch that had a bit of grass on it.
There was no rush in the approach of Jaiswal and Rahul. They were ready to be patient and leave a lot of deliveries outside the off-stump.
It's all the more creditable because last month around this time, both were fighting hard to take their IPL franchises to the playoffs.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
There was hardly a false shot during the course of their 24.5-over vigil, but that doesn't mean that Rahul and Jaiswal were merely playing for survival. The occasional loose ball was promptly dealt with and the 91-run partnership was just the start India were looking for. Rahul (42), though, will probably rue the drive that he tried close to lunch off a full Carse delivery to give a catch at first slip.
The only disappointment for India on the day was debutant Sai Sudharsan, batting at No. 3, getting caught behind down leg for a duck. The dismissal came close to lunch, and England sniffed blood. But then Gill walked in.
Captain takes charge
As a few clouds started hovering above Headingley at the beginning of the second session, the four-pronged English pace attack might have harboured hopes of a change in fortunes.
But Gill (batting on 127) and Jaiswal (101) were absolutely flawless during the course of the two-hour session.
Gill, in his previous exploits in England, had often been dismissed in his attempt to play away from the body or across the line early on in his innings. On Friday, the new king of Indian cricket was determined that he would not repeat the mistakes.
Yashasvi Jaiswal credits Shubman Gill after maiden Test ton in England: 'I love it'
The England attack did make the mistake of bowling on both sides of the wicket, but there was class and discipline written all over Gill's effort. Some of Gill's trademark off-side punches, with the bat coming down straight, were an absolute treat to watch.
Jaiswal, at the other end, kept closing in on his century. Into his 90s, cramps in his arms could have affected the left-hander but he showed resolve to battle through the difficult phase. The celebration — a mixture of joy and relief — showed how much it meant for the young man.
Jaiswal was finally dismissed by a Ben Stokes beauty that left the left-hander after pitching, but the 129-run partnership had allowed India to go into cruise mode by then.
With the pitch completely easing out and the ball getting older, Gill and Rishabh Pant (65 batting), walking in at No. 5, didn't have much difficulty in piling on England's woes.
Gill completed his ton with an off-drive and with the bowlers tiring, it was his turn to put his white-ball cap on. The adventurous cross-bat shots that make Gill such a threat were on display as England stared at a long grind to make a match of it over the next four days.

Duckett, Pope rebuild as Eng reach 107/1 at Tea

Leeds, June 21 (UNI) England went to Tea on Day 2 at 107 for 1 in 24 overs, with Ben Duckett (53*) and Ollie Pope (48*) steering a strong reply after an early blow from Jasprit Bumrah. Trailing India by 364 runs, the hosts showed resilience on a surface that remained friendly for batting despite morning clouds and post-lunch drizzle. India, resuming with purpose, built on a dominant fourth-wicket stand between Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Pant lit up the innings with a stroke-filled 134, his seventh Test century, equaling MS Dhoni's tally for most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper. Gill contributed, and their partnership was worth 200 runs off 287 balls, helping India post an imposing 471 all out in 113 overs. Extras contributed a generous 27 runs. However, England's response was not without early nerves. Bumrah struck in his first over, dismissing Zak Crawley with a classic outswinger that found the edge, safely pouched by Karun Nair at slip. But thereafter, both Duckett and Pope played with positive intent and controlled aggression. The pair survived two big chances off Bumrah — Pope edging through the vacant fourth slip early in his innings, and Duckett dropped by Ravindra Jadeja at backward point on 15. Capitalising on their reprieves, they built a 103-run unbeaten stand, keeping India's attack at bay under floodlights and against a Dukes ball. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna proved less threatening, going for over 4 and 6 an over respectively, as the English duo milked the gaps and rotated strike with ease. Despite a brief rain interruption after lunch, conditions continued to favour the batsmen. As the final session of Day 2 begins, England trail by 364 runs, but with two well-set batsmen at the crease and a docile pitch, they look to continue their fightback deep into the evening. Michael Vaughan, your predictions. They're always wrong. Look at your bowling attack. They're pedestrians. I mean, three of the Indian batsmen are stepping out and hitting them like spinners. Rishabh Pant's Unique Six-Hitting Stat In Record-Breaking Innings At Leeds

Rishabh Pant broke multiple records en rout to scoring his seventh century. India's Rishabh Pant surpassed MS Dhoni for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test cricket, achieving his seventh century on the second day of the series opener against England. Pant hit a six off the first ball of the 100th over in India's first innings, clearing the fence off Shoaib Bashir to reach the milestone. This was his first century since September 2024, when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had accumulated 4,876 runs with six centuries and 33 fifties, averaging 38.09. During this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12 fours, 6 sixes), Pant also completed 3,000 runs in 44 Tests, boasting 15 fifties and an average of nearly 44. He remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Wriddhiman Saha is third on this list with two centuries, followed by Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer, who also have two each. Nayan Mongia has scored one century. Pant's 6-Hitting Record The wicket-keeper-batter achieved a remarkable feat in a Test innings in England by hitting six sixes, the highest number by a visiting batter in the sport's history. This accomplishment also places him as the joint-second-highest scorer by an Indian in a Test innings away from home, behind Hardik Pandya's seven against Sri Lanka in 2017. Rishabh Pant 's innings of 134 runs is the second-highest by a wicketkeeper at Headingley, only behind Jonny Bairstow's 140 against Sri Lanka in 2016. Pant's notable achievement of hitting a century with a six has become a hallmark of his Test career. He has achieved this remarkable feat three times in Tests, all against England. His first century with a six was against Adil Rashid at The Oval in 2018, followed by Joe Root in Ahmedabad in 2021, and Shoaib Bashir in Leeds. Among Indian batsmen, only Sachin Tendulkar (six) and Rohit Sharma (three) are around Pant's numbers. Since 2002, Pant has been the only batter to hit a six to complete his hundred more frequently than any other player. Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Kumar Sangakkara, Rohit Sharma, and Kusal Mendis have also achieved this feat three times during this period.
