
Nyamai Sarawak Gastronomy Festival returns this July 26-27 at SCV

KUCHING (May 17): The Nyamai Sarawak Gastronomy Festival returns this year on a larger scale from July 26 to 27 at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) near here.
This special Sarawak Day edition of the festival is expected to attract at least 20,000 visitors and will feature 200 carefully selected vendors across seven key categories.
Minister for Women, Family, and Community Development Dato Sri Nancy Shukri said the festival, which began as a small celebration of Sarawak's culinary heritage, has now grown into a true reflection of Sarawakian identity.
'Nyamai is more than just food. It represents who we are – our heritage, creativity, and the spirit of the Sarawakian community.
'We must continue to preserve and elevate this culinary heritage, not only for ourselves but for the world,' she told a press conference here today.
Nancy also recalled Kuching's recognition as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy in December 2021 – a significant achievement that now comes with the responsibility of preserving and promoting Sarawak's culinary heritage on an international scale.
She said this year, Kuching City of Gastronomy and the Unesco Creative Cities Network (UCCN) remain strategic partners for Nyamai.
This includes the prestigious Nyamai Awards, which recognises individuals and organisations contributing significantly to the creative, sustainable, and authentic advancement of Sarawak's food culture.
Among the highlights of the Nyamai Sarawak Gastronomy Festival 2025 are traditional food demonstrations, craft art workshops, live music performances, cultural showcases, family-friendly activities, and interactive zones that display Sarawak's culinary diversity.
Additionally, an exclusive '2 Days 1 Night Nyamai' accommodation package has been introduced in collaboration with Damai Beach Resort, Damai Lagoon Resort, and Permai Rainforest Resort.
Moreover, an icon design competition has been launched in conjunction with the festival, where the winner will receive a cash prize of RM5,000, and their design will be turned into a permanent sculpture at SCV.
Nancy also encouraged local entrepreneurs in the food, craft, beauty, and lifestyle sectors to participate as vendors and sponsors.
'This is the best platform to showcase your products to 20,000 visitors,' she said, adding that registration is available through the official website www.nyamai.com.
Entrance to the festival will be free, and visitors can redeem their passes via Nyamai Sarawak's official Facebook and Instagram pages.
Also present at the press conference were SCV chief executive officer Jane Lian Labang, UCCN director Karen Shepherd, Damai Lagoon Resort and Damai Beach Resort general manager Anthony Lasong, Permai Rainforest Resort general manager Nazrul Nasihin, and Carus Sport & Event director Gordan Chung.

The 24-year-old culinary talent wowed judges with his innovative take on the beloved Sarawak Laksa, reimagining the iconic dish with a daring twist of dark chocolate and coconut cheese. 'I am very surprised and happy to be named this year's champion,' he said when met at the closing ceremony of the World National Tapas and World Asia Tapas Competition Exhibition and Seminar 2025 held at KTS Garden here today. 'It is an honour, and I am really proud of myself, especially since this is my first time ever participating in a cooking competition.' What made Liew's Sarawak Laksa stand out was not just its bold reinterpretation, but the respect he retained for the dish's traditional flavours. 'I stayed true to the traditional flavour of the laksa, but reimagined it in a more modern tapas style,' he said. 'I added dark chocolate to balance the spices, and fermented coconut 'santan' to make coconut cheese.' The result was a nostalgic and comforting yet inventive bite – a tribute to his Sarawakian roots infused with a refreshing touch of innovation. 'For me, Sarawak Laksa is a flavour I always crave for when I miss home. It really comforts me,' said the chef, who is currently based in Kuala Lumpur. Second place went to Chef Jack Owen Atit from Kuching's Kyujin restaurant, who brought his heritage and culinary experience into the spotlight through a dish inspired by 'kasam', a traditional method of indigenous fermentation. The 36-year-old's creation, 'Golden Gem', is shaped into a delicate golden ball, which features Kasam Wagyu at its core while coated with lacto-fermented Terung Dayak. 'The Golden Gem represents our indigenous vegetable Terung Dayak, otherwise known as Terung Asam, which is not really well-known outside of Sarawak. 'So, I wanted to let people know that there are many ways we can use this native vegetable,' he explained. Rather than serving the Terung Dayak, known for its distinctive sour taste, in the typical soup or stew, Jack turned the humble native ingredient into a sophisticated, cold dish that surprised the judges. 'I wanted to highlight how fermentation has always been a part of our way of preserving food long before the existence of refrigerators. Held from 10am to 2pm at KTS Garden, the high-stakes national tapas showdown gave each chef 25 minutes to prepare eight portions of their signature creations to earn a spot to represent Malaysia at the World Tapas Championship in Spain this November. The judging panel featured well-known chefs Michelle Goh, the youngest Malaysian woman to earn a Michelin star for her pastries; Jasbir Kaur, global culinary leader and founder of the Australasia Tapas Competition; Alex Ting, former head of Michelin-selected restaurant Alma in Shanghai and founder of Kyujin in Kuching; and Goh Ah Seng, Hall of Fame inductee for Cantonese Cuisine and chairman of Persatuan Tukang Masak How Yu Kuching. Chef Zulhizan Sapawi fused bold flavours with local textures, crafting a sago flour-based tapas mixed with coconut and filled with prawns and a creamy, cheesy Sarawak laksa core. It was served with a kantan lemongrass gel and paired with a rich prawn Sarawak laksa sauce. 20 Sarawakian chefs to vie for spot at World Tapas Championship in Spain

The competition, part of the World National and Asia Tapas Competitions, runs from June 17 to 19 and is being hosted in Kuching for the second consecutive year. According to organising chairwoman and Sarawak International Technical and Vocational Education Association (SITVEA) president Sim Ling Ling, the national winner will earn an all-expenses-paid trip to Valladolid, Spain, to compete on the global stage. Sim highlighted the inclusive nature of the competition, noting that both young aspiring chefs and veterans with decades of experience are taking part. 'There's no age barrier in this industry. What matters is your story, your creativity, and how you bring your culture to the plate. 'Like last year's winner, who created 'Rolo de Umai' ― a Sarawakian dish that made it to the world stage and was judged by Michelin-star chefs in France and the United States,' she told reporters after the opening ceremony. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Minister of Tourism, Events, and City Branding Of Valladolid City Council, Spain, Blanca Jimenez Cuadrillero were also present at the opening ceremony. Sim also confirmed that Sarawak will remain the official host of the Asia qualifier in the coming years, with plans to rotate the venue across cities such as Miri to encourage broader participation. 'We also hope to establish a closer partnership with Valladolid, Spain, where the World Tapas Championship is held annually. 'It's a Unesco Creative City with a rich cultural and culinary background, similar to ours in many ways,' she added. The three-day event features food and beverage exhibitions, workshops on sustainability ― including carbon-neutral food production and eco-friendly packaging ― as well as talks by international speakers from China, Indonesia, and Malaysia on halal compliance, food safety, and recycling. 'The idea is to promote not only culinary creativity but also environmental awareness. 'We want participants and visitors to understand how the food industry can innovate while staying sustainable,' Sim said. Exhibitors include international names such as Farina Winery from Spain and braised lion-headed goose with over 100 years of history from China, with representatives flown in to share the stories behind their products. 'There's a story behind every dish and every ingredient, and by bringing in the people behind the products, we give a platform for deeper appreciation and cultural exchange,' she added.
