Kerry GAA to recruit full-time commercial director to ‘generate substantial revenue growth'

On Tuesday, Kerry GAA publicly advertised the new position, with Red Chair Recruitment in Killarney handling the process.
The job specification says the commercial director will 'create and implement a commercial strategy that focuses on new fundraising models, including grant applications as well as identifying, developing and implementing new commercial opportunities to generate substantial revenue growth.'
The chosen candidate will work alongside the Kerry County Board Executive, and be responsible for asset management and new developments at the Centre of Excellence in Currans and other new developments across the county to ensure best outcome for Kerry GAA.
Kerry GAA has an annual turnover of several million euros, with overall income of €4.6m in 2024 and total expenditure of €4.1m the same year.
Commercial income accounted for almost €1.3m of that total. Fundraising income in 2024 accounted for just €148,000 – down from €401,000 the year before, although that was because of €245,000 for the player holiday fund in 2023 because Kerry reached the All-Ireland final.
In his report to convention last December, Kerry GAA treasurer Paudie Healy told delegates: 'Our commercial income for 2024 has reached an impressive €1,286,676, marking a significant increase of 11.8% over 2023. This robust growth reflects the strength of our partnerships and the unwavering support of our sponsors.
'While we celebrate these achievements, it is imperative that we intensify efforts to grow commercial income on all fronts – locally, nationally, and internationally. As the demands on our resources and facilities will continue to expand, Kerry GAA must remain a trailblazer on and off the field. To ensure we maintain our leadership and drive future success, we must aggressively pursue new opportunities, strengthen existing partnerships, and extend our reach globally.'
Mr Healy also told delegates that while his 'commitment to delivering the best financial management practices for Kerry GAA remains unwavering, it must be noted, as operational demands increase, so too will the need for skilled personnel and additional resources. These efforts will ensure that Kerry GAA continues to uphold best practices in financial governance.'
Kerry GAA's full-time secretary, Peter Twiss, echoed Mr Healy's comment when Mr Twiss told delegated: 'Fundraising and commercial activity continues to play an ever-increasing role in the workings of the Board. As will be evident in our County Strategic Plan, the need to take on a full-time commercial person would, I believe, be a necessary next step.
'How this works alongside a voluntary led Board will require some thought, but it is obvious that the demands on the volunteer in this most important of areas is too much and very dependent on people having time and skill to build up a coherent and effective structure.'

It would seem that the new full-time commercial director will be tasked with taking some of the strain off the treasurer and finance committee with regard to increasing revenue through commercial partnerships, sponsorship and fundraising.
Speaking on the recruitment process, Kerry GAA chairperson Patrick O'Sullivan said: 'This is an exciting opportunity for someone to shape the future of Kerry GAA. We are seeking someone to work alongside our County Board to manage asset development and new projects at our Centre of Excellence and other locations across the county.
'We are looking for someone who is motivated and passionate about Kerry GAA with entrepreneurial leadership, organisational skills, and knowledge in business, finance, fundraising, and sponsorship.
'We see this role as an opportunity for Kerry GAA to increase commercial activities to generate substantial revenue growth, improve facilities and resources, and integrate the Kerry Ladies Football Association and Kerry Camogie. For the right person, this is an opportunity not only play a part in the future of Kerry GAA across the county but to help shape it.'
The position is for a fixed-term contract of three years, with the remuneration package offering a base salary, performance related commission, pension, company car, and paid expenses and flexible working options.

A judge has imposed a €2,600 penalty on a sunbed business for selling a session to a minor. In the case before Ennis District Court, Judge Alec Gabbett imposed a €1,000 fine and costs of €1,600 on Solcraft Ltd for selling a sunbed session to a girl (15) at its premises Cosmopoli Tan in Shannon, Co Clare , last year. It came after a 'secret shopper' was deployed by the Health Service Executive (HSE) to do a test purchase in Cosmopoli Tan at Unit 7, Block E, Bru Na Sionna, Shannon, on November 26th, 2024. Barry Kelleher, solicitor for the HSE, told the court that on the date 'a 15-year-old child attended at the salon and approached the counter and asked for use of sunbed session'. READ MORE Mr Kelleher said 'the child asked for three minutes of time and she was told that she could get four minutes for the price of three'. Mr Kelleher said the child 'was never asked for her age or ID'. He said the firm has no previous convictions, that the transaction took place and the child left the premises. Solicitor for the firm, John Casey, said the business has a number of notices placed across its premises saying 'No ID, no sunbed'. Mr Kelleher said there was a further inspection of the premises in April this year as there was a report of underage sales continuing. Mr Casey said on that date the company was found to be in compliance. Mr Kelleher said the test purchasers deployed by the HSE don't actually take the sunbed sessions. 'You would need danger money to do that,' the judge said. Mr Kelleher told the court that people aged under 35 who use sunbeds increase their risk of developing melanoma by 75 per cent. The judge said 'children should not be in these premises – that is very straightforward' and he imposed the €1,000 fine as a deterrent to ensure compliance. Asked about the level of enforcement activity under the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act, a HSE spokesman said last month: 'In 2024, 10 fixed payment notices were served and four prosecutions taken by the National Environmental Health Service under the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014. 'Two of the prosecutions were for sales to minors and both were upheld by the court.'

Ger Brennan says he's twice seen his Louth outfit on the receiving end of decisions against sides - but he's confident that won't happen against Donegal at Ballybofey tomorrow with Barry Cassidy in charge. Derry official Cassidy will take charge of the MacCumhaill Park All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final tie with the winner going to Croke Park next weekend and the loser's season over. Brennan, speaking to LMFM, outlined that Louth's Division 2 loss to Donegal last year at Ballyshannon and their All-Ireland group stage defeat by Kerry at Portlaoise later that season were games he felt the Wee County were hard done by. The match official for the Donegal game was Roscommon's Paddy Neilan, while the Kerry game was refereed by Conor Lane of Cork. 'I certainly rarely would whinge about referee's decisions as players have to be accountable for their own errors first and foremost and referees are only human,' said Brennan. 'There were certainly a lot of hometown decisions awarded in that league game in Ballyshannon last year. 'In looking towards this game in Ballybofey, in one way it's interesting that a Derry referee has been appointed to look after the game. 'But when I heard it's Barry Cassidy, you are confident with someone with Barry Cassidy's experience that he is not going to be overawed consciously or subconsciously by the Ballybofey crowd and that he will give Louth a fair crack of the whip. Minimum pay for childcare workers to rise to €15 an hour

Childcare workers will earn a minimum of €15 an hour under proposals jointly agreed by employers and unions. The Joint Labour Committee, which is made up of childcare providers and unions representing childcare staff, have agreed the minimum hourly raise rate from €13.65 to €15 an hour, an increase of 10 per cent. Some 35,000 people work in the childcare sector in Ireland. The new pay agreement will be underpinned by an extra €45 million provided to the sector by the Government. The proposals will now go to those childcare staff that are unionised, but Siptu has recommended approval. Our goal is to ensure the continued sustainability of a high-quality early childhood education and care sector,' a spokesperson said. 'Any further increases in wages must be fully supported by Government funding, as the ongoing fee freeze and the incoming fee caps significantly limit providers' ability to absorb additional costs.' Minister for Children Norma Foley said the 10 per cent increase in minimum pay represents a 'significant step' towards fair pay for educators in the sector. 'I am hopeful that these proposals will soon come into effect, marking a positive change for our dedicated and skilled staff in the early learning and childcare sector and the services that employ them.'
