Stock losses accelerate on Israel-Iran attacks — plus, the latest on Amazon, Meta and Apple

CNBC13-06-2025

Every weekday, the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer releases the Homestretch — an actionable afternoon update, just in time for the last hour of trading on Wall Street. Markets: Wall Street moved lower Friday afternoon as tensions in the Middle East escalate following Israel's attack on Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Iranian state TV said that it has suspended nuclear weapons negotiations with the U.S. — the two sides had been set to talk on Sunday. Not long afterward, as headlines around Iranian missile attacks in Israel surfaced, losses in the stock market picked up steam. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped nearly 2%, leading to the downside, while both the S & P 500 and Nasdaq fell more than 1%. Meanwhile, oil prices spiked on the news, though the gains have moderated compared with where they were in overnight trading. Brent crude, the international benchmark, surged 7% to above $74 a barrel. U.S. oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude also popped 7%, trading close to $73 a barrel. As Investing Club Portfolio Analyst Zev Fima wrote earlier this afternoon , our approach right now is to sit on our hands and not make any dramatic moves to the portfolio. "So as we approach what could be a weekend packed full of fear-inducing geopolitical headlines, we have to do that most difficult of things: nothing," he wrote. Medical shuffle: Club name Amazon is reorganizing its health-care business into six new units "with the goal of creating a simpler structure," our CNBC colleagues Annie Palmer and Ashley Capoot reported Friday. Here are a few excerpts from their story, though we recommend reading it in full : "Our leadership team has been focused on simplifying our structure to move faster and continue to innovate effectively," [Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services] said in a video chat. "One of the problems we're trying to solve is the fragmented experience for patients and customers that's common in healthcare." .... Amazon declined to share financial figures for its health business, but Lindsay said it is seeing "very strong growth" across the offerings. As long-term investors in Amazon, we remain intrigued by its ambitions in the massive health-care industry, particularly using its logistics prowess on the prescription drug delivery side. The acquisition of One Medical, a primary care provider, also was a big deal — and at the company's annual shareholder meeting in late May, CEO Andy Jassy said he was "very excited" about how its One Medical subscription is "continuing to grow." But in general, health care does seem to have been a tougher nut to crack than perhaps some expected. That's why Friday's report caught our eye because it shows Amazon is looking for ways to make progress and not being complacent with its organizational structures. Still, as of now, it's not a major needle-mover compared with the e-commerce, advertising and cloud-computing divisions. Meta's move: The founder of Scale AI, Alexandr Wang, confirmed that he's departing the startup to join Club name Meta Platforms , part of the Instagram parent's bold move to stay on the leading edge of artificial intelligence. When we wrote Wednesday about Meta investing nearly $15 billion to take a 49% stake in Scale AI, we were under the impression that Wang would join Meta's new "superintelligence" unit on top of his duties at the data-labeling startup. That is not the case. The new revelation underscores the aggressiveness of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg amid concerns that some of its AI technology was lagging in performance. Wang is well-known within the tech industry as a bright mind on AI — he founded Scale AI before he was 20 years old — and talent along with computing resources is very important in the AI race. Apple shipments: Rounding out these updates on Big Tech names, Reuters reported that 97% of the iPhones exported from India by manufacturer Foxconn went to the U.S. during the March-to-May period. That is a dramatic increase from the roughly 50% export rate in 2024, Reuters said, citing customs data. The reporting is a clear indication of Apple's strategy to navigate President Donald Trump's tariffs by relying less on China, which faces a much-higher duty rate than India. Up next: It's a quite week of earnings within the portfolio, though Lennar and Darden Restaurants are set to report on Monday and Friday, carrying implications for Club names Home Depot and Texas Roadhouse , respectively. Jabil, La-Z-Boy, GMS, Smith and Wesson Brands, Kroger, Accenture, and CarMax also report. The Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates and latest economic projections arrive on Wednesday. On the economic calendar, the latest numbers on retail sales and import/export prices are due out Tuesday morning, followed by initial jobless claims on Wednesday morning. Next Friday and into the weekend, the American Diabetes Associations' Scientific Sessions takes place, and Club name Eli Lilly will be there with updates. Investors should consider this growth stock… it's SpaceX's competition

Rocket Lab (NASDAQ:RKLB) is a US-listed growth stock that gives investors rare access to the commercial space sector. As a vertically integrated launch and space systems provider, Rocket Lab is often compared to SpaceX in its ambition and capabilities. But there's one crucial difference: you can actually buy shares in Rocket Lab, while SpaceX remains private. Rocket Lab delivers launch services, builds small and medium-class rockets, and manufactures spacecraft components for a range of commercial, government, and defense customers. With rapid revenue growth, an impressive order book, and expansion into new markets, Rocket Lab offers public market investors a way to participate in the booming space economy. It targets many of the same opportunities as its more famous, privately held peer. Rocket Lab and SpaceX operate in the same commercial space sector but differ significantly in scale, maturity, and valuation. Rocket Lab's market cap is currently $12.85bn, with trailing 12 months (TTM) revenue of approximately $460m. Despite strong growth — revenue nearly doubled from $240m in 2023 — Rocket Lab remains a smaller, earlier-stage player focused on small to medium launch vehicles and spacecraft manufacturing. Its valuation multiples are extremely high, with a forward price-to-sales ratio of 22.3 times, reflecting investor optimism. SpaceX, by contrast, is a far more mature private company valued at about $350bn. It's projected to generate $15.5bn in revenue in 2025. This is driven by its dominant Falcon 9 launch services and rapidly growing Starlink satellite internet business. SpaceX's valuation implies roughly a 22.5 times multiple on forward revenue. This is broadly in line with Rocket Lab. Focusing on Rocket Lab, the company is projected to deliver rapid revenue growth over the next several years, with estimates rising from $573m in 2025 to $889 in 2026, $1.2bn in 2027, and $1.69bn in 2028. This represents annual growth rates consistently above 30%, and even a jump of nearly 77% in 2030. However, the number of analysts providing forecasts declines sharply after 2027, dropping from 11–14 analysts in the near term to just two or one by 2028 and 2030. The one analyst projecting as far as 2030 sees $4bn in revenue for the year. I had the chance to buy Rocket Lab shares at $15 just two months ago. I missed out as unfortunately my attention had been diverted elsewhere. However, I found another entry point. And personally, I see this as an investment to hold for a very long period. The space industry is still in its early innings, with enormous potential as satellite launches, lunar missions, and in-orbit services become increasingly mainstream. And like any investment, there are risks. Rocket Lab remains loss-making. It's expected to turn a profit in 2026, when it will trade at 620 times earnings. And while this moderates to 140 times in 2027, it's still expensive and introduces plenty of execution risk. However, I certainly believe UK investors should consider this one. It could be a real winner going forward. The post Investors should consider this growth stock… it's SpaceX's competition appeared first on The Motley Fool UK. Here are 10 stocks Goldman Sachs expects to be winners after a wild first half for the market

Goldman Sachs just updated one of its stock baskets with its picks for the highest risk-adjusted returns. The basket has outperformed the S&P 500 so far this year, gaining 3% year-to-date. The S&P 500's overall risk-adjusted return has been lower than usual so far this year, strategists said. It's been a volatile year for stock traders, but there are a handful of new winners in the S&P 500 that could be poised for big gains over the next 12 months, according to Goldman Sachs. In a note to clients on Friday, the bank said it updated its Sharpe Ratio basket, a list of 50 stocks with the highest expected risk-adjusted returns. So far, the basket has gained 3% year-to-date, edging past the S&P 500's 1.7% gain. The S&P 500's overall risk-adjusted return has been "lower than usual" so far in 2025, the strategists said, pointing to increased volatility and lower-than-average returns stemming from fears around tariffs. The bank rebalanced its portfolio by choosing stocks with a high prospective Sharpe Ratio, a gauge for risk-adjusted returns calculated by dividing a percentage return to a stock's consensus 12-month price target by its six-month option-implied volatility. "Currently, the median S&P 500 stock is expected to post an 11% return to its 12-month consensus price target with a 6-month implied volatility of 28, yielding a prospective risk-adjusted return of 0.4," the bank wrote.
