Netherlands sets general election date after government collapse

June 6 (UPI) -- The Netherlands Friday scheduled a snap election for Oct. 29 following the collapse of the government caused by the far-right Party for Freedom leaving the governing coalition.
Outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs Judith Uitermark announced the election date in a post on X.
"In the coming period, I will work with the municipalities and other stakeholders to prepare so that this important day in our democracy goes smoothly!" Uitermark said.
Prime Minister Dick Schoof's four-party governing coalition collapsed when Party for Freedom's leader Geert Wilders demanded radical slashing of migration.
Schoof indicated in a message to lawmakers he will maintain control over critical policies in the months between now and the October election.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's about security, both nationally and internationally, including support for Ukraine and everything that's needed for defense," Schoof said in the statement.
The far-right Party for Freedom quit the Dutch government Tuesday, prompting Schoof to submit his resignation to King Willem-Alexander's cabinet.
Schoof called the move to quit the government "irresponsible and unnecessary."
The current cabinet will stay in place pending the general election to act as a caretaker government.
"Schoof showed that he is not the right man in the right place. If you, as prime minister of a cabinet in which the PVV is the largest party, refuse to sign a letter about a stricter asylum policy and a tougher approach to criminal aliens, then you are unsuitable," Wilders said in a post on X.
The PVV pulled off a shock victory in the November 2023 election gaining more seats than ever before for the far right.
Wilders, an anti-Islamist right-wing politician, tried to parlay the 37 seats his party won into becoming prime minister, but he was forced to abandon that attempt.
There are 150 seats in the Dutch parliament.
The center-left Labor party and Green Left won the second highest number of seats.
Schoof became Prime Minister instead of Wilders, forming a government consisting of the PVV, the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, the New Social Contract and the Farmer-Citizen Movement.
That governing coalition was seated in July 2024.

NC governor vetoes permit-less concealed carry, ICE cooperation
June 21 (UPI) -- North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein vetoed a bill to require state law enforcement to work more closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in addition to another that would allow permit-less concealed carry of firearms. The Democratic governor on Friday announced vetoes of the legislation, which had been approved by both legislative chambers. Stein said the state is already stretched to assist federal officers. "My oath of office requires that I uphold the Constitution of the United States," Stein said. "Therefore, I cannot sign this bill because it would require sheriffs to unconstitutionally detain people for up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released. He noted the federeal Fourth Circuit "is clear that local law enforcement officers cannot keep people in custody solely based on a suspected immigration violation." Stein said he also wants offenders to be held accountable. "Let me be clear, anyone who commits a serious crime in North Carolina must be prosecuted and held accountable regardless of their immigration status." He said he supports the bills' efforts to require sheriffs to contact federal immigration authorities about people in their custody charged with dangerous crimes, including sexual battery, armed robbery, arson, assault on public officials and court personnel. The vetoes were supported by Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers, Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Gary McFadden. Republicans blasted the decision by the governor, who was elected in November. "Gov. Stein proved where his allegiances are," state Senate Leader Phil Berger posted on X. "He'd rather prioritize his far-left donors and their dangerous open-border policies over the citizens of North Carolina who are desperately pleading for us to put an end to the illegal immigration crisis. I look forward to the Senate overriding his veto." Stein also vetoed a bill that would have allowed permitless concealed carry in North Carolina. "This bill makes North Carolinians less safe and undermines responsible gun ownership," Stein said. "The bill eliminates training requirements associated with concealed carry permits and reduces the age to carry a concealed weapon from 21 to 18 years old. "We can and should protect the right to bear arms without recklessly endangering law enforcement officers and our people." Berger criticized the veto of this bill. "Law-abiding North Carolinians shouldn't have to jump through hoops to effectively exercise their Second Amendment rights," the Senate leader said. "It's past time for us to join the majority of states that recognize Constitutional Carry. I look forward to the Senate overriding Gov. Stein's veto." To override a veto, three-fifths of the House and Senate must approve the bills. In the latest election, Democrats broke the Republican supermajority in the House by gaining one seat. Trump announces ‘successful attack' on Iranian nuclear sites
June 21 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump announced successful attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran and said all planes have exited Iranian airspace. Trump announced the military intervention after returning to the White House on Saturday and scheduling a meeting with his national security team on Sunday. He also has scheduled a televised address at 10 p.m. EDT on Saturday. "We have completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz and Eshafan," Trump said in a Truth Social post at 6:50 p.m. EDT. "All planes are safely on their way home," Trump said. "Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the world that could have done this." The U.S. military has moved several B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and refueling aircraft to Guam, which may be a precursor to aerial strikes against Iran's most important nuclear facility. The deployment comes after President Donald Trump announced a two-week pause to allow for potential cease-fire negotiations to end the hostilities between Israel and Iran. Trump also has said the U.S. knows where Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is sheltering but won't target him with a military strike for the time being. Israel has gained aerial superiority in the skies over Iran, but Israel's conventional munitions can't effectively penetrate the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant site in a mountainous area in central Iran, according to reports. B-2 bombers armed with bunker-buster bombs, however, can penetrate the site and the deployment of B-2 bombers and refueling aircraft to Guam raises the potential for eventual U.S. military intervention in Iran. Guam is about 5,900 miles from Tehran, and B-2 bombers have a range of nearly 6,900 miles with a cruising speed of 559 mph, according to the U.S. Air Force. When supported by refueling aircraft, the bombers have plenty of range to target Iran's remaining nuclear facilities, or they could be moved to forward bases that are closer to Iran. Each bomber can carry bomb loads of up to 40,000 pounds, which makes them capable of deploying 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs against the Fordow site. The bunker-buster bombs can penetrate "any mixture of earth, rock and concrete before the bomb itself then explodes" deep beneath the Earth's surface and obliterate a target, cause its support structure to collapse, or both. It's unknown if the B-2s flying to Guam also are carrying bunker-buster bombs or if such munitions might have been shipped there or to other regional bases. Formidable Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant site Iran's Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant is located near Qom in central Iran and about 100 miles south of Tehran. The facility has 3,000 centrifuges that are located about 300 feet beneath the area's mountains, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday said Iran refuses to reduce its nuclear enrichment "under any circumstances," The New York Times reported. Iran is "ready to talk and cooperate" with world leaders but will continue its retaliatory attacks against Israel, Pezeshkian said. The Iranian president's position runs counter to that of Trump's and other U.S. leaders. Trump "hates nuclear proliferation, [and] I hate nuclear proliferation," Vice President JD Vance told attendees at the Munich Leaders Meeting held in Washington, D.C., on May 7. Vance advocated for meeting with Chinese and Russian officials to reduce the number of nuclear arms in the world. "There is no way you get to that conversation if you allow multiple regimes all over the world to ... enter this sprint for a nuclear weapon," Vance said, "If the Iran domino falls, you're going to see nuclear proliferation all over the Middle East," he added. "That's very bad for us. It's very bad for our friends, and it's something that we don't think can happen." Vance asked attendees which nation has "civil nuclear power" but does not also have nuclear weapons. "The answer is: No one," Vance said. "We don't care if people want nuclear power," he said. "But you can't have the kind of enrichment program that allows you to get to a nuclear weapon, and that's where we draw the line." Houthis would resume attacks on U.S. vessels If the U.S. attacks the Fordow site or otherwise intervenes in the war between Israel and Iraq, the Houthis have said they will resume attacks on U.S.-flagged commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea. "Any U.S. aggression or attack in support of the Israeli enemy against Iran serves this goal and therefore cannot go unanswered," the Houthis said in a statement on Saturday. "Remaining silent would mean surrendering the freedom and dignity of the [Iranian] nation and allowing its wealth to be plundered," the statement continued. "This is a battle for the entire nation and a salvation for all its people." The Houthis agreed to stop targeting U.S.-flagged vessels in May after enduring a weeks-long aerial campaign by the U.S. military against Houthi targets in Yemen. European leaders seek 'digital sovereignty' over tech infrastructure

A recent forum discussion on the market dominance of global corporations assessed the "blurring of the boundaries between economic and political control" among European nations by tech firms. A consensus of attendees at the ongoing Berlin Summit 2025 agreed European nations need to coordinate their efforts to develop infrastructures to "avoid path dependencies and long-term dependence on global platform players," Forum New Economy reported on Friday. "European countries are highly dependent on companies from the USA and China in a variety of technological infrastructures, from cloud services and social media to generative artificial intelligence," Forum New Economy reported. Such companies dominate European markets and are increasing their control of digital infrastructures, innovation networks, supply chains, data flows and research agendas. An example is Microsoft earlier this year suspending the business email account for International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan. The action occurred within months of the ICC issuing a warrant for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Although the tech firm suspended Khan's ICC email account, Microsoft officials said it still is providing services for the ICC. The company also announced their intent to support the digital sovereignty of European nations. "We've operated in Europe for more than 40 years, and we have been and always will be a steadfast partner to Europe," Microsoft Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella said in a social media post on Friday. Microsoft is supporting European sovereignty and that of its respective nations with several existing and new tech offerings, Nadella said. The services include Microsoft Sovereign Cloud, Data Guardian, External Key Management and Sovereign Private Cloud. The existing and new offerings "bring digital sovereignty to all European organizations" and"unlock new sovereign ways to run private sovereign clouds," Nadella said. "These new offerings build on decades of pioneering work in sovereign cloud solutions by ourselves and to our partners," he added.
