This is the terrifying moment the engine of a United Airlines passenger jet bursts into flames as it takes off from China.
Dramatic footage shows the US-bound Boeing 777 accelerating along the runway before the right turbofan becomes a ball of fire - forcing the flight to be abandoned.
Officials at Beijing Capital International Airport said that Flight UA889 to San Francisco was cancelled due to a mechanical failure that affected both engines on Monday, May 26.
A frightened passenger aboard the aircraft said: 'I was sitting by the window, half asleep, when the plane took off.
'The nose of the plane should have lifted, and suddenly, the right engine made a noise, and I saw a ball of flame gushing out.'
Another traveller added: 'We saw countless fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and engineering vehicles from the shuttle bus. There were as many as 40 or 50 of them, all flashing different lights.'
Local media reported that all passengers and crew members were safe.
United Airlines confirmed that the flight was cancelled due to a technical malfunction.
Affected passengers were offered complimentary re-booking, with additional travel arrangements still being coordinated.
Fire crews at the airport responded swiftly, dousing the engines with fire-suppressing foam.
The Boeing 777 is designed to operate for approximately 60,000 flight cycles or 20 to 25 years, based on rigorous testing and simulations under in-service conditions.
However, with proper maintenance and regulatory approval, many 777s are expected to safely exceed their original design life.
This comes only months after another United Airlines flight caught on fire.
In February, terrified passengers were told to evacuate a jetliner via slides and stairs at Houston's main airport after the right wing caught fire.
United Airlines flight 1382 to New York City was halted while still on the runway shortly after 8.30am at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, as an engine problem had caused smoke and fire on the wing during take-off.
There were no injuries and passengers were bused back to the terminal, the FAA said.
The take-off was stopped after the Airbus A319 'received an indication about one engine,' the statement said.
This alarming experience came just a month after American Airlines passengers were forced to evacuate their plane when it caught on fire at Denver Airport following mid-air engine trouble.
Shocked passengers were seen fleeing via the wing of the aircraft as smoke billowed from the plane on March 13.
The flight, AA 1006, had departed Colorado Springs Airport at 4:52pm (local time) and was headed to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft was diverted to Denver shortly after takeoff when the crew reported engine vibrations, according to Federal Aviation Administration.
'After landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides,' said the FAA.

Facing disgrace back in China, the brilliant student who stalked top Scots professor for over eight months
A brilliant Chinese student faces returning to China in 'disgrace' after she was found guilty of stalking a professor at St Andrews University. World leading expert Professor Thomas Kelsey was advised by police to sneak in and out of the university using fire exits to avoid obsessed Ruixue Zhang. Disgruntled Zhang, 29, tried to bribe him to let her continue studying at the university by lavishing unwanted gifts upon him, including a portrait she had drawn. She even had to be huckled off the university grounds by security staff on several occasions, with the stressed professor eventually being forced to spend more time working from home to avoid her. Dundee Sheriff Court heard Zhang 'wouldn't take no for an answer' and continued to turn up at Professor Kelsey's work, as well as bombarding him with emails begging to be given a PhD place. She continued the campaign of harassment for eight months despite admitting in one of her 'polite' emails that she was causing annoyance and may be breaking the law. Zhang, whose address was given as Dundee Backpackers hostel, was found guilty of stalking Professor Kelsey at the university from 1 March to 25 October last year. Her solicitor Billy Watt asked the court to grant an absolute discharge - meaning she would have no conviction on her record - to avoid 'disgrace' upon her return to China. Mr Watt said: 'She is someone with a potentially exceptionally bright future ahead of her in the field she operates in. The consequences of a conviction here would be disproportionately severe and irreversible. 'A conviction would jeopardise her immigration status and perhaps lead to her removal from the UK, and exclusion from employment in the field in which she studies. 'It would have a devastating effect after years of academic effort and expense and it could impact her future travel and education prospects. It would leave her with an incredible stigma. 'She travelled from China to Scotland, to some extent as a rising star, and she would return to China as a criminal following her time at St Andrews University. 'The impact of that would be absolutely devastating. This could have an impact on the entirety of this young lady's life. The impact of going back to China in disgrace would be devastating.' However, Sheriff Neil Kinnear turned down the request and fined Zhang £300 as well as banning her from approaching or contacting her victim for the next two years. He said: 'I understand why you make that submission and I agree it is a very unusual, unfortunate and rather sad case. But I take account of the persistence of it over a period of time and that it had a substantial effect on the university and Professor Kelsey. 'He was quite candid that he never felt there was any physical threat and the contact had always been polite and respectful, but it was the persistence over a prolonged period which caused him - after consulting with security and police - to work from home.' The court heard Zhang completed a Masters in Computer Science and was desperate to remain under the tutelage of Professor Kelsey, who is recognised as a leading authority on computer modelling of human fertility, both for the healthy population and for survivors of childhood cancer. She regularly turned up uninvited for weekly PhD student meetings after being told that her application had been refused as there was no space for more students. On at least three occasions, she had to be told to leave the university campus by security as she was no longer a student and had no right to be there. In one email, frustrated Professor Kelsey told Zhang not to contact him again in what the court heard was an unusually blunt tone from him, as he didn't know what else to do by that point. The professor told the court the stalking campaign had affected his work life and also his personal life. In a July email, Zhang wrote: 'I regret my behaviour has disturbed you and had an impact on your work. In the UK this can be seen as impolite and in serious cases may even violate the law.' In her evidence, Zhang claimed she had been offered a PhD place but returned from a trip to China to find it had been withdrawn. University staff told the court her PhD application was rejected in February 2024. Zhang, runner-up at the Chinese national Maths Olympiad in 2015, was found guilty of causing fear or alarm by stalking Professor Kelsey. She presented him with unwanted gifts, tried to induce him to supervise her studies, tried to induce other people to approach and contact him on her behalf, and repeatedly approach him in person and by email after being told not to. Sheriff Kinnear told her: 'Your whole conduct was such that a reasonable person might expect it would cause them fear or alarm. I am satisfied it caused him alarm.'

Woman aged in her 50s dies following Newry house fire
A woman aged in her 50s has died following a house fire in Newry. Police received a report of a fire in the Bearna Park area of Killeavy at around 8.40am on Saturday. Advertisement Emergency services attended the scene and the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service extinguished the fire. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A young male was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries. Officers are conducting enquiries into the cause of the fire.
