Country witnessing remarkable growth under Modi's leadership: Kishan Reddy

The Hindu4 hours ago

HYDERABAD
BJP State president and Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy said that the country has witnessed remarkable growth in all sectors over the past 11 years under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while the previous Congress-led governments were known for 'inefficiency' and 'corruption'.
Addressing the Viksit Bharat Sankalp meeting, Mr. Kishan Reddy said, 'People voted the BJP to power as they wanted to unseat the corrupt Congress government in 2014,' he said.
Drawing parallels between the Modi government and the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, the BJP leader alleged that the Singh government was considered a puppet government.
Referring to India's recent retaliation to the Pakistan-sponsored Pahalgam terrorist attack, Mr. Reddy said that Operation Sindoor had taught a befitting lesson to Pakistan. 'During the previous government led by Congress, Pakistan used to have a field day carrying out terrorists at its will. But things have now entirely changed under the Modi government,' Kishan Reddy claimed.
Under the Modi government, the Union Minister said that basic amenities in rural India had been improved significantly, while rural roads and national highways were also built on a large scale. 'While there are 33 districts in Telangana, 32 districts have been connected with national highways,' he said, crediting Modi for the massive infrastructure development in Telangana.
Mr. Reddy also slammed both the ruling Congress and the main Opposition BRS for 'failing to fulfill people's aspirations'.
'People are vexed with the corrupt BRS and voted it out of power. Then, they believed in the tall promises made by the Congress, but the Revanth Reddy government has miserably failed to fulfill the poll promises,' he said.
Several BJP top leaders, including Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Mahabubnagar MP D.K. Aruna, National OBC Morcha president K. Laxman, TG party in-charge Sunil Bansal, former Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, and BJP LP leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy, were present.

Akhilesh Yadav eyes women vote bank with safety pledge, financial aid

Almost two years ahead of the UP assembly polls, Samajwadi Party chief and former CM Akhilesh Yadav has started eyeing the " women vote bank " in the politically crucial state. Targeting the BJP-headed UP government, Yadav said women have started distancing themselves from the ruling BJP as they are not safe under the current government. He claimed that injustice and oppression were at their peak. The state government's zero tolerance policy on law and order and atrocities against women has become a "zero". Yadav announced that if his party comes to power in Uttar Pradesh, a financial assistance of ₹3,000 would be provided to poor women. He criticised the state government for its alleged failure to ensure the safety and welfare of women and girls. "The situation has become unsafe for women under the BJP government . Every day, we hear cases of injustice to women... If the Samajwadi Party forms a government, ₹3,000 will be given to poor women in the state," Yadav said. He also highlighted his party's plan plans for enhancing women's safety if the SP returns to power. "We will strengthen women's security... If structural changes are needed in the police, our government will take big decisions in favour of women's welfare...," Yadav said. While focussing on the "women vote-bank", Yadav blamed the government for misusing the police force for its political gains. "Police will not do the right things, if they are used to win elections," Yadav told reporters. He added that if there is no proper policing, the law and order would not be good. Live Events On Sunday, Yadav held a meeting with the functionaries of his party's women wing Samajwadi Mahila Sabha . Sources said Yadav wants his party's women wing to expand its base at the ground level.

Delimitation to blame for BJP's Fatorda poll losses, says Damu

Margao: BJP state president Damodar Naik on Sunday attributed his party's consecutive electoral defeats in the Fatorda constituency to demographic changes brought about by the 2012 delimitation exercise. He said that while the redrawing of boundaries severed the party's traditional strongholds, the minority-dominated areas that largely comprised the Fatorda constituency remained beyond BJP's electoral reach. Naik was elected MLA of Fatorda for two terms before losing to incumbent Vijai Sardesai since the 2012 assembly polls. Naik said that the delimitation process fundamentally altered Fatorda's electoral landscape. The constituency lost significant portions of Gogol and Comba — areas where BJP traditionally enjoyed strong support — which were redistributed to neighbouring Curtorim and Margao constituencies respectively. Naik drew parallels between Fatorda and other Catholic-dominated constituencies in South Goa where BJP has struggled to make inroads. 'Just as BJP is unable to penetrate Benaulim, Nuvem or Velim, we couldn't do so in Fatorda as well since 2012 for the same reason,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3.5, 4.5 BHK Homes starting at ₹4.89 Cr.* Hero Homes Learn More Undo Sardesai has maintained his grip on the Fatorda seat across three consecutive elections — 2012, 2017, and 2022 —defeating Naik each time with margins ranging from over 1,300 to 1,500 votes. The political rivalry between Naik and Sardesai recently intensified at Friday's BJP karyakarta melava. At the gathering, Naik challenged Sardesai to name a single signature project implemented during his 13-year tenure, even stating his readiness to quit politics if Sardesai could prove he brought any major development project to the constituency. Naik specifically highlighted his own achievements during his two-term tenure as the Fatorda MLA, citing the South Goa district hospital, South Goa collectorate complex, Ravindra Bhavan, and South Goa Planning and Development Authority's market complex as the flagship projects completed under his leadership. His challenge was supported by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who publicly acknowledged that Fatorda witnessed infrastructure development during Naik's earlier stint as the constituency's MLA. A day later, Sardesai's supporters countered Naik by listing various agricultural support initiatives and infrastructure maintenance projects undertaken by their leader, including free seeds, fertilisers, tractors, and harvesters for farmers, as well as desilting of nullahs to address flooding concerns.

At least 20 killed in suicide bombing at Damascus church; first major attack since Assad's fall

Syria's interior ministry said a member of the Islamic State group was behind Sunday's attack on a church in Damascus, which civil defence reported had killed at least 20 people. read more Syrian citizens and security forces inspect the damage inside Mar Elias church where a suicide bomber detonated himself in Dweil'a in the outskirts of Damascus, Syria, Sunday June 22, 2025. (AP Photo) At least 20 people were killed and many more wounded on Sunday when a suicide bomber targeted the Mar Elias Church in Damascus's Dweila neighbourhood, according to health officials and security sources. The attack was the first suicide bombing in the Syrian capital since President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December by an Islamist-led rebel uprising. Syria's interior ministry confirmed the attacker was affiliated with the Islamic State group. 'A suicide attacker affiliated with the Daesh (IS) terrorist group entered the Saint Elias church… opened fire then blew himself up with an explosive belt,' the ministry said in a statement. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A security official, speaking anonymously with Reuters said two men were involved in the incident, including the suicide bomber himself. Islamic State has been behind several attempted attacks on churches in Syria since Assad's fall, but this was the first to succeed, another security source told Reuters. Syria's state news agency cited the health ministry as saying that 52 people were also injured in the blast. A livestream from the site by Syria's civil defence, the White Helmets, showed scenes of destruction from inside the church, including a bloodied floor and shattered pews and masonry. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the offensive against Assad before taking over in January for a transitional phase, has repeatedly said he will protect minorities. 'We unequivocally condemn the abhorrent terrorist suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, Syria,' the Greek foreign ministry said in a statement. 'We demand that the Syrian transitional authorities take immediate action to hold those involved accountable and implement measures to guarantee the safety of Christian communities and all religious groups, allowing them to live without fear.' Islamic State had previously targeted religious minorities, including a major attack on Shiite pilgrims in Sayeda Zainab in 2016 — one of the most notorious bombings during Assad's rule. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The latest assault underscores the group's continued ability to exploit security gaps despite the collapse of its territorial control and years of counterterrorism efforts.
