Scottish ferry where your petrol jerry cans need their own tickets

The reality, however, is that the hills and hikes I talk about so fondly are something I don't get to experience often at all. I spend 90% of my time in the village, only venturing out onto the reserve once a month to take readings of our night sky, and the odd time for a breather during a rare few hours of freedom.
So what do we do when this elusive 'free time' finds us in June? The list is as long as my arm. And the theme is cleaning. It's not your everyday hostel clean - the 'four hours to make this place sparkle while also being available at reception' routine is a well-oiled machine at this point in the season. Instead, it's the deep, honest clean that leaves an ache in our lower backs and a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day.

We unearth the socks lost under bunks or single walking poles left behind in reception. We change shower caps and bleach trays, and finally tackle the cluttered laundry room that's been driving us crazy for weeks. We descale the kettles, tighten up the door handles, and revel in having a washing machine laying empty for long enough to give it a thorough once over.
These jobs aren't glamorous, and they don't make it onto Instagram - I don't think I'd have the energy for it even if I tried. But these jobs are what keep this place ticking. They're not always noticeable, but they're there, and now, they are complete.
It's not just the physical maintenance that has our attention. It's also a chance to catch up on admin, which may not involve bleach, but can still be just as tiring. Chasing invoices, ordering more printer ink, organising fire alarm safety checks.
This week, that admin has involved one of my least favourite trials of island life - ordering fuel. We don't have a petrol station here, nor do we have a fuel truck that comes over for vehicles. Instead, it's a coordinated dance between you, the ferry and the local fuel station. For the avoidance of any doubt, the parties in this routine are wonderful. They always pick up the phone with a smile, and they've been doing this long enough that when I confusingly ask the most basic of questions, they don't bat an eyelid and immediately help with my struggles.

To order fuel, you have to first book your jerry cans on the ferry. They have to have their own ticket, and their own dangerous goods form - even if they're empty, I was surprised to find. But here lay my first problem. Searching in the back of our shed, I found the three cans I'd been looking for, however they were a distinct rusted orange instead of their khaki green. It took more than a week for my replacements to arrive, and by then, our petrol mower had mowed its last blade, and our vehicle was steadily nearing the end of its tank. But once the tickets were bought and the forms filled out, it was time to let the fuel station know what was coming their way.
It's a coordinated two-step of phone calls and dates, but this time, it wasn't to be. Turning up to the boat on Monday, they were turned away. Too many passengers on the ferry, they said. Ach, well.
And so the jerry cans came back home, still empty, to wait their turn. Just another job delayed (only until Friday, mind you), another small job folded into the long to-do list of June.
Because it's never truly quiet here. The guests might slow down, but the work doesn't. It just shifts. From full beds to empty jerry cans, from muddy boots to fresh mop heads. And it's what keeps this place - and me - ticking, one day at a time.

Russell Martin warned over Rangers mistake as Celtic flop tells him challenge could be 'over before it even starts'

The new Light Blues boss gets up and running in pre-season on Monday with a big Champions League tie on the horizon Russell Martin has been handed a 'over before it even starts' Rangers warning if he overplays at Ibrox. The new Light Blues gaffer is in position and gets on the grass with his players on Monday as they begin pre-season. ‌ The ex-Southampton boss will be going all out to implement his style and brand of football on his troops from the off with a huge Champions League clash with Panathinaikos on the horizon. ‌ Speaking on talkSPORT, former Celtic attacker Tony Cascarino spoke about the new man in the dugout at Ibrox. And he made his views very clear on his philosophy and principles. He said: 'I understand that you can stick to your principles and your ideas. But if you're playing for Rangers and you're getting beaten 3-0 against Celtic, you're overplaying and they're demanding that you go for blood - because they do, whether we like it or not - that's what the Old Firm derby's like and you have to be matching that. 'If you're playing tippy-tappy football and you're winning, you won't have a problem. I'm being a bit disrespectful saying tippy-tappy but basically I mean overplaying in dangerous areas. 'If they do that against Celtic and come off second best again, it will be over before it even starts, it really will.' It's all systems go at Ibrox with the players back at Auchenhowie tomorrow and the club holding an EGM. ‌ Fans are now desperate to see new faces with a host of names linked including Conor Coady and Max Aarons. Fact Check: Did Jasprit Bumrah Use Sandpaper During IND vs ENG 1st Test? Heres the Truth Behind the Viral Video

A video featuring Indian fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has gone viral on social media, triggering a wave of speculation and false accusations. The clip, which is being widely circulated by some fans and social media users, claiming that Bumrah was caught using sandpaper during the India vs England 1st Test at Headingley, Leeds. But is there any truth to this claim? Here's what really happened. The Viral Video and False Claims The clip in question shows Bumrah bending down to adjust his shoe during a break in play. As he does so, a small object is seen falling from his footwear. A section of fans, particularly from Australia, jumped on the opportunity to suggest that the object was sandpaper, hinting at ball tampering, a sensitive topic in cricket ever since the infamous 2018 "Sandpapergate" scandal involving Australia. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ganesh (@cricketmerapyar1) What Actually Happened: The Real Story The truth, however, is far from what is being suggested. The video in question isn't from the current IND vs ENG series, but from a Test match in Sydney during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, held earlier in 2024–25. And that mysterious object? It was not sandpaper. Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin stepped in to clear the air during that time. In a humorous yet direct post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, 'That's a finger protection pad ' The tweet instantly diffusing the situation and clarifying that the item seen in the video was a finger protection pad commonly used by bowlers, not sandpaper. Context Matters: Why the Confusion? Bumrah is known for slipping in shoe padding or wearing protective inserts to reduce the strain on his feet, especially given the high-impact nature of fast bowling. What fell from his shoe was likely such a pad or an inner cushioning used to provide comfort during his delivery stride. Such accessories are entirely legal and common among professional fast bowlers, making the sandpaper allegations baseless. The Real Focus: India vs England 1st Test at Headingley While old videos and false claims were making rounds, Jasprit Bumrah was busy doing what he does best , dismantling batting orders. In the ongoing first Test at Headingley, Bumrah picked up three crucial wickets, showing once again why he is considered one of the best fast bowlers in the world. India posted a formidable 471 runs in the first innings, powered by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. In response, England are 327/5 in 77 overs during the ongoing match at Leeds. No Sandpaper, Just Sensationalism The claim that Jasprit Bumrah ever used sandpaper is false and based on an out-of-context video from a different series. With Ashwin clarifying the object as a finger pad and no credible evidence of tampering, the controversy appears to be a classic case of internet-fueled misinformation. People should not believe everything they see on internet instead try to read about it properly. This Fact check was in respect for Bumrah who has been relentlessly bowling exceptional for India irrespective of the format or condition.

She wrote: "A little personal note to anyone on here who may be following me from when I was on a reality TV show. I just want to express how dangerous the nature of mainstream reality TV is... "The effects it can have on a human being, to me, it felt like I made a decision at a very young age, resulting in what feels like identity theft. "Finding my way home has and is taking longer than I expected. I never imagined the repercussions of this choice of mine, but here I am faced with a dilemma and to me a trauma. "We all made mistakes in life this feels like mine if you are following me for the wrong reasons and support reality TV please unfollow me. ‌ "We need to come together and cancel reality TV. I really really encourage you to erase watching/ supporting these programmes." Announcing her decision to quit the show eight years ago, Jess said: "I'm not filming for it [the new season]. Jess was one of MIC's main characters between 2015 and 2017, which saw her sandwiched in a love triangle with show lothario Alex Mytton and his then-girlfriend Nicola Hughes. The mum-to-be's former co-star, The Hills cast member Stephanie Pratt, later expanded on Jess' decision to quit the show, saying: "I think Made In Chelsea didn't make Jess happy. "She was definitely the type of person that had rage and regret, so it was harder when it [the show] would come out months later. She just wasn't happy on the show."
