‘AlUla giga project is driving Saudi Arabia's cultural renaissance'

Zawya01-05-2025

The AlUla Giga Project is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, aiming to transform the ancient city of AlUla into a world-class cultural and tourism destination.
Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) is a Saudi government agency established by royal decree to oversee the sustainable development and preservation of AlUla.
The development plan is spearheaded by Public Investment Fund (PIF)-owned AlUla Development Company and includes the construction of luxury accommodations, museums, cultural institutions, commercial and residential assets and destinations in collaboration with RCU and the private sector.
RCU's Arts and Creative Industries Director Hamad Alhomiedan told Zawya Projects that the ancient Saudi city is establishing itself as a global destination for creativity and cultural exchange offering experiences that are deeply connected to the landscape, community, and heritage.
Speaking in an interview ahead of his participation in the NEXT IN Summit in Madrid, organised by Acciona Living & Culture, he said AlUla and RCU's work in arts and culture focuses on building long-term, strategic initiatives that link artistic expression to place, support local creatives, and foster global collaboration
'The goal is to create a vibrant and dynamic district—where people can create, learn, connect, and grow contributing to Saudi Arabia's evolving cultural landscape," he noted.
Alhomiedan is leading the development of landmark cultural assets such as the Arts Districts, Wadi AlFann, and the AlUla Contemporary Arts Museum. He pointed out that the Arts District is a central hub for fostering community connections, cultural enrichment, and personal growth and also encompasses creative assets - such as the Art Foundation, Design Space, and Madrasat Addeera – serving as a gateway into AlUla's cultural infrastructure.
'The Arts Academy gives artists the freedom to challenge themselves and elevate their practice. Our educational offerings act as a space for experimentation, pushing the boundaries of how we think and learn,' he said.
On the other hand, the Contemporary Art Museum will be a flagship institution for AlUla's artistic legacy—showcasing 21st-century works from the Arab world and beyond, in dialogue with regional artists and AlUla's heritage setting while Wadi AlFann (Valley of the Arts) aims to establish a new global destination for monumental contemporary art, embedded in AlUla's desert landscape and geological formations.
Alhomiedan emphasised that building a vibrant cultural sector requires different sectors working together—government, non-profits, academia, private partners, and local communities, with each bringing unique value to the table, whether it's expertise, networks, or resources.
'In AlUla, this collaborative spirit enables us to design cultural programmes that are inclusive, long-term, and grounded in local relevance. It helps us create platforms that support artists, inspire the public, and connect with global audiences in meaningful ways.'
The RCU official said upcoming projects in AlUla will continue to reflect the region's distinctive balance of heritage and creativity, adding that the first permanent commissions in Wadi AlFann will be revealed soon, showcasing landmark works by leading international and regional artists.
"We're also progressing with the expansion of Madrasat Addeera, as well as development of the Contemporary Art Museum and Cultural Oasis—projects that celebrate craft, design, and contemporary culture in immersive ways. These initiatives aim to tell a rich and evolving story of AlUla, offering insight into both the heritage and the creative spirit of Saudi Arabia,' he concluded.

GCC Countries Boost Tourism Revenue as Visitor Spending Set to Hit $223.7 Billion by 2034

GCC countries are on track to significantly expand their tourism sector, with visitor spending projected to reach US$223.7 billion by 2034, according to new figures released by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat). In 2023 alone, international visitors spent US$135.5 billion across the region, marking a sharp 28.9% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This surge highlights the region's accelerating momentum in attracting global tourists and boosting its non-oil economy. Tourism's growing economic role is also reflected in its projected contribution to total exports, which is expected to climb to 13.4% by 2034. The report also points to continued progress across key tourism indicators, underscoring the GCC's strategic focus on the sector as part of its broader economic diversification efforts. Safety and security remain major strengths, with the GCC topping the 2024 Safety and Security Index for the Middle East and North Africa. All member states scored above the regional average of 5.86 out of 7. In addition, GCC nations ranked among the top six in the Arab region for passport strength, further supporting their push to attract international travelers and strengthen global mobility. These milestones affirm the GCC's growing position as a leading destination in the global tourism landscape. News Source: Emirates News Agency

Al Jabr Trading Company supports hands-on EV training at Wadi Al-Dawasir Technical Institute

Dammam, Saudi Arabia — As part of its ongoing commitment to technical education and social responsibility, Al Jabr Trading Company provided a new JMEV GSE electric vehicle from JMC to the Secondary Industrial Institute in Wadi Al-Dawasir. This contribution supports the institute's 'Electric Vehicle Training' initiative launched by its Department of Engines and Vehicles. The four-day training program included specialized workshops and intensive hands-on sessions covering EV components, operating mechanisms, routine maintenance, safety systems, and advanced technologies. Trainees conducted direct technical inspections on the vehicle, gaining practical skills that prepare them for the job market. This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goal to promote sustainable, eco-friendly transportation and empower national talent to keep pace with the latest automotive technologies, particularly in the electric vehicle sector. The JMEV GSE model stands out as one of JMC's top electric vehicles, combining modern design, efficient electric performance, and high reliability. It features a robust lithium battery with a 500Km range, fast-charging capabilities, smart interior systems, and advanced safety features — making it ideal for applied training environments. In recognition of Al Jabr's efforts, Eng. Mousa bin Abdulqader Al-Safran, representative of the institute, presented a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Jabr, Vice President of Al Jabr Trading Company. Commenting on the partnership, Mr. Al Jabr said: "We take pride in our collaboration with national educational institutions and believe in supporting programs that enhance students' skills and prepare them for the evolving automotive sector — especially as the world and Saudi Arabia transition towards electric vehicles. We will continue working to expand the availability of EVs in the Kingdom as part of our strategic plan to provide sustainable, future-ready transport solutions.'
