Minnesota state senator and wife recount targeted attack, reveal they were shot a combined 17 times
Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife have revealed that they were shot a combined 17 times by the masked gunman who then 'assassinated' another state lawmaker and her husband.
Hoffman was home with his wife, Yvette, and their daughter Hope after a Democratic fundraising dinner when they were 'awakened by the sounds of pounding on the front door and shouts of someone seeking entry, identifying himself as a police officer' around 2 a.m. Saturday, they told KARE 11.
They opened the door to find a man pointing a gun at them.

'All three of us were in the entryway. John initially lunged at the gunman as the weapon was pointed directly at him, getting struck nine times,' the Hoffmans said.
'As John fell, Yvette reached out to push the man and shut the door, succeeding before she was also hit eight times by gunfire,' the statement said.

Their daughter, Hope, slammed and locked the door and immediately called 911, they said.
Boelter, 57, fled the scene. He made the short drive to Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman's Brooklyn Park home, where he shot and killed her, her husband and the family dog, according to police.

'We are heartbroken to know that our friends Melissa and Mark Hortman were assassinated,' the Hoffmans said — adding that their daughter, Hope, and the Hortmans' daughter, Sophie, both went to school together.
The Hoffmans are still recovering from their wounds after undergoing surgery. John is in a critical but stable condition, while his wife is in a stable condition, the statement said.
7 Vance was arrested following the largest manhunt in Minnesota history, police said.

The shootings are believed to be politically motivated. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described the shootings as 'targeted political violence.'
The gunman had a long hit list with 70 names of targets, which were largely Democrats or figures with ties to Planned Parenthood or abortion rights, police said.

The Hoffmans acknowledged that they've surrendered their privacy in order John to serve as a public official, but said they are not 'grappling with the reality that we live in a world where public service carries such risks as being targeted because someone disagrees with you.'

'As a society, as a nation, as a community, we must work together to return to a level of civility that allows us all to live peacefully,' they said.
Boelter remains in federal custody on murder charges.

Josh Stein vetoed a bill to require state law enforcement to work more closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in addition to another that would allow permit-less concealed carry of firearms. The Democratic governor on Friday announced vetoes of the legislation, which had been approved by both legislative chambers. Stein said the state is already stretched to assist federal officers. "My oath of office requires that I uphold the Constitution of the United States," Stein said. "Therefore, I cannot sign this bill because it would require sheriffs to unconstitutionally detain people for up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released. He noted the federeal Fourth Circuit "is clear that local law enforcement officers cannot keep people in custody solely based on a suspected immigration violation." Stein said he also wants offenders to be held accountable. "Let me be clear, anyone who commits a serious crime in North Carolina must be prosecuted and held accountable regardless of their immigration status." He said he supports the bills' efforts to require sheriffs to contact federal immigration authorities about people in their custody charged with dangerous crimes, including sexual battery, armed robbery, arson, assault on public officials and court personnel. The vetoes were supported by Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers, Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Gary McFadden. Republicans blasted the decision by the governor, who was elected in November. "Gov. Stein proved where his allegiances are," state Senate Leader Phil Berger posted on X. "He'd rather prioritize his far-left donors and their dangerous open-border policies over the citizens of North Carolina who are desperately pleading for us to put an end to the illegal immigration crisis. I look forward to the Senate overriding his veto." Stein also vetoed a bill that would have allowed permitless concealed carry in North Carolina. "This bill makes North Carolinians less safe and undermines responsible gun ownership," Stein said. "The bill eliminates training requirements associated with concealed carry permits and reduces the age to carry a concealed weapon from 21 to 18 years old. "We can and should protect the right to bear arms without recklessly endangering law enforcement officers and our people." Berger criticized the veto of this bill. "Law-abiding North Carolinians shouldn't have to jump through hoops to effectively exercise their Second Amendment rights," the Senate leader said. "It's past time for us to join the majority of states that recognize Constitutional Carry. I look forward to the Senate overriding Gov. Stein's veto." To override a veto, three-fifths of the House and Senate must approve the bills. In the latest election, Democrats broke the Republican supermajority in the House by gaining one seat. The GOP has a one-vote supermajority in the Senate.

Bowling coach had been messaging 17-year-old victim before murder-suicide, her father said
A Michigan bowling coach who fatally shot a 17-year-old girl in her home had been sending the teen inappropriate messages before the killing, her father claimed. The tiny community of Bedford Township, Michigan, about an hour south of Detroit, has been reeling since news emerged that Ryne Leist shot and killed one of his young charges, 17-year-old Gwendolyn Smith, before authorities say he killed himself. As community discussion of the June 14 tragedy unfolded on Facebook, allegations of creepy behavior from Leist emerged before one resident urged others to not to jump to conclusions. 'I've seen enough of the emails he sent my daughter before he killed her to know it's not speculation,' Levi Smith cryptically posted in a Facebook discussion group for Bedford Township. 4 Gwendolyn Smith had just graduated high school two weeks before. US, POW/MIA flags turned upside down at three Brooklyn parks
United States and POW/MIA flags were hoisted and hung upside down at three separate sites in southern Brooklyn Friday, infuriating locals who blamed the disrespect on anti-American, far-left policies being pushed by New York pols. The city Parks Department confirmed it sent crews Friday to fix the improperly-flying flags at John J. Carty Park and the Fort Hamilton Triangle in Bay Ridge, and Bath Beach Park in Bensonhurst. Carty Park is – next door to the Fort Hamilton Army base. Hanging the American flag upside down is considered a distress signal under the U.S. flag code, but it's also widely used as a stunt to show disrespect for the U.S. and its government.
