What Actually Happened in the Liverpool Parade Crash: Here's What We Know
Eleven people were in hospital on Tuesday after a car ploughed into a crowd of football fans celebrating Liverpool's Premier League victory on Monday evening.

- What happened? -
Just before 6:00 pm (1700 GMT) on Monday, as the parade wound up, a Ford Galaxy car rammed into the crowd on Water Street in central Liverpool, which had been shut to traffic.
The car, blocked by angry bystanders, reversed then accelerated, knocking over people on both sides of the road, according to videos posted on social media.
Several people were knocked over or thrown onto the bonnet. Four were trapped under the car, including one child who was seriously injured.
Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said Tuesday that the roadblock had been lifted temporarily before the incident to allow an ambulance crew to attend someone who appeared to be having a heart attack.
"It is believed the driver of the Ford Galaxy car involved in this incident was able to follow an ambulance onto Water Street," Sims told a news conference.
- How many people were injured? -
Police said Tuesday that there were a total of 65 confirmed casualties, with many requiring hospital treatment.
Eleven people were in hospital and in a stable condition on Tuesday, Sims said. "I am pleased to say they are appear to be recovering well," she told a news conference.
- What about the driver? -
Merseyside Police announced that "a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested" soon after the incident, in an unprecedented move to quell social media speculation.
British police do not normally release the ethnic identities of suspects.
But the force had to deal last year with the aftermath of a mass stabbing in nearby Southport, in which three young girls were killed at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party.
Online rumours spread by far-right figures about the identity of the attacker were blamed for widespread riots targeting asylum seekers.
Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill told reporters on Tuesday that the man arrested was from the West Derby area of Liverpool.
He was detained on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs, and was in custody and being interviewed.
- Why did it happen? -
Sims had ruled out "terrorism" as a motive at a news conference Monday evening.
"We believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it," she said.
- What don't we know? -
In line with procedure, police have not released the full identity of the man arrested nor given an indication about exactly why the incident happened.
Harry Rashid, a witness who attended the parade, told the BBC the driver looked "emotional" and "agitated".
"His hands were moving about. He was trying to close the door of the car, I think, because they've tried to pull the door open and then he was trying to close it," he said.
Police said they were examining security camera footage across Liverpool to establish the movements of the car before the incident took place.
"Detectives are making significant progress," Jaundrill said.

Israeli military says killed Iran's Hamas coordinator
Israel's military said Saturday it had killed a top Iranian commander in charge of military coordination with Palestinian militant group Hamas in a strike on Qom, south of Tehran. Israeli "fighter jets struck and eliminated in the area of Qom the commander of the Palestine Corps of the Quds Force, and the key coordinator between the Iranian regime and the Hamas terrorist organisation, Saeed Izadi", the military said in a statement. The Quds Force is the foreign operations arm of Iran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Izadi, who is under US and British sanctions, was described by the Israeli military as "one of the main orchestrators of the October 7th massacre and one of the few people who knew about it in advance". Iran has repeatedly rejected accusations that it was involved in Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the ongoing war in Gaza. Izadi "was responsible for military coordination between the senior commanders of the IRGC and the Iranian regime with key figures in the Hamas terrorist organisation," the Israeli military said. The Israeli military added that he had directed Hamas forces operating from Lebanon, and helped Hamas rebuild its armed wing in Gaza. A military official told reporters during a briefing Saturday that Israel had killed two other Iranian commanders overnight, Behnam Shahriyari and Aminpour Judaki. Shahriyari was the head of Unit 190 in Iran's Quds Force, whose goal was to "annihilate Israel", the official said. "What Izadi was for Hamas, Shahriyari was for Hezbollah," the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that he "was responsible for transferring funds to these terror organisations who aimed to destroy Israel". Judaki was in charge of the drone unit in the IRGC, said the official, adding that he was "responsible for hundreds of UAV attacks against Israel". Iran did not confirm the deaths of its three commanders, nor their role in its military organisation. Fighting between the two foes began last week when Israel launched a massive wave of strikes on Iran, arguing that Tehran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. The Israeli military campaign has combined targeted assassinations of key Iranian military personnel, destruction of Iran's air defences and repeated strikes on nuclear sites. The death toll in Israel from retaliatory Iranian missile strikes since June 13 is 25 people, according to authorities. Iran said on Sunday that Israeli strikes had killed at least 224 people, including military commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians, but the toll has not been updated since.

Israel military raids West Bank camps
AFP |Ramallah, Palestinian Territories Israeli troops raided two Palestinian refugee camps in the occupied West Bank's north overnight, the military told AFP, as Israel presses offensives on multiple fronts. The military told AFP that at "around 4:00 am Israeli forces entered Balata camp", near the northern city of Nablus, for "a routine counter-terrorism operation". It added that the troops had been deployed to the nearby Askar camp prior to the operation in Balata camp. Imad Zaki, head of the popular services committee of Balata camp, also told AFP that the military began its raid at 4:00 am (0100 GMT) on Wednesday. "They closed all entrances to the camp, seized several homes after evicting their residents, and ordered the homeowners not to return for 72 hours. These homes were turned into military outposts and interrogation centres," Zaki said. "The soldiers are conducting house-to-house and neighbourhood-to-neighbourhood searches, destroying the contents of homes and physically assaulting the residents," Zaki told AFP. He added that life had been "largely paralysed" for the camp's residents but that no injuries were reported. In a separate statement, the military said that its forces had "neutralised" one Palestinian overnight in the West Bank village of Al-Walaja near Jerusalem. They said that as the troops were deployed in the area, a Palestinian armed with a knife "attempted to stab (Israeli) soldiers who were operating in the area and steal their weapons". "The soldiers responded with fire and neutralised the terrorist," the army said, using a term it normally uses when someone has been killed. The Israeli military said Tuesday that its forces had been active in various parts of the Jenin area, in the northern West Bank. It said in a statement that its forces had arrested five Palestinian militants suspected of planning attacks on Israel. Throughout the Gaza war, violence in the West Bank -- a separate Palestinian territory -- has soared, as have calls to annex it, most notably from Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Sex Crimes Spark Three Nights Of Anti-Immigration Riots In N. Ireland
In the wake of yet another alleged sex crime perpetrated by non-natives, a city in Northern Ireland has been rocked by three consecutive nights of anti-immigration riots. In this case, two 14-year-olds arrested on Sunday stand accused of attempted oral rape of a teenage girl on the previous night. The ensuing wave of arson, vandalism and anti-police violence — which has left more than 32 officers injured — has spread from Ballymena to other towns, prompting authorities to deploy reinforcements from the area and to request 80 officers be dispatched from across the Irish Sea. Following this latest sexual attack, what started as a peaceful Sunday vigil in protest of the sex crime and support of the victim rapidly turned violent, as angry residents broke away from the main event and set out for an immigrant-heavy part of the town of 31,000 residents, where they set homes ablaze, built barricades and hurled blocks and other objects at police. A pregnant woman had to be evacuated when her house was set ablaze. Authorities have condemned what they call 'hate-fueled acts and mob rule.' Police have struggled to maintain order, as they've been attacked with Molotov cocktails, fireworks and bricks. Cops in full riot gear have deployed water cannons and dogs against the crowds, and used groups of up-armored Land Rovers in a rolling phalanx formation. While Ballymena is the current epicenter of the mayhem — alongside more peaceful and orderly marches — the outward, active discontent has spread to other cities and towns, including Belfast, Lisburn, Coleraine and Newtownabbey. Per the latest census, 16% of Ballymena residents are now something other than native British or Irish, with the largest group being Romanians, followed by Poles, Bulgarians and Slovakians. Amid the relentless stream of sex crimes and mass murders perpetrated by immigrants across Western Europe, it's likely that native residents will increasingly take out their feelings of helplessness in violent fashion.
