Asha Negi opens up about challenging role in Criminal Justice 4, breaking her ‘girl-next-door' image with it
The gripping legal crime drama Criminal Justice has returned with its fourth season, once again featuring Pankaj Tripathi in his acclaimed role as lawyer Madhav Mishra. This time, the story revolves around a complex murder case within a troubled family, presenting three conflicting versions of the truth. Joining the cast are Zeeshan Ayyub, Surveen Chawla and Asha Negi, each playing pivotal roles in this intense and emotionally layered narrative. In an exclusive conversation with Hindustan Times, Asha Negi spoke about being a part of the hit franchise. She plays Roshni Saluja, Zeeshan's girlfriend, who is murdered. Asha opened up about her limited screen time in the series and why she chose to take on the role despite that.
Asha revealed that it was the story and the nature of her character that drew her in, 'because for the longest time people have seen me play the girl next door and those kind of roles. And I really want to experiment and do something different. When this show came to me, we all know it's a great show, the character, even though the screen time is less, it has so much to do. It has a lot of layers, and it was very challenging to play this.'
A post shared by Asha Negi (@ashanegi)
She described the most demanding aspects of bringing Roshni to life and said, 'Most of the days were quite challenging because when you're working opposite actors like Zeeshan Ayub. I had so many scenes with him and he's such a fantastic actor. So when you have scenes with somebody like him, you have to buckle up and bring your A-game, right? You can't just do anything and get away with it. So most of the days were quite challenging and most of the scenes that I did were challenging, which is amazing because it also helps you push as an actor and helps you learn and grow so much.'
Asha admitted she had initial doubts about accepting the role, 'I was sceptical that my character dies eventually, toh kya hi hoga iska (what will happen to her) but then I was told to read the screenplay and character brief and I was like maybe yeah, screen-time is less but there are times when the character is very impactful. So it's one of the most beautifully written characters. It was also so challenging, I felt like I didn't know if I'd be able to do this or not, it seems difficult to me. But whatever I had, I gave it my all.'
She also shared that nervousness is a part of every project she does and added, 'I am always nervous before starting a project. I get sleepless nights when I am about to start a new project. So, even this time, I was nervous. But it was so fun, you also see your growth and how much you learnt.'
Criminal Justice 4: A Family Matter premiered on JioHotstar on May 29. However, only three episodes have been released so far, leaving many fans disappointed. Directed by Rohan Sippy and produced by Applause Entertainment in association with BBC Studios India, new episodes of the show will drop every Thursday.

Review: Season 2 of ‘Kerala Crime Files' is more ambitious, busier and meatier
The first season of Kerala Crime Files was a slow-and-steady police procedural revolving around a sex worker's murder. Some of the actors from the 2023 Malayalam series – Aju Varghese and Lal among them – are back for a second round that is more ambitious, busier and meatier. Ahammed Khabeer also returns as director, relying this time on a deliciously intricate script by Bahul Ramesh, the writer-cinematographer of Kishkinda Kaanadam (2024). The lingering effects of loss – the main theme in Kishkindha Kanadam – is one of the ideas driving the six-episode show on JioHotstar. Kerala Crime Files: The Search for CPO Ambili Raju begins with the police sniffer dog Terry's strange antics during a robbery investigation. Terry is prematurely retired from the police force for his misbehaviour. Ten months later, Noble (Arjun Radhakrishnan) takes up a new posting at a police station in Trivandrum. Noble's very first case under Kurian (Lal) is the disappearance of the policeman Ambili (Indrans). Ambili is reputed for his honesty and problem-solving skills. Ambili is also something of a maverick, maintaining close ties with his first wife's new husband Ayyappan (Harisree Asokan). Ambili's vanishing foxes his colleagues, especially since Ayyappan appears to be missing too. The investigation spans the length and breadth of Kerala and spills over into neighbouring states. Suspicion about Ambili's true nature opens out to a larger examination of the complexities of human behaviour. The links between Terry and Ambili's fate emerge gradually. Despite some unnecessary padding, the second season is gripping, suspenseful and remarkably detailed in revealing how the police go about their work. From poring over CCTV footage to following a stray dog's trail, Nobel and his colleagues hunt high and low for Ambili and Ayyappan. The rigour in Bahul Ramesh's writing and Ahammed Khabeer's direction of his sprawling cast is in lockstep with the efforts of the characters to dot every I and cross every T. Unfussy, focused on the task at hand, and committed to cracking the mystery – the new season is a big improvement on its predecessor. The well-researched script finds ways to bring back Aju Varghese's Manoj into the story. Co-operation between police stations and teamwork across the hierarchy ensure that attention is paid to even minor characters. The cast is uniformly good, with Arjun Radhakrishnan especially strong as the low-key hero whose bold punt leads to a breakthrough in the case. Apart from the humans, dogs too play a role in the proceedings. The closing credits name the canines who instigate actions that are stranger than fact and memorably explored through fiction. Play

Forest officials inspect Mannat annexe after CRZ violation complaint
MUMBAI: A team of forest department officers, accompanied by officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) H-West ward, visited the sea-facing Mannat Annexe in Bandra West on Friday following a complaint alleging Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) violations. Mumbai, India. June 20, 2025. BMC and forest department officials visited Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat bungalow on Friday, June 20, 2025, to conduct an inspection. Renovations have begun at Shah Rukh Khan's iconic sea-facing home, Mannat. Mumbai, India. June 20, 2025. (Photo by Raju Shinde/HT Photo) (Hindustan Times) The inspection was prompted by RTI activist Santosh Daundkar, who raised concerns over proposed construction at the property, which stands behind Mannat, the iconic residence of actor Shah Rukh Khan. 'The existing structure has six floors. The proposal is to add two more,' said forest guard Mahesh Sawant. 'We have asked the owners to submit relevant documents. Since no construction has begun yet, the question of a violation does not arise at this stage.' The annexe — a modern six-storey structure with two basement levels — serves as the Khan family's main residence, adjacent to the original colonial-style bungalow built in 1914, a Grade III heritage building. The entire property spans over 2,091.38 square metres and overlooks the Arabian Sea. According to official documents accessed by Hindustan Times, Gauri Khan filed an application on November 9, 2023, with the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), seeking permission to construct the seventh and eighth floors atop the existing annexe. The estimated cost of the project is ₹ 25 crore. In his complaint, Daundkar alleged that the expansion plan violates CRZ norms, as the property is located in an ecologically sensitive area near the coast and falls within the 'hazard line' demarcated by the Survey of India. He also flagged the heritage status of the site. The forest department has initiated a preliminary inquiry and will submit a report based on the documentation provided by the owners.
