At least four passengers were killed and six injured after falling off a moving local train in Maharashtra's Thane district on Monday morning, police said.
The incident occurred between Diva and Kopar railway stations when the overcrowded train was going towards Kasara, an official said.
As there was a huge rush during the peak hour, many people were standing at the doors of the train, he said.
While the train was in motion, at least 10 passengers fell down, the official said.
A guard of another train, which was going towards Kasara, alerted the railway authorities about the incident, he said.
All the passengers who fell were rushed to a civic-run hospital in Kalwa. Four of them were declared dead on arrival, the official said.
The deceased were in the age group of 30 to 35 years, he said.
Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer of the Central Railway, earlier in the day told PTI that the guard of a Kasara-bound train reported about the injured passengers along the track side to the control room at around 9.30 am.
The injured passengers were rushed to the nearby hospitals, he said.
Nila had said it was not yet known from which train the passengers fell.
Shiv Sena Lok Sabha member from Thane, Naresh Mhaske demanded a probe into the death of passengers.
"The cause of the incident needs to be addressed. How did they fall...was there a crowd, were they pushed, was there a fight," he told a regional news channel.
Mhaske said, "One can understand if it was a crowded local train. But in this case, the tragedy happened in a moving express train. The administration also needs to be alert." Leader of Opposition in the state legislative council Ambadas Danve in a post on X said the incident of so many people suddenly getting out of the Pushpak Express and resulting in the accident is heartbreaking and serious.
This incident raises questions about railway safety in Mumbai, he said.

"Irreparable loss for BJP:" JP Nadda on former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani's demise

ANI 20 Jun 2025, 22:25 GMT+10 Ahemdabad (Gujarat) [India], June 20 (ANI): BJP President JP Nadda on Friday expressed grief over the demise of former Gujarat Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Rupani, who was among the 241 who died when the London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff, colliding with a hostel complex near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. Nadda visited Rupani's residence in Gandhinagar to pay tributes and offer condolences to the bereaved family. In a post on X, Nadda wrote, 'On the untimely demise of former Chief Minister of Gujarat and senior BJP leader late Vijaybhai Rupani ji, I reached his residence in Gandhinagar today and paid tributes and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. Late Rupani ji played an important role in expanding the organisation as a dedicated worker. His contribution in giving new impetus to the development journey of Gujarat as the Chief Minister is unforgettable. His demise is an irreparable loss for the BJP family. I pray to God to give place to the departed soul in his feet and provide strength to the grief-stricken family.' On Monday, the last rites of Rupani were performed with full state honours in Rajkot, and he was cremated by his son Rushabh Rupani. Top political leaders attended the funeral ceremony, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who paid their final respects to the departed leader. Vijay Rupani's body was taken in a funeral procession through Rajkot before reaching the cremation ground. The state police gave a guard of honour as a mark of tribute to the former chief minister. Rupani was accorded a 21-gun salute during his last rites, as a mark of respect to the departed leader. The last rites were performed at the Ramnathpara crematorium. (ANI)

US ‘friend' of countries only till its interests served, says Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday said the US was a "friend" of other countries only till its benefits were served, and Washington can do anything to secure its interests. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the US does "not care for any other country".(PTI) Abdullah's remark came in response to a question by reporters on US President Donald Trump hosting Pakistan Army chief Asif Munir for a White House lunch. "The US President is a master of his own will. Can we tell him whom he should invite for meals and whom not? It is a separate issue that we used to think the US President was our very special friend, and he would respect our friendship. "But obviously, America does what benefits it. They do not care for any other country," the CM told reporters after getting down at the Srinagar Railway station, having returned from Jammu. The chief minister had gone to Jammu on the recently launched Vande Bharat train, along with his father, Farooq Abdullah. On his train journey, he said, "Had it not been good, why would I have returned via train by train. The manner in which the people are trying to book trains for this train, and that the process of waiting list has started, we want the length (capacity) and the frequency of the train to be increased." He added, "It has become a successful service in just a few days; we would want more people to benefit from it." Asked about the Iran-Israel conflict, the National Conference leader said the war should stop and the issue resolved through dialogue. "This bombing should not have started. Before this, when the American intelligence in-charge was asked if Iran had the nuclear bomb, he had said he did not think Iran could make a bomb for a long time. But Israel attacked Iran within a few months. This attack should stop and the issues resolved through talks," he said. On the local students studying in Iran, he said they will return gradually. "We cannot bring them back overnight, as airports and ports are closed. We are bringing them via road first to those cities where there is no bombing, then they are being brought back through Armenia. "We are hopeful that today, 300-400 students are returning, a majority of whom are from J-K. We will bring them home safely," he added. Asked about power sharing with the lieutenant governor, Abdullah said the LG should approve the business rules that have been approved by the cabinet to end the confusion. "I have never said LG has all the powers. You check the J-K Reservation Act. The LG has himself said that his responsibility is limited to only the security and law and order. "That is why I am saying that the business rules approved by the cabinet should be signed and returned by the LG so that there is no confusion," he said. "The LG has one responsibility: He should protect the people of J-K and improve the security scenario here … Rest of the responsibilities are ours," the CM added.
