Three-time WNBA champion joins HBCU program

Miami Herald20-05-2025

Prairie View A&M has made a major splash in the HBCU coaching landscape by hiring WNBA legend and Texas Tech Hall of Famer Plenette Pierson. She has joined the women's basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach. The former WNBA champion brings over two decades of elite basketball experience to Prairie View A&M for the 2024-25 season.
Pierson joins the Lady Panthers after serving as associate head coach at Texas Tech, her alma mater, where she was instrumental in the team's resurgence. During her tenure, the Lady Raiders posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in over a decade and reached the quarterfinals of both the Big 12 Tournament and the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT).
Known for her ability to develop post players and lead recruiting efforts, Pierson helped guide Texas Tech to key wins over top-tier programs including Virginia Tech, Arkansas, and Iowa State. Her influence helped produce All-Big 12 standouts and one of the nation's top transfer classes.
A former No. 4 overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft, Pierson is a three-time WNBA champion and former Sixth Woman of the Year. Her move to Prairie View A&M marks a powerful new chapter for HBCU women's basketball.
Pierson was hired by new PVAMU head coach Tia Dillard, a former standout at Texas and WNBA veteran. Dillard comes over from the University of Houston, where she helped guide the Cougars to multiple postseason runs. Known for mentoring sharpshooter Laila Blair and excelling in recruitment, Dillard's leadership is already reshaping Prairie View's HBCU basketball identity. Her decision to hire Pierson blends pro-level pedigree with high-level collegiate coaching insight.

Why Chris Hacopian chose Texas A&M - ‘I Want to Be the Best Baseball Player Possible'

Next season will be a make-or-break year for Texas A&M head baseball coach Michael Earley. Fans had mixed reactions when it was announced he would be retained, but expectations were high for several changes heading into the 2026 season. The first major move was the addition of Conference USA Assistant Coach of the Year, Cliff Pennington, who brings valuable experience to the staff, particularly on defense and the base paths. Another area of focus was the roster, as several players had already committed to staying under Earley. However, he still needed to address the loss of production and pitching depth. After a slow start in the transfer portal, Coach Earley received great news late Thursday night when one of the top players available, Chris Hacopian, committed to Texas A&M. The former Maryland infielder slashed .375/.502/.656 with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs, adding instant offense to the lineup. In a recent interview, Hacopian was asked why he chose A&M. His response: 'I want to become the best baseball player possible … and I think A&M and those guys over there are going to accomplish that.' Insane Caitlin Clark 3-Point Shooting Statistic is Turning Heads

Insane Caitlin Clark 3-Point Shooting Statistic is Turning Heads originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Every time Caitlin Clark graces a basketball court, the record books are in danger. Clark, 23, continues to face her responsibilities as the unofficial face of the WNBA head on. Advertisement While Clark's sophomore season hasn't gone exactly as planned, missing five games due to a left quadriceps strain, she's still giving fans everywhere what they're looking for. Clark made her triumphant return from injury, against the New York Liberty on Saturday (the team she was injured against). And Clark put on an absolute show, draining seven, long-distance 3-pointers. Clark's average distance for made 3-pointers on Saturday was 28.7 feet. She made three 3-pointers from at least 30 feet. While those numbers are impressive, it's Clark's shooting percentage when launching 3-pointers from beyond 30 feet this season that's astonishing. Advertisement Per @PolymarketHoops on X, Clark, during the 2025 WNBA season, is shooting 45.5% from beyond 30 feet. Clark has gone 5-for-11 this season when shooting 3-pointers from at least 30 feet. This is higher than her 3-point % (36.7) and higher than her overall field goal percentage (43.9%). WNBA fans took to social media to react to this spectacular statistic. One commenter said, "Makes me think of that interview she did when she was in college where she said it's easier for her when she's further away from the hoop." Another user on X posted, "She is in a league of her own." Others took this as an opportunity to take a shot at Angel Reese. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin ClarkGrace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Clark has been known to fire shots from virtually anywhere, she knowingly enjoys shooting from the logo, but now the world can put a percentage to the magic. More importantly, Clark and her Indiana Fever, handed the Liberty their first loss on the season (102-88). The Fever have dealt with a handful of injuries so far this season and went 2-3 during Clark's absence. They hold a 5-5 record on the season. The next opportunity for Clark to show off her long-distance shooting prowess will come on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. EDT at home against the Connecticut Sun. Caitlin Clark Has Forgettable Night as Indiana Fever Fall to Valkyries

Caitlin Clark Has Forgettable Night as Indiana Fever Fall to Valkyries originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When Caitlin Clark's name graces the headlines, it's generally because she's just done something the world has never seen before, or she's just broken another record. In her second season in the WNBA, at just 23 years of age, Clark continues to climb leaderboards and record books with her stellar play. Advertisement Thursday night, however, was the rare occasion when Clark had a forgettable night. Thursday night's game between the Indiana Fever and Golden State Valkyries was Game No. 47 of Clark's WNBA career. Clark is already No. 2 all-time for 3-pointers made in a season (122 in 2024). She also led the league in 3-pointers made per game in 2024 (3.0). Clark continues to set a new standard for 3-point shooting in the WNBA, but even the greatest shooters of all-time have off nights. Thursday night's 88-77 loss to the Valkyries was just the second game in Clark's WNBA career when she failed to make a 3-pointer. Clark finished 0-for-7 from 3-point range against the Valkyries. She scored just 11 points on 3-for-14 shooting from the field. Advertisement The only other game in her WNBA career when she failed to make a 3-pointer came during the 2025 WNBA season as well. On May 22, Clark went 0-for-5 from 3-point range against the Atlanta Dream. The Fever, however, would win that game 81-76. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images Despite her struggles on Thursday night, Clark packed yet another arena on the road. The reported attendance inside Chase Center was 18,064, and Clark's pregame routine and interactions caused quite a stir for Fever and Valkyries fans alike. Clark will look to start a new streak of games with a made 3-pointer in the Fever's next game. They'll take on the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
