Dialogue, not war, only path to lasting stability in region: Abdelatty to US envoy Witkoff

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed to US President Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff that Egypt believes there are no military solutions to the conflict between Israel and Iran, emphasizing that peaceful settlement and political dialogue remain the only viable path to lasting peace and stability in the region. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said this was said during a phone call on Saturday, within the framework of ongoing coordination and consultation between Egypt and the United States on rapidly evolving and dangerous regional developments. The Egyptian top diplomat stressed to the US envoy growing regional concerns amid the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran, and the serious threat they pose to the security and stability of the Middle East. Minister Abdelatty stressed to Witkoff the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, reach a ceasefire between the two sides, and restart US-Iran nuclear negotiations. For his part, Witkoff briefed the Egyptian minister on Washington's perspective on the unfolding situation and the efforts underway to give diplomacy a chance to contain the crisis. This was the third phone conversation between Abdelatty and Witkoff on the Israel-Iran situation this week. Earlier on Saturday, in a speech during the 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul, FM Abdelatty said Egypt has condemned Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, warning that they violate international humanitarian law and relevant United Nations (UN) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolutions. He said the Israeli aggression on Iran - a direct violation of international law and the UN Charter - had preempted Washington-Tehran talks brokered by Oman, aimed at reviving diplomacy over Iran's nuclear programme. 'These negotiations aimed to prevent the region from descending into a new wave of escalation and conflict, which would negatively impact all countries in the region.' Abdelatty reiterated that 'there are no military solutions to this crisis,' urging a ceasefire, return to negotiations, and 'halt [to] the current military escalation.' He also called for a comprehensive approach to Iran's nuclear file. He renewed Egypt's call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, criticizing Israel's refusal to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) or to place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. Before speaking to Witkoff, FM Abdelatty discussed the ongoing Israeli aggression on Iran and efforts to de-escalate the conflict between Tel-Aviv and Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Turkey on Saturday. According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Minister Abdelatty reviewed with Araghchi intensive diplomatic efforts undertaken in recent days to de-escalate the conflict and achieve a ceasefire. Adelatty stressed to Araghchi the importance of pursuing diplomatic and political avenues to reach a sustainable agreement on Iran's nuclear program, to contain the escalating situation, and prevent further instability in the region. Egypt FM discusses efforts to de-escalate Israel-Iran conflict with Iranian counterpart in Istanbul - Foreign Affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty discussed the ongoing Israeli aggression on Iran and efforts to de-escalate the conflict between Tel-Aviv and Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Turkey on Saturday. The two top diplomats met in Istanbul during the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit. For his part, FM Aragchi shared the outcomes of his Friday talks in Geneva with the foreign ministers of the European Troika (the UK, France, and Germany) and the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, focusing on the Iranian nuclear issue. Both ministers agreed to maintain communication and continue consultations to resolve the crisis and safeguard regional security and stability. Meeting with Saudi counterpart Minister Abdelatty also met with his Saudi and Iraqi counterparts on the sidelines of the OIC summit. Minister Badr Abdelatty and Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, exchanged views on the consequences of the ongoing escalation between Israel and Iran. Abdelatty reiterated the urgent need for political and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate, achieve a ceasefire, and resume diplomatic negotiations aimed at reaching a sustainable agreement on the Iranian nuclear file. Aside from the regional development, Minister Abdelatty also praised the strong fraternal ties between Egypt and Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to launching the Saudi-Egyptian Supreme Coordination Council and holding the Saudi-Egyptian Investment Forum, with the participation of ministers and leading business figures from both countries. He emphasized that this forum is a key and constructive step to strengthen economic relations, in line with the directives of the political leadership in both nations to elevate bilateral ties to broader horizons. The Egyptian FM also outlined Egypt's vision for the upcoming Egyptian-Gulf Investment Forum, scheduled to be hosted in Cairo later this year under the framework of the ministerial consultative mechanism between Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The forum is expected to mark a qualitative leap in economic integration between Egypt and the GCC, particularly in trade, industry, renewable energy, logistics, communications and information technology, digital transformation, healthcare, agriculture, and education. The forum is anticipated to create valuable opportunities to enhance partnerships and cooperation programs between Egypt and its Gulf partners. Minister Abdelatty further highlighted Egypt's prioritization of localizing industry and technology, stressing the importance of achieving industrial integration between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, especially in renewable energy and food security. He also reviewed the incentives and facilities provided by the Egyptian government to industrial investors. Meeting with Iraqi counterpart Egypt's Minister of Foreign Badr Abdelatty met with Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, in Istanbul, on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meetings. During the meeting, FM Abdelatty stressed the importance of intensified Arab consultation and coordination regarding the escalating military tensions between Israel and Iran and their grave implications for regional security and stability. He underscored the need to halt the escalation, return to negotiations, and pursue political and diplomatic solutions to prevent the region from descending into widespread chaos. The Egyptian FM also outlined Egypt's ongoing efforts to restore a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need. He noted that regional developments and challenges require greater cooperation and integration among Arab nations. He also reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to implementing joint projects under the trilateral cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan. Minister Abdelatty praised the deep-rooted and brotherly ties between Egypt and Iraq, commending the successful convening of the third session of the Egyptian-Iraqi Higher Joint Committee, which took place in Baghdad in January 2025. The session concluded with the signing of 12 agreements to advance relations between the two nations. He also emphasized Egypt's readiness to contribute to Iraq's development projects, highlighting the extensive experience and capabilities of Egyptian companies in this field. Russia keen on expanding investment in Egypt energy sector with Egyptian partners: REW Director - Foreign Affairs

Russia is looking forward to discussing expanding energy cooperation with Egyptian partners during the Russian Energy Week this October, according to Vladimir Zatyinaiko, deputy director of the Roscongress Foundation and director of the Russian Energy Week (REW). Zatyinaiko told Ahram Online that Egyptian partners will join discussions at the forum on investment, logistics, and the development of energy infrastructure, including electricity, liquefied natural gas (LNG), renewable energy, and nuclear power. His remarks came on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), held from 18 to 21 June and organized by the Roscongress Foundation. This year's SPIEF was held under the theme: Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World. Russian Energy Week will take place from 15 to 17 October in Moscow. 'Russian Energy Week is among the leading energy forums in the world with a participation of 82 countries,' Zatyinaiko said. "During the Energy Week, we invite experts from all over the world. We have common projects with Egyptian partners. Closely working with Latin America, ASEAN, BRICS representatives, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. We expect this interview to bring even more attention to the event.' He added: 'Russian Energy Week is a leading energy forum in the world. It is a key platform for discussing current issues and challenges in the energy sector worldwide. Our main goal is to gather at the same platform the representatives of the government, business, and the sector's experts to form common practices and define the future vision of the energy sector. REW grows annually, the business programme and the exhibition programme are improving each year.' 'In the context of the current world climate, I believe the Russian Energy Week unites people, and we are prepared to invite experts from all over the world during the Energy Week,' he said. Zatyinaiko said that the forum had become more relevant in the context of sanctions and ongoing geopolitical tensions and attracted growing international interest. 'As our political climate is quite tense, the Russian Energy Week has become increasingly popular. The number of applications for participation is growing. I can say openly that we don't impose any sanctions and restrictions. We are ready to accept delegates and representatives of technologies and equipment in our country.' He highlighted past activities and said several agreements had been signed in recent years between Russian companies and partners in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. 'We have also signed an agreement with the African Energy Chamber. The agreements are concerned with joint projects in the field of generation, infrastructure maintenance, equipment supply and technology transfer. Throughout the years, all the events that are held by the Roscongress Foundation raise questions that are important for the whole world's energy sector.' He said input from other global energy forums would help shape this year's REW agenda. 'We have several similar world platforms, conclusions of which we will include in the Russian Energy Week agenda. Global dynamics are changing the relationship between countries. We are trying to use interesting formats in the business programme. We are introducing so-called energy talks. These are the limited topic meetings with the representatives of Africa, ASEAN, and BRICS, where specific scenarios of energy cooperation are going to be discussed.' He added that plans were underway to expand the forum's programming. 'Plans for interesting business sessions, intellectual battles, developing the exhibition for the second year in parallel with the main event.' Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
