GPC announces new oil discovery in Egypt's Western Desert - Society
The General Petroleum Company (GPC) has announced a new oil discovery—GPR-1X—in the Abu Sennan fields of Egypt's Western Desert, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said Sunday.
Initial tests show the well produces up to 1,400 barrels of crude oil and around 1 million cubic feet of gas per day from the Behaira layer.
The discovery adds an estimated two million barrels of recoverable reserves.
GPC Chairman Mohamed Abdel Meguid said the well is undergoing production testing and has shown promising hydrocarbon indicators.
The discovery is the second in Abu Sennan in three months and aligns with the ministry's push to raise domestic output and boost production from mature fields.
GPC credited artificial intelligence tools for aiding the find, highlighting the remaining potential in the Western Desert.
Energy strain prompts urgent measures
The announcement comes amid growing pressure on Egypt's energy sector, as regional tensions and falling gas supplies strain electricity production.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Saturday that recent Israeli strikes on Iran have disrupted natural gas flows.
This has prompted Egypt to fast-track the deployment of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification vessels by early July.
Together with an existing unit, they will provide 2.25 billion cubic feet of gas daily.
Madbouly said the government is working to prevent summer power cuts, doubling fuel oil reserves to secure generation capacity.
Egypt's domestic gas production has dropped to 4.1 billion cubic feet per day, while demand now exceeds 6 billion.
The electricity sector alone consumes nearly 60 percent of that supply.
At the same time, Israeli gas exports to Egypt have fallen by one billion cubic feet per day, leaving just 800 million cubic feet flowing during the summer.
According to Reuters, Egypt may need to spend up to $3 billion on LNG shipments to maintain current power generation levels.

Arab foreign ministers have condemned Israel's aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, calling it a 'blatant violation' of the sovereignty of a UN member state and a threat to regional peace and security. In a statement issued following an extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the Ministerial Level— held on Friday 20/6/2025 at Iraq's request and chaired by Jordan—the ministers called for an immediate end to the hostilities and urged intensified regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and reach a comprehensive ceasefire. The statement asserted that a comprehensive regional de-escalation requires addressing the root causes of conflict, beginning with an immediate halt to the Israeli offensive in Gaza, the unrestricted and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid via UN agencies, and an end to illegal Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank, which they said undermine the two-state solution and prospects for a just and lasting peace. The ministers warned that Israeli policies were pushing the region further toward conflict and instability, urging effective international action to stop such measures and revive efforts for a comprehensive peace that guarantees the security of all parties—based on relevant UN resolutions and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative. In this context, they welcomed the convening of a high-level international conference on a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-state solution. They urged all UN member states to actively participate in this conference, set to be co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France at the UN General Assembly in New York, once a new date for its convocation is announced. They also welcomed Egypt's offer to host a high-level international conference to support early recovery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, aligned with the Islamic-Arab plan, at the earliest opportunity following a ceasefire. The ministers reaffirmed the need to respect freedom of navigation in international waterways, in accordance with international law, to prevent impacts on the global economy and energy supply chains. They stressed the necessity of adherence to the principles of the UN Charter, particularly the prohibition on the use or threat of the use of force in international relations. They called for the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states, rejecting any attempt to undermine their stability. The statement also condemned any violations of the airspace of states in the region and underlined the need to avoid targeting nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards. Such actions, they said, violate international law and pose grave risks of nuclear contamination and environmental and humanitarian disaster. Finally, the ministers reiterated the call for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, in line with international resolutions and decisions by past Arab League summits, including the 34th summit held in Baghdad in May 2025. CAIRO, June 21 (MENA) - Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli asserted on Saturday that the Egyptian government is actively working to secure the country's natural gas needs by enhancing the infrastructure required to receive imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). This move aims at boosting the efficiency and flexibility of Egypt's gas supply system to meet the growing domestic demand, particularly during the high-consumption summer months, he added. This came during an inspection tour on Saturday at Ain Sokhna port where Madbouli emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader, integrated package of measures being implemented by various ministries to ensure the stability of the national electricity grid. He particularly highlighted the importance of energy security in light of recent regional developments, notably the Israeli military operation in Iran. During the visit, Madbouli inspected the LNG regasification vessel Energos Eskimo, reflecting the government's commitment to strengthening energy security and ensuring the sustainability of gas supplies. He was accompanied by Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi. Madbouli revealed that Egypt is set to operate three regasification vessels starting from July. He also announced that a fourth regasification vessel would be held in reserve as a contingency measure to ensure continued availability of petroleum products and enhance national energy security.
